A method of analyzing characteristics of a subterranean formation includes applying a wavelet transform to measured data or to derived data obtained from the measured data, the measured data obtained by measuring a physical property at each of a plurality of positions in a borehole that penetrates the subterranean formation; selecting one or more scales for analyzing wavelet coefficients; performing a segmentation of the data; calculating a distribution of wavelet coefficients for each scale, for one or more spatial directions of wavelet transform application, for the wavelet transform of the data and for each segment that belongs to the portion on which the wavelet transform has been calculated; and for each segment, analyzing a distribution of the data and the distribution of the wavelet coefficients for each scale in terms of their overlap with corresponding distributions of training samples to produce a geological interpretation of the subterranean formation.

Lithofacies classification system and method

A method of analyzing characteristics of a subterranean formation includes transmitting a signal at least partially into a material of the subterranean formation such that the signal is transformed in a manner indicative of a characteristic of the material, receiving the transformed signal from the material, converting the transformed signal into image data indicative of the characteristic of the material, applying a first set of machine executable rules to the image data to produce segmented image data, wherein portions of the image that are sufficiently related according to the applied rules are grouped into segments, and analyzing, according to a second set of machine executable rules, the segmented image data to produce a geological profile of the subterranean formation.

Automated borehole image interpretation

A method for creating a stratigraphic model is provided. A core is obtained from a wellbore and a detailed graphic core description is created. Wireline data, including a borehole image, is obtained for a cored interval corresponding to the core and processed into an interpretable borehole image. The core description is compared with the interpretable borehole image to create a catalogue of geologic image facies. The borehole image from the entire interval of interest is compared to the catalogue to create a preliminary pseudocore description. The interpretable borehole image is interactively examined and compared with the preliminary pseudocore description to create a master pseudocore interpretation. A second master pseudocore is developed for a second wellbore. A stratigraphic model, and subsequently a reservoir model, may then be created by correlating between the master pseudocores of the first and second wellbores.

Method for creating a stratigraphic model using pseudocores created from borehole images

In accordance with the present invention, rotation of the inner barrel relative of the axis of symmetry of the core barrel (indicative of core twist off or core sand erosion during coring operations) is detected by a novel sensor combination. The sensor includes a reed switch mechanically imbedded in a support sleeve of a custom safety sub attached to the outer core barrel and electrically actuated by an adjacently positioned signature magnet fitted to the inner barrel to connect a power source uphole from the core barrels with a driver valve of a mud pulser system. During coring, circumferential passage of the reed switch adjacent to the signature magnet (during rotation of the outer core barrel to generate a core), allows the power source to periodically activate the valve driver to produce a series of mud pulses of constant repetition rate. But with the occurrence of rotation of the inner core barrel irregular repetition rates are produced at uphole indicating equipment. Result: sticking and jamming of the core can be immediately detected and uphole parameters modified to ease unsafe conditions.

Means and method for facilitating measurements while coring

In accordance with the present invention, rotation of the inner barrel relative of the axis of symmetry of the core barrel (indicative of core twist off or core sand erosion during coring operations) is detected by a novel sensor combination comprising a battery-powered Hall-effect device fitted to the inner barrel imbedded in a support sleeve of a custom safety sub attached to the outer core barrel adjacent to a single signature magnet. During coring, circumferential passage of the Hall-effect device adjacent to the signature magnet (during rotation of the outer core barrel to generate a core), produces a series of signals of constant repetition rate. But with the occurrence of rotation of the inner core barrel irregular repetition intervals are produced at uphole indicating equipment connected to the Hall-effect device through conventional downhole telemetering and power generating equipment. Result: sticking and jamming of the core can be immediately detected and uphole parameters modified to ease unsafe conditions. Use of a battery pack to power the Hall-effect device, simplifies operations, especially where the present invention is used in conjunction with the MWC mud pulse telemetering equipment.

In accordance with the present invention, rotation of the inner barrel relative of the axis of symmetry of the core barrel (indicative of core twist-off or core sand erosion during coring operations) is detected by a novel sensor combination comprising a Hall-effect device imbedded in a support sleeve of a custom safety sub attached to the outer core barrel adjacent to a single signature magnet fitted to and carried by a special support ring attached to the inner barrel. In releasably attaching the inner and outer core barrels together, the special support ring is made to be locking through operation of a series of compression strings acting between the lower surface of the ring and the inner core barrel as to wedge the upper surface of the support ring against an annular stopper ring. Result: the inner core barrel does not rotate relative to the outer core barrel during the trip down to the bottom of the well bore. Before coring commences, the Hall-effect device can be pretested since the signature magnet is locked in circumferential side-by-side relationship with and hence detectable by the Hall-effect device. Increases in mud pressure at the core site, causes release of the support ring (and the magnet) relative to the outer core barrel.
