A new antibiotic, designated kristenin, is produced by the microorganism Bacillus subtilis. The antibiotic possesses activity against gram positive bacteria.

Antibiotic kristenin

A method is provided for recovering a polyether antibiotic, such as lonomycin, monensin or ionomycin from a fermentation broth, wherein the polyether is first extracted with a water-immiscible solvent, such as ethyl acetate, and the resulting extracts concentrated, dissolved in aqueous methanol and then extracted into hexane, benzene or mixtures thereof. The polyether is thereby recovered in crystalline form directly from the latter extract.

Method for isolating polyether antibiotics

Penicillin esters and their acid addition salts of the formula ##STR1## wherein X is hydrogen, methyl, methoxy, chloro, or bromo and n is an integer from 1 to 3 provided that n is 2 or 3 only when X is hydrogen or methoxy; are disclosed. Upon oral administration, these esters provide improved absorption and result in high concentrations of the antibacterially active parent penicillin in the blood, tissues and urine.

Phthalidyl esters of the acetone adduct of epicillin

A mixture of antibiotic substances designated polymyxin F is obtained by the cultivation under controlled conditions of a strain of Bacillus circulans, and is active against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. This strain of Bacillus circulans has been deposited in the American Type Culture Collection as A.T.C.C. No. 31228.

The antibiotic thiostrepton is produced by culturing aerobically Streptomyces laurentii A.T.C.C. No. 31255 in a culture medium containing carbon and nitrogen sources until thiostrepton is accumulated and then recovering the antibiotic from said medium.

Use of pleuromutilin derivatives for the treatment of swine dysentery

The antibiotics LL-AC541 and racemomycin A both members of the streptothricin family are useful as taeniacidal agents.
