A method and apparatus of activating electric wireline firing systems in which a firing pin is restrained against movement toward a detonator until application of sufficient voltage to the apparatus. The firing pin is not permitted to move immediately upon application of voltage to the apparatus thereby providing a period during which voltage may be interrupted to prevent detonation of the system. The requisite voltage which must be applied to the apparatus is relatively high thereby ensuring against premature detonation of the system due to high radio frequencies, stray voltages or other electrical influences.

Method and apparatus for activating an electric wireline firing system

The invention provides an improved wireline that comprises one or more insulated conductors contained within a smooth walled metal sheath; which improved wireline is satisfactory to perform all of the normal wireline operations in an earth borehole and particularly in very deep boreholes; and in which the sheath material of the wireline is a metal having a high yield strength to weight ratio, and the sheath is swaged into intimate contact with the inner insulated conductor or conductors, such that the weight of the inner conductor or conductors and insulation is effectively supported by the sheath.

Method of making wireline apparatus for use in earth boreholes

Borehole orienting apparatus is provided wherein motion is imparted to a permanent magnet assembly to generate a moving magnetic field and receiver means are provided such that measurable signals are induced therein when the magnetic field is distorted due to the presence of a ferrous anomaly. The receiver means is rotated to produce an azimuthal scan such that there are induced in the receiver means signals from which the azimuthal location of the anomaly can be determined.
