A method for welding together members consisting of precipitation age hardened materials includes the steps of selecting a weld filler material that has substantially the same composition as the materials being joined, and an age hardening characteristic temperature age threshold below that of the aging kinetic temperature range of the materials being joined, whereby after welding the members together, the resulting weld and heat affected zone (HAZ) are heat treated at a temperature below that of the kinetic temperature range of the materials joined, for obtaining substantially the same mechanical characteristics for the weld and HAZ, as for the parent material of the members joined.

Method and apparatus for welding precipitation hardenable materials

This invention relates to a composition of a region joining two members treated thermodynamically by a process set forth by the present invention. In accordance with one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a region comprising a solidified bead containing generally between 1.6 and 2.0% beryllium, a melt and mix zone containing generally between 0.6 and 1.8% beryllium, a recrystallized zone containing generally between 0.6 and 1.0% beryllium, and an overaged zone containing generally between 0.3 and 0.8% beryllium.

This invention relates to a process for thermodynamically treating a region joining two members. In accordance with one aspect of the present invention, are the steps of heating the region to a first temperature generally within a range of 750.degree. F. and 850.degree. F. so as to diffuse a strengthening material in the region into a heat affected zone between the members; maintaining the first temperature for a first selected time within a range of 3 to 20 hours so as to raise the percentage of strengthening material diffusing into the heat affected zone; heating the region to a second temperature generally within a range of 900.degree. F. to 1000.degree. F. so as to initiate hardening of the heat affected zone; maintaining the second temperature for a second selected time generally within a range of 0.5 to 5 hours so as to harden the heat affected zone with minimal decrease in hardening of regions outside the heat affected zone; and cooling the region to room temperature. This invention also relates to a composition of a region joining two members treated thermodynamically by a process set forth by the present invention. Process for thermodynamically treating a region joining two members

There is provided an improved process for isothermal shaping of a titanium-containing workpiece in a hot die. A precoat lubricant composition including a glassy component and a solid lubricant such as graphite dispersed in an organic medium is applied to the workpiece, and the workpiece heated to a temperature sufficient to remove the organic medium to leave a residue of glassy material and graphite on the workpiece. The workpiece is then inserted in a heated split die, and the die loaded to alter the shape of the workpiece. The ratio of the solid lubricant to the glassy component is at least one to one. The particle size of the glassy component is important to the surface character of the finally shaped workpiece.

Process for isothermally shaping a titanium-containing metal workpiece

A composition useful in isothermal forging or sizing of metal articles comprising a major amount of a glass moiety fusible at a temperature below forging or sizing temperature, and a minor amount of a finely divided abrasive moiety dispersed in the glass moiety and having a predetermined hardness.

Method of isothermal forging

A forging compound particularly adapted for hot die dwell forging of titanium and its alloys comprises boundary layer particles (boron nitride or graphite) and a major quantity (more than 60% by weight) of vitreous components. The vitreous components comprise diboron trioxide and silica frit containing a metal oxide wetting agent. In a preferred form, the forging lubricant comprises about 14 to 25% by weight boron nitride particles, balance, vitreous components. The latter comprise about 60% to 75% by weight diboron trioxide, balance silica glass containing cobalt oxide wetting agent in an amount of 1.0 to 3% by weight of the vitreous components. All the foregoing ingredients may be dispersed in a coatable carrier preferably comprising a solvent, e.g., xylene, in which a resin binder is dissolved. A method of using the lubricant includes coating workpieces with the lubricant, heating the workpieces to forging temperature, and imposing forging pressure on the workpiece within an enclosed die for a dwell period to creep-flow the workpiece metal into conformity with the forging die.
