A bearing assembly includes an inner ring with an inner raceway and disposable about a first member and an outer ring with an outer raceway disposed about the inner ring. A middle ring is disposed between the inner and outer rings and has an inner intermediate raceway and an outer intermediate raceway and is configured to connect with a second member so as to be rotatable about a central axis through the first member. A first set of rolling elements is disposed between the inner ring and the middle ring and a second set of rolling elements is disposed between the outer ring and the middle ring. The outer ring is sized such that a ratio of the outside diameter to the axial width is greater than eight to one (8:1) and the middle ring is formed of a material different than the inner and outer rings.

A gantry assembly includes a rotor, a stator and a bearing for coupling the rotor and the stator. The bearing includes an inner ring connected with the rotor or stator, an outer ring connected with the other one of the rotor and the stator and rolling elements between the two rings. The ring connected with the stator, preferably the outer ring, includes one or more damping washers disposed between the ring and the stator, each washer being disposed about one threaded fastener connecting the ring with the stator. Also, one or more damping cylinders are each disposed within a mounting hole of the ring connected with the stator and about a threaded fastener disposed within the hole. The bearing ring connected with the rotor may also include damping washers between the ring and the rotor or/and damping cylinders disposed within mounting holes receiving fasteners connecting the ring with the rotor.

A gantry assembly includes a rotor rotatable about a central axis, a stator fixed with respect to the axis and a bearing inner ring connected with the rotor and having an outer circumferential surface providing a least one inner raceway and two opposing axial end. A bearing outer ring is disposed about the inner ring and has an inner circumferential surface providing at least one outer raceway, first and second axial ends, an annular recess extending axially inwardly from the first axial end, and a plurality of threaded mounting holes extending axially-inwardly from the recess and spaced circumferentially about the central axis. An annular damper is disposed within the recess and a plurality of threaded fasteners each extend from the stator, through the damper and into a separate one of the plurality of threaded mounting holes to connect the bearing outer ring with the stator.

A method for making a robot pivot arm assembly includes forming from a rigid, machinable material a circular disk, and forming a circular aperture through the center of the disk. An outer bearing track is formed integrally in the inside surface which defines the aperture, and the apertured disk is positioned in a machining device with a fixturing portion that engages the outer bearing track. An integral outer race, an arm and a gear segment with teeth are then machined into the disk to form the outer portion of the pivot arm assembly. An inner race with an inner bearing track is positioned inside the integral outer race, and rolling bearing elements are inserted into the first and second bearing tracks.
