A raster image processor for an all points addressable printer includes at least three digital computer controlled processing units arranged in a parallel processing pipe line. The first unit is a master processing unit that receives printing instructions and generates rendering commands. The record unit is connected to the first unit by a dedicated bus, and receives the rendering commands over the bus and generates bit maps corresponding to the rendering commands. The third unit is a memory unit connected to the second unit by a second dedicated bus, and receives the bit maps from the second unit and stores them in a page memory. All three units are connected by a communications and control bus for overall coordination of the units.

Apparatus and method of producing image edge enhancement in four-color printers. The true black color is aligned for printing between the cyan, magenta, and yellow colors. When a black edge is desired, process black and true black are both used to produce the pixels along the edge. Because the process and true black pixels are interleaved with each other along the edge, the effective resolution is doubled and the sharpness is enhanced along the edge.

A raster image processor for an all points addressable marking engine includes a page memory having a data input and a write enable input. Halftone tints are applied to bit maps of objects stored in the page memory by applying a tint bit pattern to the data input of the page memory while a bit pattern representing the object is being applied to the write enable input of the page memory. Prior to applying the object bit maps to the write enable input of the page memory, the object bit maps may be combined with a texture bit pattern or clipped by a window bit pattern.

Copy finisher for assembling uncollated or collated copies produced by an electrographic copies into booklets in an intermediate tray, for stapling the booklets, if desired, and for selectively stacking the booklets in an offset or straight manner in an output tray. If a malfunction, such as a paper jam, occurs in the copier, the finisher will assemble the copies in process in the finisher into a booklet and offset stack the booklet in the output tray. If the number of copies in a copy set produced by the copier exceeds the copy assmebling limit of the intermediate tray, the finishing apparatus will assemble the copies of the set into subbooklets of copies equal to or less than the copy limit of the intermediate tray and stack all of the subbooklets of a copy set at the same location in the output tray.

Electrophotographic copying apparatus is disclosed having an elongated electrosensitive web defining a plurality of selectable image areas and having a plurality of perforations formed along an edge therein and movable along an endless path relative to a plurality of actuable work stations disposed along the path. The work stations are operative when actuated to perform a work operation on a selected image area of the web, respectively. The apparatus includes means disposed at a fixed location along the path for sensing the perforations to produce signals, a logic and control unit having a programmable computer with a stored program and responsive to such perforation signals for actuating the work stations in accordance with the program to cause the work stations to perform work operations on the web in timed relation to movement of selected image areas along the path respectively.
