A dried blood-spotting device includes a carrier card having a window therethrough along with a punchable glass fiber paper disposed in the window for a uniform absorption of a blood droplet sample into a homogeneous circular sport. The glass fiber paper is configured for enabling improved analysis for small molecules by liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry of punched specimens of the sample absorbed glass fiber paper.

An apparatus for punching and extracting analytes from a dried biological fluid spot includes a tube and a sorbent bed. The tube includes a proximal tube opening, a distal tube opening, and a distal section. The distal section includes a tube wall having a tapered diameter that reduces down to the distal tube opening. The apparatus may also include a tube extension that includes an extension wall having a tapered diameter that reduces from a proximal extension opening to a distal extension opening. The tube extension is movable between an attached position and a detached position. At the attached position, the tube extension is secured to the tube by frictional contact between the extension wall and the tube at the distal tube opening. At the detached position the tube extension is physically separate from the tube. The sorbent bed is disposed at an axial distance from the distal tube opening and in the tube or the tube extension. The sorbent bed has a composition configured for solid phase extraction.

Apparatus for punching and solid phase extraction of dried biological fluid spot and related methods

Polyamide sample preparation tubes with a hollow polyamide tube and an extraction medium contained within the tube are utilized in the sample preparation devices. The sample preparation tubes are substantially inert and show little tendency to dissolve or leach contaminants into nonaqueous liquids. The polyamide tubes may be used in preparing samples for analytical procedures such as GC, GC/MS, LC or LC/MS.

A dried biological fluid spot punch device includes a tube, a frit, and a filter disposed on the frit. The tube includes a main section and a distal section adjoining the main section. The main section includes a proximal tube end circumscribing a proximal tube opening, and the distal section includes a distal tube end circumscribing a distal tube opening. The distal section further includes a distal tube having a tapered inside diameter that reduces from the main section to the distal tube opening. The frit is disposed in the distal section at a distance from the distal tube opening and fixed in position by frictional contact with the distal tube wall. The punch device may also include a punching tool. The punching tool may include a body engaging the tube at the proximal tube end and an ejection mechanism configured for disengaging the body from the tube.

Dried biological fluid spot punch device and related methods

Solid phase extraction devices for sample preparation are disclosed, comprising a hollow conical tube having one narrower opening and one broader opening, wherein the narrower opening of the tube contains a solid phase extraction material comprising a functionalized monolithic sorbent, and wherein the solid phase extraction device is prepared by a combination of reduced pressure, positive pressure and mechanical compaction. The solid phase extraction devices are adapted for preparation of small sample volumes, and provide excellent recovery of analytes and good flow characteristics. Methods for preparing and using the solid phase extraction devices are disclosed.

An underwater breathing apparatus well suited for beginning snorkelers, having a mouthpiece, a floating air pickup, and a flexible breathing tube connecting the two. The mouthpiece has a one-way inlet valve and a one-way outlet valve. Air flow is thus rendered unidirectional. Air flows in from the pickup, through the breathing tube, and then to the mouthpiece. The inlet valve prevents the breathing tube from collecting water. The outlet valve discharges spent air and collected water to the exterior. Air thus expelled simulates scuba breathing. The flexible breathing tube enables a novice to enjoy snorkeling without being obliged to hold a rigid breathing tube upright. The floating air pickup has angled, swiveling connection to the breathing tube, thus rendering the float more stable. In alternative embodiments, the breathing supply is manifolded to supply more than one user. In further alternative embodiments, the apparatus includes a hook or eyelet for retaining small personal articles on the float, and includes indicators for observers above the water level to monitor correct breathing procedure. The float is brightly colored to enable an observer to locate the apparatus at a distance.
