An associative media architecture and platform that enables communication of media objects between participants using a variety of communication infrastructures and media presentation devices as determined by the users and owners of the media assets. Media assets formatted as media representations are associated with a globally unique identifier to form a media object. The media object can contain any media representation irrespective of format. The media object is an elemental entity having characteristics that are preferably retained throughout the life of the media object. The media object may be owned by one or more participants. The media object may be associated with owner preferences that can influence the context in which the media object is presented. The media object may exist in multiple storage locations, although each stored instance of the media object retains its unique identification and remains associated with the owner preferences.

An optical scanner for reading indicia of variable light reflectivity, such as bar code symbols, having a light source for producing a light beam for scanning a target; a sensor for collecting the reflected light from the target; and various light collection systems, including a louver formed from an array of thin slats positioned adjacent to the sensor so that light directed along substantially only one angle reaches the sensor, as well as imaging/diffusing optical systems.

Light collection systems in electro-optical readers

A system for estimating a velocity of a stress wave induced in a log or tree stem is used to maximize the value of wood products produced. An accelerometer is placed against the log while the log is struck with a pneumatic hammer. By monitoring the signals received at the accelerometer, the velocity of stress wave can be determined. Based on the velocity, an estimate of the modulus of elasticity (MOE) for the wood in the log is made. A price table is selected that relates different sizes of lumber having the determined modulus of elasticity to a current market value. The log is then cut such that the value of the lumber produced is maximized.

Log cutting optimization system

The instant invention is a single unit providing both breakfast cereal, milk, and bowl including, in addition, means for mixing the milk with the cereal. The breakfast cereal is stored in a cereal cavity which later serves as the bowl. The milk is stored in a milk carton which is stored in a milk carton cavity. A spoon is preferentially also provided with the system so that everything the user needs to consume the breakfast cereal is provided. A trough is provided between the milk carton cavity and cereal cavity inclined downwardly from a position adjacent to and below the milk carton cavity toward the cereal cavity allowing milk leaving the milk carton to flow toward and enter the cereal cavity where it may mix with the cereal located therein. The aseptic packaging of the milk carton is provided with a frangible aperture located near the lowermost edge thereof and positioned adjacent to and above the trough leading into the cereal cavity when the milk carton is properly placed within the milk carton cavity. Preferably, the spoon is provided with a piercing means on its handle adapted to pierce the frangible aperture thereby allowing milk within the milk carton to drain into the trough where it will subsequently enter the cereal cavity. This allows the user quickly and easily to remove milk from the milk carton for mixing with the cereal in the cereal cavity.

Comestibles container

A diaper having a disposable insert and a reusable cover is provided. The insert is held in place relative to the cover by a hook and loop closure system operating through apertures extending through the insert. The insert may include a liquid absorbant layer. The inserts may be provided attached end to end by a perforated connection to facilitate tearing and consequent separation of the inserts. In addition the inserts may be stacked to provide easy access. A design may be applied to the outside of the resuable cover.
