A method is disclosed for electroforming metal screen. The method deposits photoresist over a mandrel, and then exposes the photoresist with light through a plurality of openings in a photo tool to form hardened resist pillars. Unexposed photoresist is removed without affecting the resist pillars. The method then electroforms the metal screen in areas free of the hardened resist pillars such that the metal screen forms apertures defined by each of the resist pillars, a space between at least two of the resist pillars defining a support bar that forms at a reduced thickness as compared to portions of the metal screen that are not between the resist pillars. Finally, the method detaches the metal screen from the mandrel.

A stencil comprising two or more layers is disclosed for applying surface mount materials onto printed circuit boards, flexible circuits, wafers or other substrates. The stencil can accommodate preexisting surface mount components and materials. The stencil utilizes material reservoirs, relief areas and delivery apertures and can be used for depositing surface mount materials such as adhesives, conductive glues, solder paste and solder balls.

A squeegee blade comprising a base metal core coated with titanium nitride. Preferably, the blade also comprises a nickel coating between the base metal and the titanium nitride. The core blade is provided with an edge with a desired radius of curvature by chemical milling, and then the whole blade is chemically polished or electropolished and optionally nickel plated to produce a very smooth finish. The blade is then coated with titanium nitride to produce a blade with an extremely hard, low-friction surface. A squeegee incorporating the blade can be used, for example, for screen printing solder paste, conductive epoxy, or the like onto printed circuit boards.

A flat form gas discharge lamp is disclosed which includes glass front and back plates mounted together and in which the front plate is formed with a plurality of channels which are sealed to confine an ionizable medium. The channels are oriented in parallel relationship and are separated by gaps. Optical means is placed in the gaps for intercepting secondary light which is transmitted laterally from side walls of the channels and redirected toward the front of the lamp. Secondary light in combination with the primary transmitted through front walls of the channels provides illumination across an area with optimum brightness uniformity and efficiency.

A method for suppressing the objectionable visual flash associated with replacing patterns in a 'plasma-charge-transfer' shift mechanism type AC plasma shift display panel. During the erase mode, the load mode, or both, the phase voltage repetition rate is reduced until the time average luminous flux is substantially below the level of human perception in a room ambient light background. Upon entry into the hold mode, the phase voltage repetition rate reverts to a high frequency. The rapid rate generates patterns in the display panel which have a time average luminous flux adequate for viewing in the ambient light background. The visual flash is thereby suppressed without degrading the normal display characteristics of the panel.

A pair of electrodes perform both input and keep-alive functions in a plasma charge transfer device. The input-keep alive electrodes are formed on opposite walls of the device adjacent an array of transfer electrodes and are capacitively coupled to the ionization gas. (1) Repetitive and (2) selective voltage pulses are multiplexed to the input-keep alive electrodes and snychronized with transfer electrode pulsing, to provide (1) a keep-alive function and (2) the selective input of data to the charge transfer device. The erase electrodes may also be capacitively coupled to the gas. A pulsing technique is described for restoring charge neutrality to the input-keep alive electrodes and erase electrodes after each input or erase function.

A plasma discharge display device including at least one channel defined between opposing walls and containing an ionizable medium. Electrodes are employed for the application of potential differences whereby the medium will emit light proximate the electrodes. The electrodes include first and second AC electrodes on opposite wall surfaces, and third and fourth electrodes for developing a DC discharge in the vicinity of the first and second AC electrodes. The channel is divided into individual cells by means of insulating walls, and the DC discharge serves to prime individual cells, this discharge being developed at succeeding cells. The potential differences achieved by the AC electrodes across a given cell are selectively imparted whereby a primed cell can be caused to emit light. Thereafter, continued operation of the AC electrodes will maintain the light emission in the selected cells to provide a continuous display.

Load and hold means for plasma display devices

A plasma charge display device having a channel containing an ionizable medium with the channel defining an endless length as in the case of a circular channel. At least one input electrode is located in a first position, and transfer electrodes extend away from the input electrode on opposite sides thereof completely along the length of the channel. Gas ionization results in the formation and shifting of light emitting areas in either direction relative to the position of the input electrode. The transfer electrode positions are related to the input electrode position in a manner such that the light emitting areas can be shifted through the position of the input electrode from one side to the other thereof.

Circular plasma charge display device

A plasma glow tube for displaying a bar of selectable length comprises an insulating enclosure filled with an ionizable gas. The enclosure may have flat opposing sides, the inside walls of which have conductive electrodes (preferably transparent) deposited thereover in a staggered pattern such that each electrode, except the end ones, is positioned between and equidistant from two opposing electrodes. The electrodes, except for the first and last electrodes which are DC coupled to the gas, are all covered with an insulating layer so that they are insulated from the gas. A potential difference, preferably in the form of a pulse, is applied between first and second end electrodes to ionize the gas therebetween and leave an inside wall charge adjacent said second electrode. A pulse is applied between the charged electrode and the next succeeding, opposite (third) electrode to ionize the gas therebetween and leave a charge on the third electrode, and so on. After the charge has been partially shifted to its desired location, i.e., over a predetermined number of electrodes, the first and second electrodes are again pulsed, creating a second charge which is in turn shifted, in synchronism with the first charge. Thereafter equally spaced third and succeeding charges are created and shifted in succession. When the first charge reaches the desired electrode according to the desired length of the bar to be displayed, it and the succeeding charges are shifted backward and forward repetitively in tandem over the next preceeding, predetermined number of electrodes at a rapid enough rate so that all groups of predetermined electrodes appear to glow continuously, whereby the entire gas from the first to the desired electrode appears to glow continuously. Isolated segment or segments of the gas can also be made to appear ionized continuously by other modes of pulsing and charge manipulation.
