A system includes a handheld unit having a light source, an image sensor, one or more first processors, an Ethernet cable, and a frame. The light source projects light onto an object, and the image sensor captures an image of light reflected from the object. One or more first processors are directly coupled to the frame. An accessory device has one or more second processors that receive data extracted from the captured image over the Ethernet cable and, in response, determine three-dimensional (3D) coordinates of points on the object. The accessory device also send electrical power over the Ethernet cable to the handheld unit.

An articulated arm coordinate measuring machine includes an arm having multiple segments and an end assembly. The end assembly has multiple accessory interfaces that allow multiple accessories to be coupled to the end assembly. A handheld three-dimensional (3D) measuring system operates in a target mode and a geometry mode. In the target mode, a target-mode projector projects a first line of light onto an object, and a first illuminator sends light to markers on or near the object. A first camera captures an image of the first line of light and the illuminated markers. In the geometry mode, a geometry-mode projector projects onto the object a first multiplicity of lines, which are captured by the first camera and a second camera. One or more processors determines 3D coordinates in the target mode and the geometry mode.

Optical encoders and methods of determining rotational movement are provided. The optical encoders include an encoder disk having a patterned signal track comprising a plurality of optically detectable elements disposed on a periphery of the encoder disk, wherein each optically detectable element is associated with a bit in a binary sequence, wherein each bit has a predefined bit depth, a boundary dividing the patterned signal track into at least two sub-regions, wherein each sub-region comprises a subset of the optically detectable elements, at least one sensor arranged to detect an optical signal associated with at least one optically detectable element, and a controller in communication with the at least one sensor, the controller configured to determine an angular position of the encoder disk, wherein the controller determines the angular position based on a detected binary sequence, a detected sub-region, and a look-up-table.
