A thermoplastic composition, such as PET, contains an inert iron compound such as FeP, FeSi, or combinations thereof, having no chemical activity in the PET, with or without certain quantities of elemental metals, such as antimony, and a reducing agent or other stabilizer such as phosphite or phosphoric acid. A method for forming this composition is also disclosed. The composition may also optionally contain a color stabilizer, a DEG inhibitor and stress crack inhibiting agents.

A polyester resin is disclosed containing graphite in sufficient quantities to reduce its infrared heat up time in the reheat-blow process. The amount of graphite added is from 0.1 to 15 ppm and the average particle size is from 0.1 to 20 microns. The polyester is useful to make bottle preforms for beverage containers. Methods of making the polyester resin are also disclosed using a masterbatch or liquid slurry addition technique.

It is desirable to increase the modulus of rubbers utilized in a wide variety of applications. This invention discloses a technique for preparing high modulus rubber compositions. By utilizing this technique, high modulus can be attained without sacrificing other properties, such as hysteresis. The subject invention more specifically relates to a process for preparing a high modulus rubber composition which comprises: (1) polymerizing at least one diisocyanate with at least one member selected from the group consisting of diols and diamines in a polymer cement of a rubbery elastomer under conditions which result in the formation of a rubber cement having the crystalline polymer dispersed therein; and (2) recovering the high modulus rubber composition from the rubber cement.

Reinforced elastomeric articles, such as tires, wherein the reinforcement is reticulated bacterial cellulose are provided. Reticulated bacterial cellulose has an average diameter of about 0.1 micron and a substantially infinite aspect ratio. The reinforced article comprises about 2 phr to 10 phr of the cellulose reinforcement.

It is desirable to increase the modulus of rubbers utilized in a wide variety of applications. For example, it is typically desirable to increase the modulus of rubber compounds which are utilized in tire tread base compositions and in tire wire coat compounds. Unfortunately, most conventional techniques for increasing the modulus of a rubber compound are detrimental to other rubber properties, such as hysteresis and cut growth resistance. By utilizing the techniques of this invention rubber compounds can be prepared which exhibit high tensile strength, high modulus, and good cut growth resistance. The subject invention specifically relates to a process for preparing a highly dispersed blend of a polyester in an elastomer which comprises (1) blending a solution of a rubber in an organic solvent with a solution of a polyester in an organic solvent to produce a dispersion containing said rubber and said polyester, and (2) recovering the highly dispersed blend from the dispersion. This process can be used to increase the modulus of virtually any type of rubber including cis-1,4-polybutadiene, styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) polyisoprene, isoprene-butadiene rubber, isoprene-butadiene-styrene rubber (SIBR), nitrile rubber, and the like.

A method of preparing a fiber reinforced elastomer by forming fibers therein in-situ and an elastomer made thereby are provided. In the method, a fiber forming material, preferably a high performance polymer, is dissolved in a compatible solvent to form a solvent/polymer mixture, and the mixture is added to the elastomer during compounding or mixing. The polymer is quickly dispersed into the elastomer, and the solvent rapidly evaporates. The shear of the mixer causes elongation of the polymer into fibers. The fibers may also be oriented by the shear of the mixer.

It has been determined that the mechanical and thermal properties of polyesters can be improved by incorporating hydroxyalkyl trimellitic imides therein. Such polyesters are comprised of repeat units which are derived from (a) at least one diacid component, (b) at least one diol component, and (c) at least one hydroxyalkyl trimellitic imide.

Solution or lacquer adhesives are utilized in a wide variety of applications. Such adhesives are particularly useful because they can be easily applied to a substrate. This invention relates to a copolyester which is particularly useful as an adhesive which is comprised of repeat units which are derived from (a) diacid component which is comprised of (1) from 0 to 60 mole percent terephthalic acid and (2) from 40 to 100 mole percent of at least one aliphatic dicarboxylic acid containing from 4 to 12 carbon atoms; (b) a diol component which is comprised of (1) from 0 to 75 mole percent neopentyl glycol and (2) from 25 to 100 mole percent ethylene glycol; and (c) hydroxymethyl benzoic acid.

The labor costs associated with manufacturing wooden articles often represent a substantial portion of the total cost of producing the wooden article. This invention discloses a polymeric composition which can be easily molded into articles which have physical properties which are very similar to those of wood. By utilizing the polymeric composition and techniques of this invention, it is possible to manufacture a wide variety of wood-like articles by molding at reduced costs. This invention specifically reveals a polymeric composition which can be molded into articles having wood-like physical properties which is comprised of (1) from about 80 to about 99 weight percent polyethylene terephthalate, (2) from about 1 to about 20 weight percent of a polycarbonate, and (3) from about 0.3 to about 2 weight percent of 5-phenyltetrazole. These polymeric compositions can be prepared utilizing scrap polyethylene terephthalate, such as recycled polyethylene terephthalate beverage bottles.

Wood-like polymeric composition

Polyethylene naphthalate is a polyester resin that is highly useful in numerous applications. For instance, polyethylene naphthalate can be molded into a wide variety of products which have outstanding properties. However, polyethylene naphthalate does not crystallize rapidly at temperatures which are normally used in molding operations. This invention discloses a modified polyethylene naphthalate which crystallizes rapidly at much lower temperatures than does polyethylene naphthalate homopolymer. The modified polyethylene naphthalates of this invention contain a small amount of polyether glycol. This invention more specifically relates to a polyester comprised of repeat units which are derived from (a) a naphthalate dicarboxylic acid and (b) a diol component which is comprised of (1) at least one glycol containing from 2 to 12 carbon atoms and (2) from about 1 to about 12 weight percent of at least one polyether glycol based upon the total weight of the polymer.
