A control system for a cooking appliance can operate in first or second modes of operation. In the first mode, a consumer is required to input both a temperature parameter and a time parameter before initiating a cooking operation. Once the cooking operation has completed, the control system operates the cooking appliance in a low temperature mode for a predetermined period. In this manner, a cooked food item is maintained at a reduced temperature so that the food item does not burn. In the second mode, the consumer can choose to bypass the required time input parameter so as to operate the cooking appliance based solely on the temperature parameter.

A cooking appliance includes a frame having a bottom wall for supporting heating elements and a peripheral side portion that extends from and about an outer periphery of the bottom wall so as to define a chassis upon which is arranged a cooktop. The peripheral side portion includes a plurality of openings that lead into the chassis. A control box is mounted in the chassis for housing control elements and associated electronics. The control box includes a plurality of side walls, with at least one of the side walls being provided with a vent which opens into the chassis. A fan is mounted within the chassis wherein, when the fan is activated, a cooling airflow is developed, with a first portion being drawn directly into the chassis, while a second portion first enters the control box housing before being directed into the chassis. A cover can be disposed beneath the chassis to guide and disperse the airflow.

A system used to program and coordinate the cooking operations for two or more ovens such that the cooking operations are completed at the same time, independent of particular setting variations. In accordance with a preferred embodiment of the invention, a single controller is utilized to program each of the ovens, with the controller incorporating an auto sequencing feature which causes the different cooking operations to be automatically performed, while terminating at the same time. Preferably, the system enables a second cooking operation to be programmed and initiated after a first cooking operation, while still providing for the auto sequencing of the cooking operation. A control system for a cooking appliance enables a consumer to perform a complete cooking operation regardless of whether food is placed into an oven after a preheating operation or without initially preheating the oven. When the consumer does not intend to allow the oven to be preheated prior to inserting the food to be cooked therein, the consumer can select a no preheat operation wherein the lack of preheating is automatically compensated for, preferably by causing the oven to perform the cooking operation in two stages. Initially, the oven is operated at full output capacity for a first predetermined period and thereafter operated at various heat outputs during a subsequent plurality of stages until the cooking operation is complete. In this manner the food is completely cooked without the need to add additional time to the overall cooking operation.

A versatile surface cooking cartridge for use in an appliance includes a lower container portion to which is attached a lid member. A first heating element is arranged in the lower container portion and a second heating element is carried by and extends along a lower surface of the lid member. One of a replaceable rack or cooking plate can be positioned in the lower container portion, above the first heating element, to enable food items to be cooked by heat generated by either or both of the first and second heating elements. The cooking plate preferably has a sloped surface leading to a recess trap for collecting byproducts generated during cooking upon the plate. The cooking plate can define a grilling plate, a griddle plate, or a reversible, combination grilling/griddle plate.

A versatile surface cooking cartridge for use in an appliance includes a lower container portion to which is attached a lid member. A first heating element is arranged in the lower container portion and a second heating element is carried by and extends along a lower surface of the lid member. Separate controls are provided for selectively operating the first and second heating elements, either individually or simultaneously. A rack is positioned in the lower container portion, above the first heating element, to enable food items to be cooked on the rack by either or both of the first and second heating elements. In addition to or in the alternative of performing a selected cooking operation within the lower container portion, the upper surface of the lid member preferably defines a further cooking surface upon which additional cooking operations can be performed through operation of at least the second heating element.

A ventilation system for an appliance, such as a clothes dryer or a cooking device, includes a blower unit which is located remote from the appliance and connected to the appliance through an elongated duct. To control the operation of the blower unit, a transmitter is used to send signals to a receiver electrically connected to the blower unit. In accordance with certain preferred embodiments of the invention, radio frequency, ultrasonic or other similar types of signals are directed through the duct to the receiver. In accordance with another preferred embodiment, a power line transmitter is utilized. A method of remotely controlling the operation of the appliance ventilation system is also provided.

An induction cooking apparatus and method for inductively heating cookware is provided. An analog/digital circuit, including a microprocessor, generates a plurality of gating pulses for operating the power inverter circuit and monitors the operation of the power inverter circuit. The microprocessor provides signals to start and stop the inverter circuit, and determines a period of uninterrupted power inverter circuit operation corresponding to a desired cooking temperature. Analog circuitry is provided for sustaining operation of the power inverter circuit after the power inverter circuit is started, and for compensating for variations in cookware materials.

An appliance system is provided having a plurality of appliances. A master controller includes the user-operable appliance controls as well as associated logic controls for controlling the operating components of the appliances. An interface control is physically associated with each controlled appliance and receives control signals for the various operating components from the master controller by way of power line transmission. The master controller effects a repeating sequence of transmitting and receiving control signals in the form of first and second data packages while the interface control effects a repeating sequence of receiving first data packages and transmitting second data packages. The interface control and the master controller will each interrupt operation of the appliances responsive to the absence of either first or second data packages.
