A potting compound for electronic components comprises a first composition of asphalt and sand and a second composition that attenuates the forces normally applied by the first composition when it is used alone. The force attenuator preferably comprises solvent-refined heavy paraffinic petroleum oil from about 0.1 to 20 wt % of the compound.

The restrike time for re-light up of an arc discharge lamp may be decreased by including at least one refractory bimetallic start up electrode that provides a shorter arc path intermediate the main arc path in a cool state, but when heated withdraws to have a relatively longer arc path. The longer arc path in the hot state results in a relatively higher path impedance that can be used by itself or in combination with a supplemental impedance device to extinguish the starting arc in favor of the main arc. The withdrawn bimetallic starting electrode then does not interfere with the main arc function.

In a preferred embodiment of the invention the strain relief takes the form of a loop formed in the lead-in.

A quartz arc tube for a metal halide lamps and its method of making are described. The quartz arc tube has a cylindrical design which promotes a nearly symmetric longitudinal surface temperature profile during operation. The profile has a maximum temperature of about 900&deg; C. which allows for longer operating life at high average wall loadings.

In a metal halide arc discharge lamp having a light emitting arc discharge tube surrounded by a heat absorbing, light transmissive shroud hermetically sealed within an outer lamp envelope, more nearly isothermal operation of the arc tube surface is achieved by using a shroud having a geometry (e.g., a hollow frustum of a cone) such that the shroud is closer to the cooler portions of the arc tube than to the hotter portions. At steady state lamp operation, the shroud absorbs heat emitted by the arc tube and radiates a portion of the absorbed heat back to the arc tube. By having a shroud geometry and spacing such that the inner surface of the shroud is closest to the coolest portions of the arc tube and furthest away from the hottest portions of the arc tube, the shroud radiates more heat back to the cooler portions, thereby providing more nearly isothermal operation of the surface of the arc tube than can be accomplished with a coaxial, cylindrical shroud or no shroud.

High intensity discharge lamp with substantially isothermal arc tube

A new and improved microfocus radiography system incorporating a novel x-ray collimating device for eliminating shadow anomalies caused by secondary radiation from materials within the path of x-rays emitting from an x-ray source. The improved system includes a body defining an opening through which primary radiation may pass from a focal spot x-ray source toward a sample, an x-ray window covering the distal end of the opening, x-ray detection means, and an internal collimator to suppress secondary radiation. The window is penetrable by primary radiation passing through the opening with negligible generation of secondary radiation. The collimator defines an aperture and is disposed along the path of the radiation between said focal spot and said window so as to attenuate any passing primary radiation not directly striking the x-ray window. The collimator is formed from a material having a low vapor pressure at temperatures and pressures at which the system is operated. Portions of said collimator exposed to the passing primary radiation are formed from a material selected to attenuate any passing primary radiation not directly striking the x-ray window, and which generates negligible secondary radiation on exposure to said primary radiation.

X-ray apparatus of the type in which X-rays are generated by an electron beam impinging on a focal spot on a metal target. Heat from the focal spot is focused onto a lateral effect photodiode, the electrical output of which changes with changes in the position of the focal spot. This output is fed back to the electron beam deflection coils to change the direction of the electron beam and steer it back toward the original, intended position of the focal spot on the target.

X-ray apparatus

A rapid start fluorescent lamp having an external conductive strip has a resistive element in the lamp base electrically connected to the conductive strip and a pin of the lamp base. The resistive element is made from a material which has a volume resistivity of about 10.sup.5 to about 10.sup.8 ohm-cm and a deflection temperature greater than 250.degree. C. at 1,820 kilo dynes/cm.sup.2. The resistive element is mounted in the lamp base metal housing and supports the metal pins or the resistive element is made into a washer shaped element and attached to one of the pins on the inside of the lamp base.
