A leg model, designed to teach endoscopic saphenous vein harvesting, is provided that accurately models the anatomy of the saphenous vein in the human thigh, and closely approximates the subcutaneous tissues in a human. The subcutaneous tissue is formulated and manufactured such that the saphenous vein adheres to the subcutaneous tissue to simulate the adhesion in a human leg. The model includes a reusable base and a replaceable single use insert. The base is size and configured to receive the insert. The tray can include a slit located at a point along its length that permits the ends of the tray to rotate about the slit so that the ends can be bent with respect to one another.

Training model for endoscopic vessel harvesting

A surgical suture loop combination and a method of using the combination. The combination has a suture and a surgical needle. The ends of the suture are mounted to the surgical needle to form a suture loop. A pledget member is mounted to the suture loop. A replacement heart valve is mounted to a cardiac valve annulus using the suture loop combinations and surgical procedures of the present invention.

Surgical method for affixing a valve to a heart using a looped suture combination

A method of manufacturing blunt tip surgical needles. Taper point needles having conventional piercing tips are placed into a vessel containing a grinding media. The needles are maintained in the vessel for a sufficient amount of time to convert the piercing point into a blunt. Additionally, the needles may be separated from the grinding media using a rotating magnetic drum such that the needles remain engaged with the magnetic drum while the grinding media is directed away to a collection tray. Needles are later removed from the magnetic drum.

Method of manufacturing surgical needles having blunt tips

A needle for endoscopic surgery is curved into an arc of more than 180.degree. and twisted, so that it forms a part of a spiral, with a lateral offset between the needle point and barrel. The needle is sized to fit through a 10 mm trocar and is also blackened, to improve its visibility in a bloody field. The needle curvature is preferably not constant over its entire length, so that different sections have different radii of curvature. The needle is particularly well adapted for performing laporascopically a procedure (Burch Colposuspension) that is used to treat female stress incontinence.

Spiral needle for endoscopic surgery

An endoscopic instrument assembly for fastening bodily tissue is disclosed. The assembly includes a surgical instrument for insertion into and withdrawal from the passageway of a cannula. The instrument has a tube with a neckdown region between the proximal and distal ends of the tube. The proximal and distal ends of the tube have a diameter greater than the neckdown region. When the instrument is inserted into the passageway of the cannula, the radial clearance at the neckdown region of the tube is greater than the clearance at the tube distal end. The instrument includes a suture filament for fastening the tissue, and a needle attached to the distal end of the filament. When the instrument is inserted through the cannula, the filament has a length where the needle lies adjacent the neckdown region of the tube and is contained within the greater radial clearance offered by the neckdown region. Consequently, the drag force observed during insertion of the instrument through the cannula because of frictional contact between the needle and the inner wall of the cannula is significantly lessened or avoided altogether. This reduction in drag force can be accomplished without sacrificing other important design features of the surgical instrument.

Endoscopic instrument assembly for fastening tissue

A continuous process for heat treating and cleaning and tempering martensitic stainless steel surgical needles is disclosed. The method comprises exposing the surgical needles to a partial vacuum at a temperature less than the heat treating temperature to remove volatile surface contaminant. Then the needles are heat treated in an argon gas environment at a pressure equal to or greater than 1.0 Torr. Next the temperature of the oven is lowered to temper the needles.

Process for heat treating and tempering surgical needles

A cutting edge surgical suture needle. The suture needle is an elongated member having a proximal suture mounting end and a distal piercing tip. The distal section of the needle has a cross-section having a top side with opposed edges. The cross-section also has opposed curved concave lateral sides having top edges and bottom edges. The top edges of the concave sides and the opposed sides of the top side are coextensive and form cutting edges. The bottom edges of the opposed concave sides are coextensive and form a bottom cutting edge.

A method of heat treating and cleaning maraging or precipitation hardening stainless steel surgical needles is disclosed. The method comprises exposing the surgical needles to a partial vacuum at a temperature less than the aging temperature to remove volatile surface contaminants. Then the needles are heat treated in an argon gas environment at a pressure equal to or greater than 1.0 atmosphere.

Process for the heat treatment of surgical needles by aging

A process for progressively manufacturing cutting edge needles or wire members. Needle blanks or wire blanks are cut from a roll of wire and mounted to a carrier strip. The carrier strip and needles are moved through a succession of coining dies and at least one trimming die, wherein the first coining die is an open coining die and the one or more successive coining dies are closed coining dies. The needle blanks or wire members are optionally curved, heat treated and electrochemically treated resulting in cutting edge needles or wire members formed without a grinding step and without adversely affecting point ductility.

Process for manufacturing surgical needles

A non-magnetic surgical needle. The needle is made from Type 316 stainless steel or ERSTE 4456CA stainless steel and is work hardened to have mechanical properties substantially equivalent to a surgical needle made from conventional magnetic stainless steel. The needle is useful in the magnetic field of a magnetic resonance imaging diagnostic apparatus.

Non-magnetic stainless steel surgical needle

A blunt tip surgical needle which significantly reduces the probability of skin penetration of the gloved hand of an operator is disclosed. The blunt tip needle includes a tip portion having at least one flat surface. The flat surface(s) blends smoothly between each other and with the outer surface of the tip portion such that the entire tip portion has a continuously smooth outer surface lacking any discontinuities or sharp edges.

An endoscopic suture punch for use in endosurgical procedures, especially an anti-reflux procedure. This suture punch has an elongate frame and a handle mounted to one end of the frame. A pair of opposed jaws having tissue punches is mounted to the other end of the frame. One jaw is rigidly mounted to the frame while the other jaw is movably mounted to the frame, although both jaws can be movably mounted. An actuation handle is mounted to the frame for actuating the jaws. The suture punch has a suture pathway through the frame, the punches and the jaws for receiving the suture. There is a suture drive mechanism mounted to the frame for moving the suture through the suture pathway. The endoscopic suture punch is used with an invaginator for performing an anti-reflux procedure. The endoscopic suture punch may typically be used for suturing and other endoscopic procedures.

A suture needle holder is described with a ratcheting mechanism and a optimized set of jaws. These jaws have nitinol inserts for deformability around a suture needle. The shaft of the endoscopic suture needle holder is rotatable to allow placement of the jaws. Also, operation may take place along only one axis, by making the handles parallel to the shaft axis and the jaws which grip the suture needle.
