A shock hazard protector for protecting small appliances from the presence of water. The shock hazard protector utilizes a fusible wire link mechanically connecting two opposing resilient electrical contacts. A triac is connected to a sensor circuit and, upon the occurrence of water in predetermined parts of the appliance, the triac fires and causes a current to be passed through the fusible link to melt the link, release the resilient electrical contacts and open both power line simultaneously.

Shock hazard protector for hair dryers

A roller clip having three prongs is disclosed. It comprises a u-shaped member as a first leg terminating in a first longitudinal member and a second leg terminating in a second longitudinal member. The first and second longitudinal members are parallel and the first and second legs are interconnected by an interconnecting portion. A third longitudinal member projects from the interconnecting portion and is substantially parallel to the first and second longitudinal members. The third longitudinal member terminates in an upturned end. A handle also projects from the interconnecting portion and is generally located in the plane of the u-shaped member. Preferably, the handle and the third longitudinal member are integral and form an obtuse angle therebetween. The first and second longitudinal members may be flat and a notch for latching is provided between the first leg and the first longitudinal member and between the second leg and the second longitudinal member.

A hair dryer is provided which dries hair by directing thereagainst radiant infrared heat energy. The dryer includes an infrared (IR) energy source, such as a silicone carbide igniter, an anodized parabolic reflector for modifying the wavelength of IR radiation reflected by selective IR reflection, and a transparent IR filter lens on the outlet of the dryer to absorb unwanted wavelengths and a fan for developing a low velocity air stream which both cools the IR heat source and breaks up vapor layers on the hair. The wavelength of the IR radiation which is emitted is preferably from above about 0.8 microns to about 10 microns, which includes the maximum IR absorption spectrum of wet hair, i.e., about 2 to 3 and about 6 to 8 microns.

There is disclosed a new and improved hair treatment device which comprises a fan for blowing air out of the device against a person's hair, a heater for heating the air before it is blown out of the device, and a means to control the airflow velocity which means is located at the forward end of the conduit for the heated air. Specifically, the airflow velocity control means is a pair of hinged trap doors disposed within the air conduit which are adjustable with infinite variability between the maximum opening capability of the air outlet in the hair treatment device and the minimum opening. The preferred means for adjusting the opening between the trap doors is a knob disposed on the outside of the air conduit portion of the device which is in operative relationship with a screw in operative relationship with the trap doors. The screw has two oppositely threaded portions, one portion haing a right-hand thread and the other portion having a left-hand thread and is inserted in both the trap doors each of which have an opening containing female threads adapted to engage a threaded portion of the adjustment screw. One trap door engages the left-hand thread and the other trap door engages the right-hand thread so that as the screw is turned by the knob, the trap doors rotate in opposite directions about their respective hinges. In operation, the user adjusts the opening by turning the knob while drying, shaping or styling the hair in order to obtain the desired airflow velocity and to obtain either a concentrated, dispersed or intermediate airflow.

A fluid delivery control device for regulating fluid delivery by a pump to the heated vaporization chamber of a steam curling iron through a fluid conduit provided with a spring biased valve in response to the temperature of a heating element in the chamber includes a bimetallic disc in the chamber having the property of changing its shape when heated to a temperature corresponding to the minimum temperature required of the heating element for vaporizing the fluid. A fluid delivery tube through which the fluid is delivered from conduit to the chamber has one end adjacent to the valve and the other end attached to the disc for movement therewith. When the chamber is below the minimum temperature, the disc pushes the one end of the tube against the valve to hold it closed and prevent delivery of fluid through the tube to the chamber. When the chamber is at or above the minimum temperature, the disc distorts and pulls the tube away from the valve, allowing the valve to be opened and fluid to be delivered through the tube to the chamber.

A swivelling electrical connector includes a plug having an axially aligned contact and pair of tandemly spaced circumferential contacts. The plug registers with a socket structure disposed within the housing of an appliance which has complementary spring loaded contacts. One of the tandem contacts on the plug, preferably the one nearest the end of the housing, is a ground contact.

A massage device includes a rotatable housing containing a plurality of projecting spheres for engaging the skin and kneading the tissues therebeneath. The housing has a cavity therein for storing massaging fluid or lotion which is dispensed over and by the spheres. The massage device may either be permanently or removably attached to a rotary drive unit or may be in combination with a fluid metering means contained in a rotary drive means.

A styling apparatus for treating hair with heat includes a tubular heated mandrel around which hair is wound to be heat treated and rows of bristles extending from the mandrel for tensioning the hair while the hair is wound. The bristles are preferably mounted on a removable attachment which is received in a slot extending along the mandrel. A row of teeth may also extend from the attachment so that the hair may be combed prior or subsequent to heat treatment.

Styling apparatus for hair

An electrical connection is made between an appliance and a power cord by means of a rotatable plug which is bonded to one end of the power cord and rotatably connected to a socket in the appliance. The plug effects electrical contact with the socket through a central contact member and an exposed concentric contact member which is coaxially disposed relative to the central contact member. The central contact member and the concentric contact member are engaged by spring contacts in the socket which allow the plug to rotate while always maintaining electrical contact. In order to isolate the electrical connection between the appliance and the plug from axial and transverse stresses, the plug is provided with a strain relief bushing which transfers stresses between the cord and appliance to the housing of the appliance. The bushing also allows the plug to rotate or swivel relative to the housing so that torsional stresses applied to the cord are kept to a minimum. To further reduce and distribute stresses on the cord, the plug has a tapered end portion with a series of parallel grooves therein. The tapered end portion extends at an angle to the axis of rotation of the plug.
