A display has sufficient resolution to present images as they would appear on other types of image output devices, such as types of printers or displays. In response to a user signal indicating a type of image output devices, data defining an image is used to automatically obtain version data defining a version of the image. The version can be presented on the display to show the image as it would appear when presented by an image output device of the indicated type. The user can indicate a type by selecting a menu item or a button or by providing a sequence of keystrokes. In response to a user signal indicating a parameter value, a version can be presented showing the image as it would appear when presented with the value. When a satisfactory image is displayed, the user can then request presentation of the image by a device of the indicated type. Either data defining the input image from which the displayed image is a version or data defining the currently displayed image can then be transformed to obtain a presentation version for the image output device. A copier or printer that includes the display can use it to perform print previewing.

Presenting an image on a display as it would be presented by another

A digital printer for printing images in response to full-frame, two-dimensional digital image data input from an outside source. The digital printer is a novel combination of a two dimensional backlight for producing full frame illumination in a single flash, a photoreceptor sensitive to light emanating from the backlight, a two-dimensional, transmissive light valve, an imaging system, and a driver. The light valve is disposed between the backlight and the photoreceptor so that light from the backlight is transmitted through the light valve, producing a full-frame, two dimensional image on the photoreceptor in response to a single flash of the backlight. The full-frame, two dimensional image corresponds to a pattern formed on the light valve in response to the full-frame, two dimensional digital image data. The imaging system is disposed between the light valve and the photoreceptor, such that it focuses the full-frame, two dimensional image onto the photoreceptor. The driver is coupled to the light valve, the backlight and the outside source. The driver couples the full-frame, two dimensional digital image data from the outside source to the light valve. The driver also synchronizes the backlight with the light valve such that the backlight flash exposes the light valve after the pattern is set on the light valve in response to the full-frame, two dimensional digital image data.

An array of light control units has an area large enough to present images for direct viewing. The array also has light control units sufficiently dense that ordinary acuity artifacts are not noticeable in presented images when the array is directly viewed at usual viewing distances by a human with normal vision. Signal circuitry can provide signals to the light control units. The array can present an image that includes M colors, where M is more than three, even though each light control unit can only cause presentation of one of a segment with one of a set of N colors, where N is less than M. Data defining an input image with M colors are used to obtain data defining an output image that is a version of the input image but includes, for each light control unit, a color data item indicating one of its set of N colors. The signal circuitry provides signals to the light control units so that each light control unit presents a segment with the color indicated by its color data item. As a result, the array presents the output image so that its appearance to a human with normal vision viewing the array at usual viewing distances is substantially identical to the appearance the input image would have if presented.

Universal display that presents all image types with high image fidelity

A printer includes an active matrix liquid crystal display (AMLCD) light valve with a matrix of a plurality of filter elements, a backlight that emits a plurality of wavelengths of electromagnetic energy that correspond to the plurality of filter elements, and a multi-layer photoreceptor that is sensitive to the plurality of wavelengths of electromagnetic energy. The backlight flash exposes the AMLCD light valve. The distinct wavelengths of electromagnetic energy passing through each of the filter elements of the AMLCD light valve are focused onto the surface of the photoreceptor. Each layer of the photoreceptor is sensitive to only one of the distinct wavelengths of electromagnetic energy passing through the filter elements of the AMLCD light valve. Thus, a full color latent image is flash exposed onto the photoreceptor. A very compact lenslet array is used to focus the image onto the photoreceptor. This reduces the overall space requirements of the printer, making it readily suitable for desktop applications.

An apparatus for imaging books or other bound documents with minimal stress being applied to the book structure, and for successively imaging and turning pages of a book without the need for manual intervention. The book imager includes a support, for placement of a book in an open position, an imager having opposed imaging surfaces capable of simultaneously imaging the entire exposed, facing adjacent pages of the book in a distortion preventing manner, and a page turner. The support and the imager are relatively movable toward and away from one another, from a first position in which imaging is effected, to a second position in which page turning is effected.

The present invention is a digital imaging system for a copier that comprises a full-frame, two-dimensional sensor array to capture a document's image and a full-frame output light valve with backlight to flash expose the image onto a photoreceptor belt. The document is flash exposed to illuminate the page and the full-page image is captured by the full-frame, two dimensional sensor array. The sensor array then reads out the digital image data in response to a driver. The data is then input into the full-frame digital output light valve. The driver provides for the synchronous control of the system. Optionally, an electronic subsystem may perform digital image processing according to user demand--before the data arrives at the output light valve. After image processing (if any), the digital data, supplied to the full-page output light valve, forms a pattern on the display according to the data. The patterned image is then flash exposed by a backlight, through the light valve, and onto a photoreceptor.

The air jet page turning system includes a fluffing jet for separating pages, a pick-off jet for separating the topmost page from the fluffed pages, a force applying jet for urging the topmost page into intimate contact with the imaging device and a page turning jet for driving the topmost page to the opposite side of the book.

A thin-film structure on an insulating substrate includes an array of binary control units with an area of at least 90 cm.sup.2 and a density of at least 60 binary control units per cm. One implementation has an area of approximately 510 cm.sup.2, a diagonal of approximately 33 cm, and a total of approximately 6.3 million binary control units. Each binary control unit has a lead for receiving a unit drive signal, to which it responds by causing presentation of a segment of images presented by the array. Each binary control unit can present a segment with either a first color having a maximum intensity or a second color having a minimum intensity. Each binary control unit's unit drive signal causes the binary control unit to present its first and second colors. The substrate can be glass. Each binary control unit can include an amorphous silicon thin-film transistor (TFT) and a storage capacitor. Each binary control unit can be square. The thin-film structure can be used in an active matrix liquid crystal display (AMLCD), monochrome or, with an appropriate filter, color.

The present invention is a novel book scanner that employs 2-dimensional array detectors attached, either rigidly or rotatably, at a common edge and disposed in a wedge shaped manner. The opposite edges of the arrays are housed in a base portion. The base portion additionally supports backlight to provide the necessary illumination of the book pages and the read-out electronics which output the image data stored in the detectors to other processing units that may use such data.

A color scanner has a plurality of rows of photosensors. Spacers are formed between and around the rows, and a transparent cover sheet is sealed to the device, to form separate channels. An opening is provided in each otherwise sealed channel. The channels are filled with different colored media by evacuating the channels and letting the vacuum draw in different colored media such as liquids or gels.

An improved fold-down tailgate for use on a truck-like vehicle is disclosed. The tailgate of the present invention employs a slotted work surface which permits the ready attachment of various construction implements, such as cargo ramps, extended work surfaces, and a wide variety of vises, clamps and tie-down devices. The tailgate provides improved functionality while maximizing the amount of cargo space in the vehicle.

A device for supporting and clamping workpieces, such as doors or boards, against the ends of vertically-set sawhorses legs in such a way that the edge of such workpieces is located at a convenient working height. Such operations as planing, hinge mortising, routing, belt sanding or the like are facilitated by this arrangement. An internally threaded tube (20) accepts at one end a bolt (40) carrying leg clamping jaw (32). At the other end the tube (20) accepts another bolt (54) carrying a movable elongated door clamping jaw (44). A third, non-movable leg clamping jaw (26) is affixed to tube (20) about 76.2 mm (3') from jaw (32). The entire door support clamp is clamped to a sawhorse leg between jaws (32) and (44), resulting in the remaining portion of tube (20) being cantilevered out beyond the sawhorse leg. This resultant cantilevered support area (60) of tube (20) is then available for support of workpieces with clamping readily available by jaw (44).

A color scan array for linear imaging employing a matrix of photo-sensor and thin-film transistor (TFT) elements aligned in parallel rows with each row representing the same color and sub-pixels of a linear array of pixels. The rows of sub-pixels are sub-divided into groups, with the TFT of each color group commonly connected to a data line, and with plural gate lines provided each connected to the corresponding TFTs of the sub-pixels of each group pixel. The result is a short, compact sensor with a relatively small number of crossings and thus reduced capacitance and increased responsivity.

A multilayer electrode structure is deposited on or supported in intimate contact with an electro-optic element to define a substantially continuous, transformation-free, branching, fringe field controlled electro-optic waveguide. Transformations are minimized because the fringe field induced waveguiding channels all have substantially equal widths and depths, and discontinuities are reduced by providing bridging electrodes to span any gaps that might otherwise exist in the fringe fields.
