A driving tool with a flywheel, a driver, an actuator and a roller that is moveable between an unactuated position and an actuated position. Positioning of the roller in the actuated position forces an engagement surface on the driver into contact with a rotating edge of the flywheel to transfer energy from the flywheel to the driver so that the driver will translate along an axis. The actuator at least partially initiates movement of the roller from the unactuated position to the actuated position.

Flywheel configuration for a power tool

An explosive assisted fastener for joining steel framing members. The fastener is comprised of an integrally formed member having a head section, a stem section and a tip section, such that the head section is disposed at a first end of the stem section and adapted to be linearly driven by a driving device into the framing members, and the tip section is disposed at a distal second end of the stem section and adapted to penetrate the framing members. The fastener further includes an explosive material embedded in the tip section of the fastener. In operation, the fastener is driven through the framing members until the head section of the fastener seats against an outer surface of the framing members. Once driven into place, the explosive material residing in the fastener is detonated, thereby radially expanding the tip section of the fastener and preventing removal of the fastener from the framing members.

A fastening tool including a housing, a magazine connected to the housing for storing a fastener, a driving mechanism disposed within the housing for driving the fastener into a workpiece, a trigger assembly pivotally attached to the housing for activating the driving mechanism, the trigger assembly comprising a main trigger, pivotally attached to the housing and a supplemental trigger pivotally attached to the main trigger; and a contact trip assembly comprising an upper contact trip contacting the supplemental trigger, a lower contact trip connected to the upper contact trip, wherein the upper and lower contact trips have teeth that mesh together for locking the upper and lower contact trips.

Contact trip assembly for fastening tool

A rigid watercraft has a three-sectioned hull including a main hull portion and a pair of flotation-sealed outside sponsons at the starboard and port sides thereof. A double-hinge pivot is disposed between each sponson and the main hull portion of the watercraft. The double-hinge pivot has respective pivot axes which are parallel to each other. The watercraft has a first storage or transport position in which the pair of sponsons are folded within the main hull portion, and the watercraft has a second operational position in which the pair of sponsons are pivoted outwardly of the main hull portion of the watercraft, thereby forming a smooth continuation of the hull in the water. The watercraft has a releasable latch between each sponson and the main hull portion of the watercraft. The releasable latch automatically locks each sponson to the main hull portion of the watercraft as the respective sponson has been pivoted outwardly therefrom. The watercraft has a lip formed longitudinally on each sponson and a longitudinal edge on the main hull. The lip presses against the edge on the main hull when the watercraft is in the operational position.

Compact semi-collapsible watercraft

A portable circular saw includes motor-and-gear case pivotally supported on a guide shoe by a rear pivot mechanism for rotation about a transverse rear pivot axis, thus allowing for selective adjustment of the blade cutting depth on the opposite side of the shoe. In such an arrangement, the depth of cut setting is increased and decreased when the motor-and-gear case is rotated relative to the shoe in respective first and second directions, while an upper pivotal blade guard, which is mounted on the motor-and-gear case for rotation about the spindle, rotates in opposite rotational directions in response to respective increases and decreases in the depth of cut setting. Cam and cam follower mechanisms are provided for maintaining the riving knife and the blade and shoe in the same relative angular orientation in a fore-and-aft cutting plane regardless of the depth of cut setting. Such riving knife actuation is accomplished by such mechanisms in response to the rotation of the rear-pivoted motor-and-gear case and the corresponding opposite rotation of the front-pivoted upper gear case.

In a 2 pole universal motor for a circular saw a secondary winding provides dynamic braking. Both run and brake windings are split electrically with respect to the armature. All windings are double-ended and wiring and winding is arranged so that all windings may be terminated directly to fixed termination points, four at each end of the stator, providing for axially oriented plug-in connection of brushes at the commutator end and switch and line at the fan end. There are no jumpers within the stator.

In a portable circular saw depth of cut adjustment is effected by pivoting movement between a shoe 24 (which supports the saw on a workpiece) and a motor and gear case housing 26 (carrying the saw blade 12) about a pivot connection 28 rearward of the motor and gear case housing. Forward of the housing 26 an upwardly extending arcuate depth slide 38, fixed to the shoe 24, slidably engages an arcuate depth guide 40 carried by the motor and gear case housing 26. Towards the upper end of the depth slide 38, and in generally fixed relation to it, a clamping assembly 42 selectively clamps the depth slide 38 and depth guide 40 together to establish a depth of cut adjustment setting. The essentially fixed relationship of the locking knob 100 of the clamping assembly 42 to the shoe 24 mean that the operations of changing depth adjustment setting may be made without changing operator's hand positions on the saw. In addition, the fixed position of the knob 100 in sawing operations mean that by design, suitably shaped, sized and positioned, it may be used as an auxiliary handle in guiding the saw in operations.

Depth of cut adjustment for a portable circular saw

A field subassembly is assembled by positioning two coil supports adjacent respective core end faces of a ferromagnetic core. The core-engaging surfaces of the coil supports and the core end faces have respective surfaces which are uninterrupted by projections. During the assembly of the field, fasteners are pushed into the respective coil supports and the core such that the fasteners engage mounting holes in the coil support with a press-fit. After the field is wound, a brush holder subassembly is also pressed onto the fasteners and the resultant core subassembly is connected to a field housing by driving the fasteners in a conventional fashion. In the preferred embodiment, the fasteners provide a three-point contact with mounting holes formed in the coil supports and the brush holder subassembly. This enables the fasteners to maintain the coil supports and the brush holder subassembly in alignment with the core while shearing a minimum of material from the coil supports and brush holder subassembly when the fasteners are pushed into their respective mounting holes. Then, the same fasteners remain with the subassembly to connect the field subassembly to the field housing.

Field subassembly for an electric motor

A locking mechanism for a rotary power machine, such as a hand-held power tool, includes a housing-mounted locking pin manually actuatable from a retracted position to an extended, operative position in which the lock pin is received within a pin-receiving bore formed in one of the power transmitting components of the machine. A wedge-like cam or ramp is positioned adjacent to the pin-receiving bore to engage the extended end of the lock pin when the rotating components of the machine are in motion to lift the lock pin away from the pin-receiving bore to prevent accidental engagement of the locking mechanism while machine components are moving. In the preferred embodiment, an output gear is provided with a plurality of ramps and associated pin-receiving bores and is formed as a unitary part using powdered metal fabricating techniques.

Locking mechanism for a rotary power machine

An annular composite washer assembly provides a 'soft' mount for a tool element subassembly mounted on the threaded output spindle of a portable grinder or other power tool. The composite washer includes a pair of flat annular washers and a molded body therebetween. The body has integrally-molded inner and outer annular bands joined integrally with the inner and outer diameters of the respective washers. A first pair of blind axial pockets, diametrically opposed to one another, extends through the first washer and the body and terminates at the second washer. A second pair of blind axial pockets, diametrically opposed to one another and shifted circumferentially with respect to the first pair of blind axial pockets (preferably by ninety degrees) extends through the second washer, through the body, and terminates at the first washer. A second embodiment includes a first and second set of three equidistantly circumferentially spaced pockets, one set formed through the first washer, and the other set formed through the second washer. The pockets formed through the second washer are shifted circumferentially by approximately 60.degree. with respect to the respective pockets formed through the first washer.

Composite washer assembly

A double-insulated portable electric tool has a housing with a pistol-grip switch handle portion and a switch cover portion removably secured to the switch handle portion forwardly thereof. An electric switch is mounted on the back of the cover and is provided with an actuating member. A trigger is mounted on the front of the cover and is coupled to the switch actuating member. The switch is accessible only upon removal of the switch cover from the switch handle; and even unauthorized removal of the trigger will not render the switch accessible. As a result, the switch may be replaced easily without an inadvertent interference with the double-insulating feature of the tool.

A brush holder assembly has a body portion with a through opening and an externally accessible lateral opening communicating with the through opening and forming an internal shoulder within the body portion. A brush insert is slidably received within the through opening of the body portion and has an integral connection tab received within the lateral opening. The tab is bent over the shoulder to preclude axial withdrawal of the insert in one direction away from the body. A brush lead has a quick-connection terminal slidably received over the tab to make electrical connection to the insert within the lateral opening of the body. A brush is slidably received within the insert and extends beyond one end of the insert to engage a commutator. The other end of the insert is covered by a shunt cap, and a shunt is disposed between the shunt cap and the brush. A removable brush cap is secured to the outer end of the body, and a conical spring is disposed between the shunt cap and the brush cap. The enlarged end of the conical spring is seated within a blind axial bore in the brush cap, and the center of the spring bears against the shunt cap.
