A back-up pad is provided over an anvil surface of a back-up plate, and between the anvil surface and a sealing surface of a sealing die, in an apparatus for forming seals between layers of film material. The back-up pad has a slip surface on one side thereof and a spring surface on an opposite side thereof, the slip surface opposing the sealing face of the die so that the layers of film material pass between the sealing die and the back-up pad during seal formation. The spring surface is comprised of a plurality of outwardly extending resilient spring loops that act against the back-up plate during seal formation, the spring loops resiliently urging the layers of film material against the sealing face to effect seal formation between the film layers while cushioning the film layers to prevent damage to the film layers due to drag between layers and the die face.

Method and apparatus for making improved seals between polymeric film

An improved apparatus and method for providing uniform fin-type back seals with flexible packaging material for use in conjunction with form-fill-and-seal machines is disclosed which utilizes a moveable tucker plate disposed between the mated edges of the flexible packaging material and the body of the packaging material. When sealing, the tucker plate moves against the body of the packaging material and prevents lateral movement of such material during the sealing operation. The tucker plate is joined to a sealing platen in a manner which maintains a fixed distance between the tucker plate and the sealing platen until a threshold sealing pressure is exceeded.

Method and apparatus for forming fin-type back seals

A bag having an article applied to an inside surface thereof is formed in a continuous bag-making operation by conveying a bag-making film web and a continuous strip of material in joinable proximity with each other. The article is formed by severing the strip of material and at least one edge portion of the severed article is bonded to the continuous web of bag film. The longitudinal margins of the web are then brought together and bonded to form a tube with the article bonded to the inner surface of the tube, and bags are formed and severed from the tube with the article bonded to one inner surface of the bag.

A method and apparatus for providing a fin-type back seal on packages produced in a vertical form and fill machine utilizes a web having cohesive coating stripes on the edges thereof which are juxtapositioned by forming and then guided to a cold sealing zone. A cold seal assembly with a pressure-biased grooved roller and complementary platen apply rolling pressure to the cohesively striped area without the application of external heat to provide a good seal. The unit is adjustable universally so as provided adaptation to various styles and types of existing machines.

Method and apparatus forming fin-type back seal using cohesive sealants

An automatic form-and-fill packaging machine especially adapted for the ultrasonic sealing of food products in flexible bags from ultrasonically sealable flexible packaging material, and a method to utilize said machine. A packaging machine is provided with a first ultrasonic back seal forming unit for producing a continuous longitudinal back seal on the bag, and a second ultrasonic sealing unit provided in a pair of jaw members which are adapted to form the end seals of the bag perpendicular to the direction of travel of the packaging material. The second ultrasonic sealing unit is provided with a horn and an anvil in opposing jaw members, such that when the jaws are shut, the flexible packaging material is tensioned against sealing land areas to provide the end seals.

A method and apparatus for forming and sealing bags in a continuous or intermittent manner where the bags can be filled during the forming operation. Specifically, there is disclosed an apparatus for supplying a sheet or film of bag material to a mechanism for forming the sheet into a tube having overlapping edges in a longitudinal direction. A series of plates are arranged in the forming apparatus for applying adhesive in spaced lines or strips on opposed surfaces of the overlapping edges. After the adhesive is applied in this manner the opposed surfaces of the overlapped edges are pressed together to seal the edges. The tube is sealed in a transverse direction at the bottom, filled in a conventional manner, sealed in a transverse direction at the top, and then cut to form the bag filled with food or other material, ready for distribution and sale.

Method and apparatus for sealing bags

A method and apparatus are disclosed herein for detecting possibly defectively-sealed bags and for preventing said bags from being filled. A sensor is provided to develop a first signal upon detection of a defect in a line of adhesive on flexible bag-forming material moving past the sensor. The first signal is used to generate an output signal at a time corresponding to the time when the defect-containing portion of the bag-forming material has moved from the sensor into position to be filled with product. Preferably, said filling position is located a plurality of bag lengths downstream from said sensor.

Method and apparatus for detecting possibly defectively-sealed bags

Plastic film in sheet form is supplied to a forming unit which forms it into tubular form with overlapping or fin-type edges. The edges are then caused to pass along an anvil and the horn of an ultrasonic sealing unit is positioned adjacent the edges for effecting ultrasonic sealing of the edges, the edges of the film passing through a gap between the horn and the anvil. An adjustable guide wheel is provided for ensuring that the edges are guided into proper relationship for ultrasonic sealing. The apparatus includes an adjustable rigid connection between the forming unit and the ultrasonic sealing apparatus for establishing a proper relationship between the forming unit and the ultrasonic unit and for providing the necessary rigidity. In order to ensure that the ultrasonic unit is effectively energized only when the film is moving therethrough, a tachometer or other speed-sensitive device responsive to movement of the sheet film is provided. A signal developed by this tachometer is transmitted to the ultrasonic sealing unit to ensure that the unit is effectively energized only when the film is moving through the sealing area and to control the level of energization of the ultrasonic unit in accordance with the speed of movement of the film. The horn is mounted on a support for adjustable movement toward and away from the anvil to vary the pressure exerted against the film edges. A transducer is mounted for movement into engagement with the support, the transducer being suitable for generating a signal indicative of the pressure exerted by the horn against the film edges.
