A tire monitor includes a sensor generating tire data. The tire monitor is configured to wake in response to a low frequency interrupt signal received from a remote source. Upon waking, the tire monitor scans Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) channels to establish a BLE connection with the remote source. The tire monitor communicates with the remote source over the BLE connection.

Methods, apparatuses, systems, and computer program products for wheel theft detection and notification using a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) are disclosed. In a particular embodiment, wheel theft detection and notification using a TPMS includes monitoring, by an electronic control unit (ECU) of a vehicle, one or more parameters associated with a tire monitoring sensor (TMS) coupled to a wheel assembly of the vehicle. In this embodiment, the ECU determines, based on the monitored one or more parameters, that the wheel assembly is in a compromised state associated with the wheel assembly being dislocated from the vehicle or in danger of being dislocated from the vehicle. In response to determining that the wheel assembly is in the compromised state, the ECU triggers an alarm of a vehicle security system.

Wheel theft detection and notification using a tire pressure monitoring system

Methods, apparatuses, computer program products, systems for enhanced tracking of tire tread wear are disclosed. In a particular embodiment, a tire monitoring sensor (TMS) detects a tread wear reporting event, generates tread wear data including at least a rotational time period, and transmits the tread wear data to a vehicle control system (VCS). The rotational time period may be a measure of time the tire takes to complete a particular number of revolutions. The VCS receives, from the TMS, the tread wear data including at least the rotational time period, determines a current circumference of the tire based on at least the rotational time period, and determines a tread wear value based on at least the current circumference.

Embodiments may include determining a tire pressure associated with a tire and determining a tire angular velocity associated with the tire. A vehicle control unit obtains data from vehicle sensors and other sources and transmits configuration parameters to the TMS. The TMS signal processing components are configured according to the configuration parameter to minimize the number of tire rotations needed to generate an accelerometric profile and extract a tire feature. The extracted feature is transmitted back to the vehicle control unit with the aim of minimizing the computational resources and battery consumption of the TMS.

A tire pressure monitoring system comprising a tire pressure monitoring device for mounting on an internal surface of a tire and including a pressure sensor for monitoring the fluid pressure in the tire. The system has an RFID tag located on the tire separately from the tire pressure monitoring device. In response to detecting a tire pressure event from monitoring the fluid pressure of said fluid, the tire pressure monitoring device causes the RFID to transmit data, which is received by the tire pressure monitoring device.

A method of determining an orientation of a tire mounted device with respect to a wheel rim using an acceleration sensor. With the wheel in a designated orientation and not rotating, a polarity of acceleration along a vertical axis is determined. Then it is determined which of a first absolute orientation or a second absolute orientation the tire mounted device is in depending on the determined polarity. The determined absolute orientation is correlated with the designated orientation to determine which of a first or second orientation with respect to the wheel rim the tire mounted device is in.

A method of locating a wheel-mounted electronic device, such as a tire pressure monitoring device. A wireless signal is transmitted from an interrogation device from each of a plurality of interrogation locations. The signals are received by the wheel-mounted device and received signal strength is measured for each interrogation location. The wheel-mounted device then transmits, in respect of each interrogation location, a wireless signal indicating the measured signal strength. These signals are received by the interrogation device which determines from them a location of the wheel-mounted device with respect to a wheel.

The tire mounted sensor includes a sensor housing containing a pressure and/or other type of sensor and electronic components which is inserted into a sensor mount attached to the tire. A system for tracking tread wear of a tire of a vehicle includes a processor configured to obtain a new tire rotational count value representing expected rotations of the tire over a set distance if the tire were new. A position tracking device is coupled to the vehicle and configured to track a distance traveled by the vehicle and report the distance to the processor. A wheel speed sensor is coupled to the vehicle and configured to track rotations of the tire. The processor determines a current tire rotational count value representing the number of rotations of the tire over the set distance. The processor then determines a tire tread wear value based on the new tire rotational count value and the current tire rotational count value. A display device is configured to display indicia based on the tire tread wear value.

A tire monitoring apparatus comprising a monitor installed on a tire and a pulse width measuring apparatus for measuring the width of pulses produced by the monitor. The pulse width measuring apparatus comprises a frequency analyzer for producing a frequency representation of the pulse, a signal processor for determining a minimum value of the frequency representation, and a pulse width estimator that inverts the minimum value to produce a measurement for the pulse width. The tire monitoring apparatus uses the pulse width measurement as an indication of characteristics of the tire.

An apparatus for determining the position and/or orientation of a tire mounted unit in a wheel monitoring system comprises a lateral force sensor that is responsive to forces exerted on the respective tire along a lateral axis that is parallel with an axle of the vehicle on which the tire is mounted. A wheel position determination system and method to count wheel revolutions in a wheel unit of a tire monitoring system. An indication of the count is transmitted, optionally along with an indication of a left/right side position of the wheel on the vehicle, and an identification unique to the transmitting wheel unit, to a central controller of the tire monitoring system. In the central controller of the tire monitoring system, the count is compared with wheel speed information for the vehicle, such as from an ABS system, to determine if one wheel on each side of the vehicle is rotating at a different speed. Based at least in part upon a determination that each wheel speed is unique, a determination of wheel location may be made.
