A method for manufacturing cumene hydroperoxide comprises reacting cumene and oxygen in the presence of a water phase comprising aqueous ammonia, and in the absence of an additive comprising an alkali or alkaline earth metal, to form cumene hydroperoxide. A system for producing cumene hydroperoxide comprises a cumene feed in fluid communication with a reactor having a cumene hydroperoxide oxidate outlet; an oxygen feed in fluid communication with the reactor; and an ammonia feed in fluid communication with the cumene feed and/or the reactor, wherein the cumene feed, the oxygen feed, the ammonia feed, and the reactor are free of an additive comprising an alkali or alkaline earth metal.

Method and system for manufacturing cumene hydroperoxide

This invention concerns the field of environmental protection and can be used to clean industrial waste gases containing products that cause resin formation which fouls catalysts. It is proposed to clean industrial waste gases of aromatic and aliphatic compounds at 120-160 &deg; C. by means of passing waste gases first through a catalytic composition consisting of a guard bed (to protect the palladium catalyst) with a specific surface 0.2-1.0 m &middot;g , which is initially roasted at 800-1,350&deg; C. and second through a palladium catalyst bed (0.1-3% palladium, deposited on an active aluminum oxide). The proposed method makes it possible to clean industrial waste gases of harmful substances (for example, methanol, cumene) with a degree of destruction not less than 97-98% in the presence of aromatic hydroperoxides which cause resin formation and catalyst fouling on other catalytic systems.

Method of cleaning industrial waste gases

Injection of even very small amounts of supplemental water to the spent-air stream at points upstream from the heat exchanger cooler(s) used in processing spent-air streams from a cumene-to-phenol process allows these heat exchanger coolers to act as both extractors and condensers. It is therefore possible to recover from the heat exchanger cooler a methanol/water condensate, thereby substantially reducing the amount of methanol in the spent-air stream prior to discharge. Thus, known methods for manufacture of phenol from cumene in which an oxygen-containing gas stream is passed through liquid cumene to produce an oxidate product and a spent-air stream comprising methanol and cumene and a saturating amount of water; and in which the spent-air stream is passed through one or more heat exchanger coolers and a carbon bed prior to discharge can be improved.

Extractive removal of methanol from cumene-to-phenol process vent gas

Greater efficiency in a water-alkaline emulsion cumene oxidation process using a cascade of reactors is obtained by splitting the reactor cascade into 2 stages with the first stage utilizing NH.sub.4 NaCO.sub.3 as the active carbonate in the stage containing less than 18% by weight cumene hydroperoxide and using Na.sub.2 CO.sub.3 as the active carbonate in the stage containing more than 18% by weight cumene hydroperoxide. By directly injecting ammonia into a recycle stream organic acids are efficiently neutralized. A counter current water wash of the second stage also increases process efficiency by scrubbing out unwanted impurities. Control of pH in the process improves efficiency and reduces impurity levels.

Cumene oxidation process

The present invention is an improved method for the recovery of phenol from a cleavage mass resulting from the sulfuric acid cleavage of cumene hydroperoxide comprising neutralizing the cleavage mass, forming an aqueous phase and an organic phase, separating the organic phase into an acetone-rich stream and a phenol-rich stream, removing phenol tars from the phenol-rich stream and cracking the phenol tars wherein the improvement comprises maintaining the pH of the cleavage mass during neutralization between 4.0 and about 4.9 whereby the sulfuric acid is converted to the bisulfate salt and substantially no free sulfuric acid remains in the cleavage mass and corrosion of process equipment is reduced. As a result of this improved process, a phenol tar waste stream containing less than about 4 parts per million by weight of chromium is obtained.

Removal and neutralization of acid catalyst from products of cumene

This invention relates to processing of a mixture of tars produced in phenol manufacture and in bisphenol manufacture. The heating of a bottom liquid from a bisphenol-A process together with phenol tar from in a cumene-to-phenol process in a distillation column-type thermal cracking reactor at 290.degree.-360.degree. C. at a mass ratio of 1:(1-10) is employed. The process is carried out by feed entering into the middle of the column and valuable products removed as overhead.

Co-cracking of BPA and phenol process tars

An improved phenol tar cracking process using a rectification column as a hydrocracker obtains an increased yield of valuable products, phenol, cumene and alpha-methylstyrene, by taking from 50 to 100% of the acetophenone in the reactor overhead with the cracked product stream.
