The present invention relates to a curable composition comprising an ethylenically unsaturated compound and a specific photoinitiator having dual initiation mechanisms. The invention also relates to a process for the preparation of a cured product, in particular a 3D-printed article, with this composition and to the use of this composition for obtaining an ink, a coating, a sealant, an adhesive, a molded article or a 3D-printed article. The invention further pertains to the use of a specific phosphine oxide photoinitiator in a 3D printing composition or 3D printing process.

Curable composition comprising a photoinitiator

Composite materials are formed by photo curing compositions containing one or more cyanoacrylates, substantial amounts of one or more fillers (in particular, opaque and/or fibrous fillers such as carbon fibers) as well as particular photoinitiator systems. The photoinitiator system may comprise, for example, a metallocene compound such as a ferrocene in combination with an acylgermane or other photocleavable compound which generates an acyl radical when exposed to light. Complete, deep curing of such compositions to provide composite materials having improved mechanical properties can be achieved, even though the light used to initiate curing may not be capable of penetrating the entire thickness of the composition due to the presence of the filler.

Light-curable compositions useful for forming composite materials

Compounds useful for formulating inks, 3D printing resins, molding resins, coatings, sealants and adhesives which exhibit reduced shrinkage stress and high hardness and stiffness when cured are described which include a single free radical-polymerizable functional group, one or more urethane and/or ureido linkages and one or more cyclic structural elements per molecule.

Heterocyclic-functional resins, such as epoxides, oxetanes, cyclic carbonates, lactides and lactones, are used in radiation-curable formulations along with ethylenically unsaturated materials such as (meth)acrylates to achieve improved mechanical properties and/or lower shrinkage in the cured compositions prepared therefrom as compared to formulations containing the ethylenically unsaturated materials but no heterocyclic-functional resin. Polymerizable, ethylenically unsaturated metal complexes, such as Zn and Ca carboxylates prepared using unsaturated carboxylic acids or anhydrides, may be employed to effect thermal cure of the heterocyclic-functional resin component of such formulations, which are particularly useful in the production of 3D-printed articles and the like.

Curable compositions

Curable compositions having desirable attributes such as rapid curing rates and enhanced physical properties are prepared using admixtures of one or more (meth)acrylate-functionalized compounds and one or more reactive comonomers, such as 1,1-diester-1-alkenes (e.g., methylene malonates), 1,1-diketo-1-alkenes, 1-ester-1-keto-1-alkenes and/or icatonates.

Curable compositions and uses thereof

Useful articles, such as coatings, adhesives, printed graphics, 3D printed articles and molded articles are prepared by curing compositions containing one or more salts of ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids comprising six or more carbon atoms, one or more multifunctional (meth)acrylate oligomers and one or more mono(meth)acrylate esters of alcohols which, when polymerized as homopolymers, have glass transition temperatures of at least 50&#xb0; C.

Curable compositions include: a) at least one (meth)acrylate monomer or oligomer and b) at least one mono-functional (meth)acrylate monomer comprising a polycyclic moiety having at least three rings that are fused or condensed. The compositions may comprise an initiator system to render the compositions as curable. The compositions may comprise both the a) and b) components in an amount from about 30% to about 70% by weight. The compositions described herein are advantageous with respect to properties such as viscosity, toughness, tensile strength and tensile elongation. Due to their advantageous properties, the compositions are viable for a wide range of applications including coatings, adhesives, sealants, inks and stereolithography. The compositions are liquid at ambient temperature and impart a high glass transition temperature, Tg, without sacrificing other properties, such as elongation. The compositions are useful in 3D printing.

Curable compositions comprising mono-functional acrylates

Embodiments described herein are directed to polymerization-induced phase-separating (PIPS) compositions for enhancement of impact resistance and rheological properties in photocurable resins for 3D printing, such as for inks, coatings and adhesives. Embodiments described herein are advantageous with respect to properties such as impact resistance, shear adhesion and cohesive strength. The PIPS compositions may include components X, Y and Z, wherein X includes an acrylic based monomer; Y includes a copolymer of block A and block B; and Z includes a multifunctional cross-linker. Methods of using the PIPS compositions are also described. Also described are methods of screening potential acrylic based monomeric or oligomeric additives that yield improved impact resistance.
