A tapered bowl assembly having a tapered bowl main portion with a tapered bore and a radially outwardly extending gap in the tapered bore, a tapered bowl movable portion securable within the gap and removable from the gap, a set of slips sized and shaped for introduction intermediate the tapered bore of the tapered bowl main portion to grip and support a tubular string introduced through the tapered bore, the tapered bowl movable portion being releasable from the secured position within the gap to a released position to allow the tubular string to be released from support by the tapered bowl assembly.

An embodiment of an apparatus includes an actuatable downhole tool with a brush actuator that includes brush elements extending outwardly from a slide member that surrounds a mandrel having a proximal end connectable to a tubular string. The brush elements are sized to engage a casing into which the apparatus is disposed. A spring element is disposed intermediate the slide member and the mandrel to bias the mandrel to a proximal position. A transition mode of the brush elements is achievable by reversing the direction of movement of the apparatus within the casing from the trailing up mode towards the trailing down mode and provides a sufficient amount of resistance to overcome the spring element to move the slide member to a distal position and displace a displaceable member of the actuatable downhole tool to actuate the tool.

An umbilical manipulator arm for positioning control lines for being secured to a plurality of tubular strings being made up and run into a dual completion wellbore includes a carriage movable on a base that is securable to a rig floor adjacent to two tubular strings. An umbilical manipulator arm is coupled to the carriage and movable relative to the carriage between a pusher arm retracted position distal to a tubular string and a pusher arm engaged position proximal to a tubular string. The carriage is movable between a carriage first position proximal to a first tubular string and a carriage second position proximal to a second tubular string. The umbilical manipulator arm can be used to position control lines for being secured to the plurality of tubular strings as they are being made up and run into the wellbore.

A downhole jetting tool is provided for cleaning the interior of one or more hydraulic rams () and one or more annular blowout preventers (). A unitary jetting tool body () has a central throughbore () and a plurality of radially outward jets (). A movable armengages a flexible lineat a well site for positioning the flexible line between run-in position for passing the flexible line with a tubular through a well hole in the rig floor and a clamping position wherein the flexible line is adjacent the tubular above the rig floor for clamping the line to the tubular. The armextends upward from the rig floor, and includes a line guide, such as roller, for engaging the flexible line when in the run-in position. A powered drivemoves the arm between the run-in position and the clamping position. A spacermay be used for positioning two or more flexible lines at a desired spacing relative to one another prior to positioning the lines within a clamp secured to the tubular. A slip bowl assemblymay be laterally movable so that slips do not engage the flexible line as it is run in the well.

A method, system and device for determining the quality of assembly of tool parts involves measurement of the rates of rotation of the tool parts or the torque imposed on the tool parts, or a combination thereof, followed by measurement of axial strain, or torsional strain, or hoop strain, or a combination thereof. The measured data are processed to determine the presence of a shoulder, seizing, seals, extreme hoop pressure, mismatched connections, and the like during assembly of the tool parts, thus assuring quality of assembly. The collected data are plotted versus time and displayed for the operator. The clamping device employed can be a one-part device for measuring hoop strain only, or can be a two-part device for measuring two or more of the aforementioned strain values.

Disclosed herein is a power tongs, including a rotary head and a circular plate loosely mounted on the head, with a flexible member secured at one end to the plate. The flexible member is wrapped around the pipe to be torqued and the free end of the member is tensioned around the pipe by means of a lever that is pivotally supported on the plate, the lever having an outwardly extending arm that is engaged by a pin extending upward from the rotary head as the tongs are operated. The flexible member distributes radial loads over the surface of the pipe to prevent crushing of the pipe and damage to its surface.

A power tong is disclosed having a pipe gripping device including plural jaws activated by independent expansible chamber linear motors. An air-driven hydraulic pump, whose output pressure is limited by an adjustable relief valve, supplies fluid to the jaw motors. The jaw force can thus be closely controlled, independent of tongs torque.

A control system for power tongs comprises two tongs torque limiters, one of which limits tongs torque to a very low (hand-tight) level; the other limits torque at full make-up to, for example, 2000 ft.-lbs. The hand-tight torque limiter is manually or automatically disabled after the hand-tight level is reached. The system enables the operator to verify that the threads are properly engaged before applying full torque to the connection. The tongs have a very high reduction ratio, so that torque rises very slowly and can be more accurately controlled. The high torque limiter includes a normally closed shunt valve in series with an adjustable choke, the latter of which enables one to maintain a substantial, adjustable, residual torque on the pipe even after the shunt valve opens.

A control system for power tongs comprises two tongs torque limiters, one of which limits tongs torque to a very low (hand-tight) level; the other limits torque at full makeup to, for example, 2000 ft. lb. The hand-tight torque limiter is manually or automatically disabled after the hand-tight level is reached. The system enables the operator to verify that the threads are properly engaged before applying full torque to the connection. The power tongs control system described herein includes a hydraulic load transducer in the tongs snub line, the transducer output controlling a shunt valve between the hydraulic lines leading to and from the tongs drive motor. At a predetermined threshold tongs torque, a switch is actuated by contact with a Bourdon tube connected to the transducer output closure of the switch causing the solenoid actuator to open the shunt valve and thereby halt operation of the tongs. A timer is provided to maintain the tongs in the disabled configuration for a period of time following initial cut off. Also disclosed is an adjustable choke valve in series with the shunt valve so that even following the opening of the shunt valve, substantial torque is maintained upon the pipe by the tongs.
