A roller cone drill bit having a bit body with at least one support arm extending from the bit body. Each support arm may have an associated spindle extending inwardly. A respective cone assembly may be rotatably disposed on each spindle. At least one diverter plug may be disposed in a hole formed in each support arm. A void space may be formed between one end of each diverter plug and the bottom of the associated hole. At least one fluid flow passageway may extend from the surface of the associated support arm to the void space to allow communication of fluid containing debris with the void space. Rotating action of the roller cone drill bit and associated cone assemblies may force packing of debris into the void space which results in biasing the diverter plug outwardly from the associated hole to contact adjacent portions of the associated cone assembly.

Roller cone drill bit with debris diverter plugs

A roller cone drill bit having a bit body with at least one support arm extending therefrom. Each support arm may have an interior surface and an exterior surface with an associated spindle extending inwardly from the interior surface. A respective cone assembly may be rotatably disposed on each spindle. A gap may be formed between interior portions of each cone assembly and exterior portions of the associated spindle with a fluid seal disposed in the gap to block fluid flow therethrough. Each cone assembly may include a generally circular backface disposed adjacent to the interior surface of the associated support arm. At least one fluid passageway may extend through each support arm to allow communication of fluid from the interior surface to an exterior surface of the support arm. A debris diverter insert having a generally hollow bore may be disposed within each fluid passageway.

Roller cone drill bit with debris flow paths through associated support arms

A plastic canister for storing and shipping drill bits, especially roller cone drill bit, has a pin-holder built into the lid of the canister for ease of field dressing the bit. The lid and body of the container are slip fit to one another and indexed to each other for positive positioning in their relationship. Safety features include the use of a conductive plastic polymer, a non-rolling base, mating protrusions and recesses for stacking, recessed areas for strapping, and welded loop handles.

Drill bit packages and methods

A rotary cone drill bit for forming a borehole having a bit body with an upper portion adapted for connection to a drill string. A number of support arms extending from the bit body with each support arm having an exterior surface with an opening extending therethrough. A number of cutter cone assemblies equal to the number of support arms with each cutter cone assembly rotatably mounted on a respective spindle projecting generally downwardly and inwardly from each support arm. A ball retainer passageway extending from the opening in the exterior surface of each support arm to allow installing ball bearings through the opening and the ball retainer passageway to rotatably mount each cutter cone assembly on its respective spindle. A ball race formed in the exterior of each spindle between a first outside diameter portion and a second outside diameter portion. The ball retainer passageway intersecting the ball race. The first outside diameter portion and the second outside diameter portion providing portions of radial baring for rotatably mounting each cutter cone assembly on its respective spindle. The first outside diameter portion and the second outside diameter portion having approximately the same diameter relative to an axis extending through the spindle.

Rotary cone drill bit with improved bearing system

A bit breaker is formed of a U-shaped base and latchable gate which closes the U. When the gate is in a closed position, evenly spaced chocks on both the base and gate protrude into the central cavity of the bit breaker to engage slots formed in the bit. The bit breaker is designed to be used with either roller cone bits or drag bits.
