Membranes are provided which minimize reflective cracking in the repair of roads. The membrane comprises a reinforcement along with a binder having a high modulus of elasticity and a binder having a low modulus of elasticity. The high modulus binder impregnates the reinforcement and is adhered to the distressed road whereas the low modulus of elasticity material is adhered to the impregnated reinforcement and is used in contact with the subsequently applied asphaltic overlay.

Thermal insulating articles are disclosed of the type which comprises a laminate of thermal insulation and a flexible jacket material with the jacket and thermal insulation being directly adhesively adhered to each other by means of a hot-melt adhesive. The hot-melt adhesive employed consists essentially of an asphalt, an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer and a wax. Also provided is a hot-melt adhesive which consists essentially of an asphalt, an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer and a compatible wax, which is especially useful in adhering paper used as package wrap.

A primer composition for use in the bonding of asphalts comprising the reaction product of an elastomer and a terpene resin. The primer composition of this invention can be used in the treatment of substrates to which asphalts are bonded to improve the bonding relationship between the substrate and the asphalt, such as in road-paving applications, roofing applications and the like.

Primer composition for a laminated repaired road

A pressure-sensitive adhesive is disclosed which is prepared by hot melt blending paving grade asphalt, a depolymerized virgin rubber, a terpene resin, and a vulcanizable, non-depolymerized styrene-butadiene copolymer. These adhesives are especially useful in forming membranes by coating one side of an asphaltic based coated reinforcement with these adhesives. They are useful for highway repair and maintenance purposes and for waterproofing and show good adhesion to cementitious, for example asphaltic concrete or Portland cement concrete, substrates.

Blended pressure-sensitive asphaltic based adhesives

Improved chemically modified asphalts are provided of the type which is the reaction product of asphalt, a vinyl aromatic monomer and a rubbery polymer. The improved compositions are capable of impregnating glass fiber bundles and have increased elastic recovery rates, increased viscosity stability, less tack and lower viscosity. Such improved compositions are obtained by employing a styrene-butadiene thermoplastic rubber copolymer as a coreactant with the asphalt and vinyl aromatic monomer.

A chemically modified asphalt composition is provided which is especially adapted for use in the repair and maintenance of highways. The composition is a reaction product of a high oil asphalt, a vinyl aromatic monomer and a rubbery, or elastomeric, polymer.
