Turbine oils are produced from a distillate lube fraction by hydrocracking to remove aromatics, catalytically dewaxing, hydrofinishing then treating with an organic peroxide, such as ditertiary butyl peroxide (DTBP) to increase viscosity and reduce cloud point.

Lower olefins are upgraded to high viscosity index lubricants by converting olefinic feed over a medium pore zeolite catalyst consisting essentially of aluminosilicate HzSM-22 under oligomerization conditions.

Lubricant range hydrocarbons from light olefins

A hydrous aluminosilicate adsorbent composition in which the active adsorbent is a mixture of non-fibrous clay with non-fibrous zeolite. The composition is useful as a feed supplement in animal husbandry, and as a topical adsorbent for veterinary use. The mixture has a high capacity for adsorption of ammonium cations, and a synergistically high selectivity for their adsorption. Beneficial effects as feed supplement may arise from lowering the amount of ammonia passed to the liver from the alimentary canal.

Zeolite-clay composition and uses thereof

High viscosity index, low pour point lubricants are produced by the oligomerization of a wax-derived lubricant fraction. The fraction may be produced from slack wax or de-oiled wax by hydroisomerization over zeolite beta or hydrocracking/isomerization over an amorphous catalyst followed by selective dewaxing, preferably by catalytic dewaxing over a highly shape selective zeolite such as ZSM-23. The preferred peroxides are ditertiary alkyl peroxides such as ditertiary butyl peroxide (DTBP) and are typically used at temperatures of 100.degree.-300.degree. C.

Lubricant production process with product viscosity control

Turbine oils are produced from a distillate lube fraction by solvent extraction to remove aromatics, e.g., with furfural, then dewaxing and hydrofinishing to saturate residual aromatics. Treatment with an organic peroxide, such as ditertiary butyl peroxide (DTBP), increases viscosity to compensate for the viscosity loss during the hydrofinishing. Dewaxing may be solvent or catalytic dewaxing or both. Peroxide treatment also reduces cloud point.

Synthetic lubricating oils having a predetermined alkylaromatic structure are prepared from a mixture of mono- or dialkenyl benzene with an aliphatic olefin by free-radical reaction in the presence of ditertiary-butyl peroxide, for example. Equivalent napthalene derivatives may be substituted for the dialkenyl benzene. The oils that are formed exhibit a high Viscosity Index, and a low pour point. The viscosity of the synthetic lube stock produced may be controlled by changing the amount of peroxide used.

Synthetic lubricants

Lubricant basestocks of high viscosity index, typically with V.I. of at least 130 or higher, and low pour point, typically below 5.degree. F., are produced by hydroisomerizing petroleum waxes such as slack wax or de-oiled wax, over zeolite beta and then dewaxing to target pour point. A preferred process employs a solvent dewaxing after the hydroisomerization step to effect a partial dewaxing with the separated waxes being recycled to the hydroisomerization step; dewaxing is then completed catalytically, typically over ZSM-5 or ZSM-23.

A process for producing lubricant oils of low pour point and high viscosity index by first carrying out a partial dewaxing of a lubricant base stock in an initial catalytic dewaxing operation, followed by a selective dewaxing step. The initial catalytic dewaxing step is carried out using a large pore, high silica zeolite dewaxing catalyst such as high silica Y or zeolite beta which dewaxes by isomerizing the waxy components of the base stock to less waxy brance chain isoparaffins but the severity of the operation is controlled so as to effect only a partial removal of the waxy components. Further removal of the waxy components is effected during the subsequent dewaxing step which is selective for the removal of the more waxy n-paraffin components, leaving the branched chain isoparaffins which contribute to a high VI in the product. The selective dewaxing step may be either a solvent, e.g. MEK dewaxing operation or a catalytic dewaxing using a highly shape selective zeolite such as ZSM-22 or ZSM-23. The severity of the initial catalytic dewaxing operation may be controlled so as to effect a net increase in the content of isoparaffins and because of the selective nature of the solvent dewaxing step, this increased isoparaffins concentration may be retained, producing a product of high VI. The pour point of the feedstock is preferably reduced during the initial catalytic dewaxing step to a value which is no lower than 10.degree. F. and preferably no lower than 20.degree. F., above the target pour point for the products. Generally, this will entail a reduction of at least 10.degree. F. and preferably at least 20.degree. F. in the pour point of the feed.

Lubricant production process

A method is disclosed for modifying an aluminosilicate-containing inorganic solid having a predetermined ion exchange capacity and containing an extractable silica by contacting, in the absence of added organic nitrogen or organic phosphorous compound and added activating metal oxide, the porous solid with liquid water at a pH of at least 6, at a temperature of up to 370.degree. C. for about 1 to 100 hours, and recovering a crystalline solid having an ion exchange capacity greater than the starting inorganic solid.

Zeolite modifications

The present invention includes a process and catalyst composition for paraffinic isomerization of a hydrocarbon feedstock which has a paraffin content having no more than 20 carbon atoms per molecule. The feedstock is contacted with a crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite catalyst having pore openings defined by: (1) a ratio of sorption of n-hexane to o-xylene, on a volume percent basis, of greater than about 3, which sorption is determined at a P/P.sub.o of 0.1 and at a temperature of 50.degree. C. for n-hexane and 80.degree. C. for o-xylene and (2) by the ability of selectively cracking 3-methylpentane (3MP) in preference to the doubly branched 2,3-dimethylbutane (DMB) at 1000.degree. F. and 1 atmosphere pressure from a 1/1/1 weight ratio mixture of n-hexane/3-methyl-pentane/2,3-dimethylbutane, with the ratio of rate constants k.sub.3MP/ k.sub.DMB determined at a temperature of 1000.degree. F. being in excess of about 2, e.g., ZSM-22, ZSM-23, AXM-35 and mixtures thereof, in combination with a Group VIII metal, and having a zeolite SiO.sub.2 /Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 ratio of at least about 20:1 at a temperature and pressure suitable for isomerization.

Nitrogen resistant paraffin hydroisomerization catalysts

Relatively heavy or relatively light lube chargestocks are dewaxed in two parallel, separate reactors. The reactor used for dewaxing the relatively light chargestocks contains a crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite exemplified natural or synthetic ferrierite, ZSM-22, ZSM-23 and ZSM-35 zeolites and/or mixtures thereof. The reactor used for dewaxing the relatively heavy chargestocks contains a crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite exemplified by ZSM-5, ZSM-11 zeolites, ZSM-5/ZSM-11 intermediates and/or mixtures thereof.

Catalytic dewaxing of light and heavy oils in dual parallel reactors

An improved process for the production of a high viscosity index lubricant range oil in high yield by contacting light olefins under oligomerizing conditions with a zeolite type catalyst, such as ZSM-5, which has been extracted with a metal chelating agent to remove a portion of framework metal oxide.

Olefin conversion to lubricant range hydrocarbons

A surface-inactive shape selective metallosilicate catalyst, useful for the conversion of lower molecular weight olefins to liquid hydrocarbons such as gasoline, distillate, and high viscosity lube oils, is prepared by a process comprising forming a silica shell on a metallosilicate core by crystallizing silica in the presence of fluoride ion onto the surface of the core.
