Via communications with an association management resource, an operator of a respective fluid delivery system can associate a medical device (fluid pump) with a particular entity such as a patient, location, one or more other medical devices, the caregiver, etc. Thereafter, the operator of the fluid delivery system is able to better manage use of the fluid delivery system based on relevant medical information, which is accessible as a result of creating the association. For example, the association management resource gathers and stores information associated with the entity prior to the operator providing the input associating the fluid delivery system with the entity. After the operator of the fluid delivery system creates the association, the medical information associated with the entity is immediately available to the fluid delivery system and/or corresponding operator of the fluid delivery system.

Medical device management using associations

An infusion management system includes an infusion management server configured for providing an order to an infusion device to administer an infusion and the infusion device. The infusion device may be configured for receiving the order, associating the order with a patient, and adjusting at least one setting according to the order. A method for administering an infusion, an interface for an infusion device and a computer program product are also disclosed.

Fluid delivery management in a fluid delivery network

A configuration management resource keeps track of incremental updates to a locally stored copy of configuration information (such as drug library information) used by a medical device to administer treatment to patients. The medical device retrieves a copy of the configuration information from a configuration management resource. Unbeknownst to a user of the medical device, to ensure that the medical device has most up-to-date configuration information, the medical device communicates a request for updates to the configuration management resource. To service the received request for updated configuration information, the configuration management resource forwards incrementally available configuration update information to the requesting medical device. The medical device uses the received configuration update information from the configuration management resource to update its local version of configuration information stored in the medical device.

Medical devices and configuration update management

A healthcare enterprise has an associated management resource that manages operation of one or more medical devices in the healthcare enterprise. To determine what functionality to enable in a respective medical device, the respective medical device establishes a communication link to communicate in a network environment. Subsequent to establishing the communication link, the medical device initiates communications over the communication link from the medical device to the remotely located management resource. The communications include a unique identifier value assigned to the medical device. Depending upon feedback (such as granting or denial of authorization) from the management resource with respect to the unique identifier value, the medical device operates in one of multiple different operational modes such as a fully functional mode or a reduced functionality mode.

A fluid flow manager executing on first hardware controls a flow of fluid outputted from a fluid delivery pump to a recipient. A monitor resource, executing on second hardware operating independently of the first hardware, monitors for an occurrence of a failure condition associated with the delivery of fluid. In response to detecting occurrence of a failure condition associated with delivery of the fluid, the monitor resource generates a control output. The control output can be used to perform operations such as discontinue delivery of the fluid, notify a respective caregiver of the delivery failure, etc.

A universal medical device driver adapter that enables the creation of medical device drivers without the need to write custom software for typical medical devices, thereby reducing development time for individual drivers and reducing training time and skill sets requirements of driver developers. Various format parameters are defined, such as baud rate, parity, buffer size, time stamps, tokens, message link, and the like, in an XML device driver file. When a recognized medical device is specified, the corresponding XML file is retrieved and an interface uses the parameters described therein for bidirectional communication with the monitor.
