Modifiers for use in vinyl flooring applications reduce or eliminate the need for traditional, general-purpose plasticizers in applications that require increased hardness or rigidity. High solvating, fast fusing modifiers, such as dibenzoates, added to LVT formulations provide unexpectedly increased flexural strength, hardness, indentation resistance and deflection not heretofore known or recognized in luxury vinyl tile formulations.

Unique 3-PPB monobenzoate analogs useful as plasticizers in polymeric dispersions, such as plastisols, melt compounds, and adhesives among other applications. The analogs are structurally similar to and/or derived from 3-phenylpropyl benzoate and heretofore were not known for use in industrial applications, particularly not as a plasticizer in polymeric applications including without limitation plastisols and adhesives. Depending on the application, the advantages rendered by the use of the inventive monobenzoate analogs include, among other things, excellent solvating properties and rheology, low viscosity and significantly improved viscosity over time, comparable or improved Tg suppression, set and open times, as well as health, safety and environmental advantages, over traditional plasticizers.

Monobenzoate analogs useful as plasticizers in plastisol compositions

Polyester plasticizer compositions for adhesives, caulk, sealants, vinyl and other polymeric compositions comprising low molecular weight oligomeric dibenzoates prepared by end-capping a polyester plasticizer, having alternating units of glycols or diols and dibasic acids, with benzoic acid. Methods for preparing oligomeric dibenzoates include steps to reduce or eliminate residual hydroxyl content and improve plasticizer performance by adding acetic anhydride are also disclosed. Propylene glycol adipate and propylene glycol succinate polyesters with benzoic acid end-caps are particularly useful, as are hybrid benzoate/acetate end-capped polyesters formed in the process with acetic anhydride. Caulks, adhesives, sealants, and vinyl compositions comprising the oligomeric end-capped polyesters of the invention are also contemplated.

A novel plasticizer blend(s) useful for plastisol compositions, including organisols, having good solvating properties, good viscosity profiles and compatibility with other plasticizers and solvents traditionally used in plastisols, comprising benzoate ester plasticizer(s) and a compatibilizing plasticizer component. Methods for preparing a plastisol having low viscosity and good rheology characteristics and for rendering a benzoate ester plasticizer, or blends thereof, compatible with organic solvents traditionally used in plastisols, by incorporating the novel plasticizer blend(s), which do not require adjusting the solubility parameters of the solvents to accommodate the plasticizer, are disclosed.

Plasticizer blends and plastisol compositions comprised thereof

Plasticizer blends comprise a triblend of diethylene glycol dibenzoate, dipropylene glycol dibenzoate, and 1,2-propylene glycol dibenzoate, in specified ratios, useful in combination with a multitude of thermoplastic polymers, thermosetting polymers, and elastomeric polymers and numerous applications, including but not limited to plastisols, adhesives, sealants, caulks, architectural coatings, industrial coatings, OEM coatings, inks, overprint varnishes, polishes, and the like. The advantages rendered by the use of the triblend depend on the type of polymer and application in which it is utilized and include among other advantages higher solvating power and lower processing time, low VOC's, reduced plasticizer freeze point, improved gelation and fusion characteristics, higher tensile strength, superior stain and extraction resistance, and improved rheology over traditional diblends of diethylene glycol dibenzoate and dipropylene glycol dibenzoate.

Blends of dibenzoate plasticizers

A unique monobenzoate useful as a plasticizer in polymeric dispersions, such as plastisols and melt compounds. The monobenzoate comprises 3-phenyl propyl benzoate, a benzoate ester heretofore known as a flavoring and fragrance agent, but not previously utilized as a plasticizer in polymeric applications. Depending on the application, the advantages rendered by the use of the inventive monobenzoate include, among other things, excellent solvating properties, low viscosity, viscosity stability, and improved rheology, as well as health, safety and environmental advantages over traditional plasticizers. The monobenzoate may be used alone or in combination with a variety of plasticizers, including but not limited to phthalates, terephthalates, dibenzoates, other monobenzoates, or 1,2-cyclohexane dicarboxylate esters, and mixtures thereof.

Monobenzoate useful as a plasticizer in plastisol compositions

Novel solid benzoate ester compositions are mixtures comprising the trans- and cis-structural isomers of 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol dibenzoate wherein the trans isomer constitutes from 1 to 66 or from 72 to 99 weight percent of the mixture. The properties imparted to a variety of polymer compositions, including hot melt adhesives, cannot be achieved using the commercially available mixture of these isomers.

Compositions comprising structural isomers of 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol dibenzoate and polymer compositions containing same

A novel, low volatility, non-phthalate plasticizer/coalescent blend for use in paints and other polymeric coatings comprises a triblend of diethylene glycol dibenzoate, dipropylene glycol dibenzoate, and 1,2-propylene glycol dibenzoate. The triblend when used in a paint or other coatings achieves a low VOC paint or coating having stable viscosity after three freeze/thaw cycles and equivalent or superior wet edge/open time ratings, gloss ratings, scrub resistance and block resistance when compared to traditional coalescents, including without limitation high VOC coalescents, low VOC non-dibenzoate coalescents and other dibenzoate blends. The triblend may be used as a substitute or alternative coalescent in latex and acrylic emulsion coatings, among others, to achieve a lower VOC content without sacrificing performance properties.

Dibenzoate plasticizers/coalescent blends for low VOC coatings

Plastisols and organosols are provided that include plasticizers that include mono-, di- and triesters of glycerol. The plasticizers are good solvators for polyvinyl chloride and impart low plastisol and organosol viscosities.

Plastisols containing glycerol esters as plasticizers

Novel ester compositions are prepared by reacting 1) at least one diol, glycol or oligomeric glycol with 2) a mixture of at least one aromatic monocarboxylic acid and at least one aliphatic monocarboxylic acid containing from 2 to 4 carbon atoms. The compositions are effective plasticizers for a variety of polymers, particularly those employed in water-borne adhesives. The freezing point of the present ester mixtures and their efficacy as plasticizers and other types of additives and/or modifiers for a variety of polymer compositions can be varied by adjusting the relative concentrations of the aromatic and aliphatic acids used to prepare the ester composition.

Mixed aryl/alkyl diester compositions

Both the viscosity of a plastisol comprising a dispersed polymer, a plasticizer for the polymers and at least one liquid diluent, and exudation of liquids from articles formed from the plastisol are minimized when the difference between 1) the weighted average of the Hildebrand solubility parameter values of all liquid ingredients, including plasticizer, in the plastisol and 2) the Hildebrand solubility parameter of the dispersed polymer is &#xb1;0.6 to &#xb1;1. The plastisols of the present invention are suitable for fabrication into films and molded objects, and as coating materials for a variety of metallic and non-metallic substrates.

Organosol plastisol compositions

This invention provides film-forming compositions, including but not limited to polishes, coatings, adhesives and inks, comprising a at least one acrylic or vinyl acetate polymer or copolymer as a film-forming ingredient and, as the plasticizer, a blend in specified proportions of a) the benzoate of a 6-carbon monohydric alcohol, b) diethylene glycol dibenzoate and c) diethylene glycol monobenzoate.
