A process for manufacturing high purity anhydrous hydrogen fluoride (HF) having low levels of oxidizable impurities by electrolytically oxidizing the impurities. Specifically, trivalent arsenic impurity in the anhydrous hydrogen fluoride is oxidized to a non-volatile pentavalent arsenic compound. The resultant mixture is distilled to recover high purity anhydrous hydrogen fluoride with low levels of arsenic impurity.

A process for preparing hydrogen fluoride involving treating anhydrous hydrogen fluoride containing primarily trivalent arsenic impurities with an effective amount of chromium (VI) oxide (i.e., CrO.sub.3) and oxygen such as to oxidize substantially all of the trivalent arsenic to pentavalent arsenic (i.e., As.sup.+3 .fwdarw.As.sup.+5) followed by separation and recovery (e.g., by distillation) of purified anhydrous hydrogen fluoride.

A method for the recovery of geothermal energy from subterranean formations comprising injecting a thermally stable, non-corrosive, non-aqueous fluid into said formation to absorb heat; recovering the heated fluid from the formation; and, recovering heat energy from the heated fluid.

This purification process has been developed for liquid polymer feed streams having one or more impurities present at levels of 2% or less by weight of the stream. This purification process comprises: (a) forcing the liquid polymer feed stream through a spray nozzle into an inert atmosphere at a temperature of from about 68.degree. F. to about 392.degree. F. where the pressure is at or below 1 atmosphere in such a manner to atomize the feed stream into particulate drops having a size in the range of from about 1,000 microns to about 50 microns in diameter, (b) retaining particulate drops under the conditions of (a) and at a temperature in the range of from about 68.degree. F. to about 392.degree. F. for at least 0.10 seconds to form impurity vapors, (c) removing the vaporous impurities that form during step (b), and (d) collecting the purified atomized feed stream liquid wherein the purified feed stream has a vapor pressure no higher than 1.times.10.sup.-3 (mm) of mercury (Hg) at 68.degree. F. and no higher than 50 mm of Hg at 392.degree. F., and the impurities removed in step (c) have vapor pressures no lower than 10 mm Hg at 68.degree. F., and no lower than 5,000 mm of Hg at 392.degree. F.

Alumina fibers are prepared by a method comprising (a) forming aluminum methoxide from aluminum alkoxides using methanol; (b) recovering aluminum methoxide as a solid precipitate phase, washing to remove higher alcohols and drying to recover a powder; (c) reacting the recovered powdered aluminum methoxide with dilute hydrochloric acid to form aluminum chlorohydrate; then (d) concentrating the aluminum chlorohydrate solution under vacuum to desired viscosity.

Barium catalyst is removed from ethoxylated alcohols prepared using these catalysts by admixing the ethoxylated alcohols with water and mineral acid to precipitate the barium catalyst as a solid then centrifuging to remove the precipitate.

An improvement in the method of preparing alumina by water hydrolysis of aluminum alkoxides is disclosed. Briefly, the improvement comprising admixing the water and aluminum alkoxide under high velocity conditions prior to passing the resulting admixture to the reactor. The improved process results in a product having improved physical properties, particularly pore volume and bulk density.

Alumina having a surface area from about 250 to about 500 m.sup.2 /g, a loose bulk density from about 10 to about 30 lbs/ft.sup.3, a pore volume (0-10,000 A) from about 0.6 to about 2.5 cc/g and a pore volume (0-1,000 A) of at least 0.6 cc/g wherein 70 to 95 percent of said pore volume (0-1,000 A) consists of pores having a diameter in the range of 35 to 80 A and a method for producing such alumina by the water hydrolysis of aluminum methoxide.

A high-porosity, high-surface area, low-density alumina and a method for preparing said alumina. The alumina typically has a surface area from about 260 to about 400 m.sup.2 /g, a pore volume from about 1.0 to about 2.75 cc/g, a loose bulk density from about 7.5 to about 25 lb/ft.sup.3, and is produced by contacting aqueous alumina slurries with an effective amount of an organic solvent and drying the resulting solvent-aqueous alumina mixture.

High-porosity, high-surface area, low-bulk density alumina

Alumina having improved color characteristics and improved extrusion properties is produced by an improvement in the process for producing low-density, high-porosity, high-surface area alumina from an aqueous alumina slurry by contacting said aqueous alumina slurry with an effective amount of an organic solvent to form a solvent-aqueous alumina mixture; drying said mixture and recovering said low-density, high-porosity, high-surface area alumina, comprising drying said solvent-aqueous alumina mixture in an inert atmosphere.

A method for producing concentrated alumina slurries containing from about 14 to about 20 weight percent Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 by forming a solvent-aqueous alumina mixture and evaporating solent-aqueous vapor from said mixture to produce said concentrated alumina slurries.

An improvement in a method for producing alpha alumina monohydrate extrudates by mixing acid, water, and alpha alumina monohydrate to form an extrudable mixture; extruding the mixture to produce green alpha alumina monohydrate extrudates and drying the green extrudates, wherein the improvement comprises, contacting the green extrudates with an aqueous solution of catalytic metals in an amount sufficient to impregnate the extrudates with the catalytic metals thus improving the extrudate properties and impregnating the extrudates with catalytic metals.
