The butt of a deep-sea fishing rod is adapted to be manually held by a fisherman while the fisherman is standing near the rail, transom or bow of a fishing boat. Then, when the fisherman becomes tired, he telescopes the butt into a reel-raising rod-lengthening extender socket in nonrotatable relationship, following which he sits down in a fishing chair and inserts the lower end of the extender socket into the chair gimbal. The construction of the butt and the extender socket are such that even large axial forces directed downwardly toward the bucket harness as the fisherman grips the rod between the reel and the tip while fighting a fish, does not shorten the combination of the butt and extender socket. The reel is thus maintained at the proper elevated condition for fighting a fish while the fisherman is seated, and additional leverage is created whereby the fisherman is better able to fight the fish, and the overall rod length is increased sufficiently to allow the fishing line to clear the gunwale of the boat.

Rod extension and method of using the extension in deep-sea fishing

An outrigger or downrigger fishing clip comprises a U-shaped arm pivoted to a body to define a cavity between the arm and body in which is positioned a roller journaled in the arm so that a fishing line extending through the clip between the arm and body rides friction-free over the roller. Shrouds extend from the body over the roller ends to prevent a line from slipping over the ends of the roller and getting caught between the roller ends and the pivoted arm. A latch link spans the arm and body, extending through outwardly opening mating recesses in the arm and body and has a cam element engaging the free end of the roller of the shaft. The latch link is resiliently pressed against the body within the recess to provide a selectively adjustable force that resists pivotal release of the arm and of the tensioned fishing line entrained over the roller.

Fishing clip

An outrigger fishing clip comprises a U-shaped arm pivoted to a body to define a cavity between the arm and body in which is positioned one side of a roller journaled in the arm so that a fishing line extending through the clip between the arm and body rides friction-free over the roller. A latch member spans the arm and body having a cam element engaging the free end of the pivoted arm and resiliently pressed against the body to provide a predetermined adjustable force that resists pivotal release of the arm and of the tensioned fishing line entrained over its roller.

Outrigger fishing clip

An integral butt and reel seat for an offshore trolling rod is made by swaging a unitary tubular member to form a rearwardly tapering butt section, a transition section tapering forwardly from a forward end of the butt section to a decreased diameter and a cylindrical reel seat section that extends forwardly from the transition section and has a forward end thereof threaded for reception of an adjustable threaded reel hood. A second reel hood is fixed to the reel seat section and the forward end of the tubular member is sealed by means of a plug inserted deep within the reel seat section and provided with a forwardly projecting rib that aligns a rod ferrule slidably received within the forward end of the integral member. A gimbal knock is fixed to and seals the rear end of the integral member.
