The ferromagnetic core of a transformer in a switching regulator power supply is configured to improve the efficiency of the supply. Since the switching times and their resultant losses occupy a greater percentage of the energy-storage energy-transfer cycle as the operating frequency increases, efficiency is increased by narrowing the operating frequency range. There is provided a transformer core which allows the inductances in the transformer windings to vary during each energy-storage and energy-transfer half cycle. The initial inductance can be chosen such that a predetermined time interval is added to each half cycle regardless of output load to thereby decrease the operating frequency range.

Modified power transformer for self-oscillating converter regulator

A multiple output switching regulator power supply operates as a self-oscillating circuit with a light weight ferrite core transformer and a sense winding used exclusively for voltage regulation purposes. A power transistor switch is employed to selectively connect the transformer primary across a DC source of power to provide energy storage when the switch is closed and to provide energy transfer when the switch is open, by way of transformer flyback. The power transistor switch is controlled by a feedback circuit which includes a current sink connected to selectively divert current away from the base of the power transistor switch and a timing circuit for controlling the operation of the current sink. A capacitor, connected across the sense winding is monitored by a high gain voltage comparison circuit which activates the timing circuit in dependence on the voltage variation on the capacitor.

Multiple output self oscillating converter regulator power supply

In a long line data acquisition system, an input network is provided for coupling the lines to a data acquisition unit. The network includes the cascade combination of a first filter presenting a low pass frequency response to common mode voltage and a second filter presenting a low pass frequency response to difference mode voltage. The output of the second filter is coupled to an amplifier having high common mode rejection. The network substantially reduces, at the amplifier input, both common mode and difference mode noise picked up by the lines.
