An internal grinding machine comprising a work head adapted to rotate about a selected axis and to be displaced in a direction perpendicular to that axis. The work head includes a workpiece holding fixture having a fixed lower jaw and an upper jaw displaceable from an open position to a closed position for clamping the outer periphery of a cylindrical workpiece having a longitudinally extending slot along the length thereof. The fixed jaw has a longitudinally extending key to be located within the keyway of the workpiece. A grinding spindle adapted to be rotated about and displaced along its axis includes a grinding wheel having a plurality of annular, outwardly projecting tapered grinding portions for effecting stock removal from a clamped workpiece and cutting the workpiece into a selected number of annular rings, as the workpiece holding fixture is advanced relative to the grinding wheel from a start position to a finish position. The longitudinally extending key has slots through which the grinding portions are fed as the workpiece holding fixture is displaced from the start position to the finish position. The fixed jaw and the movable jaw each have a clamping surface including a plurality of annular grooves for receiving the outwardly projecting grinding portions of the grinding wheel when the workpiece holding fixture has been advanced to the finish position.

Internal grinding machine

A centerless grinder comprising a machine frame including bearings for supporting a shaft and a portion having a bore defined therein, a regulating wheelhead driving including a main drive shaft including a first shaft portion adapted to be supported by the bearings, a second threaded shaft portion axially adjacent the first shaft portion, and a third shaft portion extending through the bore, the third portion axially adjacent the second threaded portion and tapered inwardly toward the second shaft portion, a clamping ring having a threaded inner diameter for threadedly engaging with the second threaded shaft portion, and a plurality of holes defined in the outer diameter thereof for engagement by a suitable tool for rotating the clamping ring, a drive coupling having a tapered bore defining a surface for mating engagement with the tapered third shaft portion, and a threaded outer diameter, and drive lugs on the end remote from the first shaft portion, and a locking ring having a threaded inner diameter for threadedly engaging the threaded outer diameter of the drive coupling, and a plurality of holes defined in the outer diameter thereof for engagement by a suitable tool for rotating the locking ring, the locking ring being threadedly rotatable from a first position forcefully engaging and locking the clamping ring to a second position forcefully engaging the portion of the machine frame having the bore defined therein to break the frictional bond between the drive coupling and the tapered shaft portion.

Regulating wheelhead drive

An in-process grinding gage providing a means for continuously indicating the diameter of a cylindrical workpiece being ground comprising a mounting bracket gaging head means including a body including fixed upper and center pads and an arm pivotally secured to the body and including a lower pad, arm spring means for urging the lower pad into engagement with the workpiece, leaf spring means secured to the mounting bracket and having a free end, the gaging head means secured to the leaf spring and positioned so that the upper and center pads engage the workpiece which is to be ground to size, the leaf spring and the arm spring comprising means for continuously maintaining all three pads in contact with the workpiece as it is ground to size.

In-process grinding gage

A cylindrical grinding machine truing and dressing device for refinishing the surface of a peripheral grinding wheel of a cylindrical grinder comprising support base attached to the work bed of a cylindrical grinding machine, housing means mounted to the base having means for rotatably supporting rotatable truing tool means, means for slidably housing dressing bar and abrasive block means, motor drive means to rotatively power the truing tool means, timing belt means to transmit rotative power to the truing tool means, stepping motor means to axially displace the dressing bar and abrasive block means, worm gear means for translating the stepping motor rotation into dressing bar axial displacement, the axial displacement precisely controlled to forcefully engage grinding wheel before, during and after truing operation.

Cylindrical grinding machine truing and dressing device

A cylindrical grinding machine comprising a work spindle, reversible motor means for rotatively driving the work spindle in a first rotational direction during a machining operation and in a second opposite rotational direction, means for stopping the work spindle, rotating in the second direction, at a predetermined angular position including key means secured to the work spindle at a predetermined angular position, bracket means mounted for pivotal displacement from a raised position to a lowered position, means for maintaining the bracket means at the raised position, stop means mounted on the bracket means for pivotal displacement from a retracted position to an advanced key blocking position, means for displacing the stop means from the retracted to the advanced position whereby rotation of the spindle in the second opposite direction will engage the key with the stop means rotatively displacing the bracket from the raised to the lowered position and means for maintaining the spindle means at the selected angular position including latch means mounted for pivotal displacement from a retracted position to an advanced position for locking the key between the latch means and the stop means, and means for pivotally displacing the latch means from the retracted position to the advanced position when the bracket has been pivotally displaced from its raised to its lowered position.
