An apparatus and method is provided for dispensing and labeling a selected length of cord from a spool of bulk material. One embodiment of the invention consists of at least one spool of cord from which a length of cord is drawn and an apparatus for measuring, labeling, tracking and cutting the selected length of cord. After the length of cord has been measured, a label is applied to the cord at the selected length from a lead end of the spool. The label is imprinted with at least one pair of functionally related identification elements, such as bar code indicia, and is adapted to be wrapped around the cord, to identify the cord and facilitate severing the cord from the spool. The information contained on the functionally related elements is entered into a computer, either manually or by scanning, for pricing and inventory control. The length of cord is then separated from the spool by severing it through the label intermediate the pair of bar code indicia so that a first portion of the label remains applied to the severed length of cord, and a second portion of the label remains applied to the lead end of the spool. The invention also embodies a method for labeling the length of cord that is cut from the spool. The method includes dispensing the length of cord, applying the label to the cord, and severing the cord between the pair of functionally related identification elements imprinted on the label.

An improved process to make composites contains the steps of: (1) partially curing a tackifier resin in contact with a substrate to form a shapeable preform; (2) adding a matrix resin and co-curing the tackifier and matrix resin to form a composite. The resulting composites are useful in structural applications.

An air conditioner having a fan motor brown-out control algorithm for increasing the air conditioner fan speed upon sensing a brown-out under-voltage condition is provided. The air conditioner has a power supply connected to an AC line voltage, a fan motor, a multispeed fan driven by the fan motor and means for sensing a brown-out condition of the AC line voltage. The sensing means is connected to the power supply and provides a signal indicative of a brown-out condition. The air conditioner also has means for increasing the speed of the fan in response to the sensed brown-out condition signal provided by the sensing means. In an embodiment, the air conditioner further has a microprocessor and related circuitry for adjusting the speed of the fan. In another embodiment, logic circuitry is provided instead of a microprocessor. A brown-out control algorithm for an appliance having a multispeed fan and components for operating the fan is also provided. The brown-out control algorithm has the steps of providing a voltage input, sensing a brown-out condition of the voltage input by determining if a brown-out state exists for a predetermined amount of time, and configuring the electrical circuitry and components to increase the speed of the fan in response to the sensed brown-out condition.

An improved process to make composites contains the steps of: (1) contacting a substrate with a thermoplastic partially-cured curable resin at above the glass-transition temperature to form a preform; (2) adding a matrix resin that can dissolve the tackifier and co-curing the tackifier and matrix resin to form a composite. The resulting composites are useful in structural applications.

A bracket for mounting a motor which drives a fan in a dehumidifier or the like includes two or more arms secured directly to the motor's housing. The bracket includes a rib which spans nearly the full length of an extender of the arm and gussets at the various junctions of the arm. The use of the rib and gussets in the arm substantially isolates motor vibration and reduces imbalance of the impeller and/or the driven component.

A nonskid coating for a carpet or mat is provided by placing a patterned polyurethane on the carpet, the polyurethane being permanently tacky. The method includes the steps of forming a precoat coating of one reactive formulation and forming a secondary coating of a second reactive formulation. The one reactive formulation is a polyurethane for holding face yarns in the carpet backing, and the second reactive formulation includes a diamine to render the formulation thixotropic and a tackifier for rendering the cured polyurethane tacky.

A unit bearing electric motor is disclosed which includes a rotor assembly having a one-piece rotor housing. The rotor assembly includes a retainer which is positioned within the rotor housing and is adapted to cooperate with a portion of the cantilevered rotor shaft of the motor having a reduced cross-section. Significantly, the arrangement of the rotor assembly permits its prefabrication so that the finished rotor assembly may be readily mounted on the rotor shaft by merely advancing the rotor assembly along the shaft so that the shaft is telescopically received therein and so that the retainer of the rotor assembly is moved into cooperation with the reduced section of the rotor shaft for securely maintaining the rotor assembly in its proper position on a shaft.

The preparation of substrates impregnated with epoxy resins and curing agents therefor is improved by employing as the epoxy resin one which has been prepared by reacting a low equivalent weight epoxy resin having an aliphatic halide content of at least about 500 ppm such as a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A with a dihydric phenolic compound such as tetrabromo bisphenol A in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide such as potassium hydroxide.

The preparation of substrates impregnated with epoxy resins and curing agents therefor is improved by employing as the epoxy resin one which has been prepared by reacting a low equivalent weight epoxy resin such as a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A with a dihydric phenolic compound such as tetrabromo bisphenol A in the presence of a quaternary ammonium hydroxide such as tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide.
