The present invention relates to an improved ball tossing device that is portable and adjustable to accommodate a variety of different balls and lobbing preferences. This may be achieved through various features including some or all of the following: a ball feeding mechanism using a rotating disk with an offset feed channel to deliver balls to the ball tossing queue; a catapult arm that uses a motor/spring mechanism to toss balls in the queue out of the machine; an indexer feature for isolating the ball to be tossed from the other balls in the queue; and adjustable features that allow users to vary ball trajectory of the ball being tossed.

Ball tossing machine

A device and method for interactive tennis practice to improve a player's skills and sense and record the player's performance. One of a number of predetermined practice drill patterns are selected, a ball machine is controlled to project tennis balls onto a tennis court in the selected practice drill pattern, and the points of impact of the tennis balls after they have been struck by a player are sensed and displayed on a video screen. The player may select one of several predetermined target areas on the court for display on the video screen, and the sensed points of impact may be recorded for later retrieval. The ball machine may project tennis balls in timed response to the sensing of the impacts of balls struck by the player. Game play may be simulated by selecting one of a number of predetermined target areas on the tennis court, projecting a tennis ball to be struck by the player onto the court, sensing the impact of the tennis ball in the target area after it has been struck, controlling the ball machine to project another ball in timed response to the sensed impact, and projecting another ball each time an impact in the target area is sensed.

Method and apparatus for interactive tennis practice

An electro-optical IFF system easily integrable into existing laser systems uses a laser to illuminate a potential target platform. The potential target, if friendly, has apparatus for returning to the illuminating platform a return beam which has the same signature but is delayed with respect to the illuminating beam by a predetermined time interval. If the illuminating platform sees a return beam with the same signature in the proper time frame, an indication is generated that the target is friendly. A friendly target platform contains apparatus for comparing the signature of the illuminating beam to a stored reference signature, and for providing a friendly-illumination indication and activating the return beam only if the signatures match.

Electro-optical IFF system

A laser targeting system comprises an airborne reconnaissance platform (1) disposed to conduct surveillance of enemy air, ground, and/or sea targets (5). The surveillance means (11) can be some combination of FLIR, laser, or radar devices. Platform (1) may be manned or may be a remote pilotless vehicle commanded by a ground control station (9). Several friendly units (2) are capable of firing weapons at the enemy targets (5). The friendly units (2) desire real-time targeting information, such as video images, range, and coordinates. The friendly units (2) typically desire information for only certain types of targets (5) or for those within proximate geographical areas. These selective requests are sent via a laser uplink (28) to platform (1), which determines the direction from which the request came by a direction determining means (17), and selectively processes the request by means of a decoder/controller (16).

Laser targeting system

A coil (21) mounted inside a spinning guided object (20) has an electrical current (i) induced therewithin by means of interaction with the earth's magnetic field (B). A similar coil (22) mounted on the launch platform spins at the same rate (W) as the object's coil (21), although these two coils (22, 21) are not necessarily in phase. Apparatus (35) associated with the launch platform generates a constant phase signal (P) having amplitude and sign representing the phase difference between the signal generated by the launch platform's coil (22) and the vertical direction. This phase information (P) is used to correct the guidance commands sent from the launch platform to the guided object (20), or, alternatively, is fed directly to the guided object (20) for correction by said object's on-board computer. A hold fire indicator (33) is provided to inform the operator when the output from the launch platform's coil (22) is above or below a predetermined level sufficient for adequate roll angle compensation.

Magnetic roll sensor calibrator

A structure (47) is rotatable 360.degree. about a vertical azimuth axis and 90.degree. or more about an orthogonal elevation axis. The structure (47) is mounted upon a rotating turret (6) in the general shape of an inverted pyramid, with a vertical generally cylindrical torque tube (11) protruding from the bottom of the turret (6). A drive wheel (12) is attached to the bottom of the tube (11) and provides a mechanical advantage for azimuthal rotation because it is larger than the wheel (25, 26, 30) connecting the top of the tube (11) with the bottom of the turret (6). The turret (6) rotatably turns about tripod base (46) by means of wheels (29) mounted beneath the rim (30) of said upper wheel (25, 26, 30). Elevational motion is provided by means of a lead screw (16) connecting rotating turret (6) with structure (47), which can be a modular mass-producible solar radiation reflector consisting of many identical reflective panels (1), each having the shape of a portion of the surface of a sphere.

Method for mass producing solar radiation reflectors

A structure (47) is rotatable 360.degree. about a vertical azimuth axis and 90.degree. or more about an orthogonal elevation axis. The structure (47) is mounted upon a rotating turret (6) in the general shape of an inverted pyramid, with a vertical generally cylindrical torque tube (11) protruding from the bottom of the turret (6). A drive wheel (12) is attached to the bottom of the tube (11) and provides a mechanical advantage for azimuthal rotation because it is larger than the wheel (25, 26, 30) connecting the top of the tube (11) with the bottom of the turret (6). The turret (6) rotatably turns about tripod base (46) by means of wheels (29) mounted beneath the rim (30) of said upper wheel (25, 26, 30). Elevational motion is provided by means of a lead screw (16) connecting rotating turret (6) with structure (47) which can be a modular mass-producible solar radiation reflector consisting of many identical reflective panels (1), each having the shape of a portion of the surface of a sphere.

Lightweight azimuth/elevation mount

A modular solar radiation concentrator consists of many identical reflective panels (1), each having the shape of a portion of the surface of a sphere. The panels (1) are mass produced, mounted between a pair of horizontal beams (2) so they can partially rotate about two orthogonal axes, and aligned as part of multi-beam (2) modules (3) on a test fixture so that all panels (1) reflect distant radiation upon a small aperture (36). Spaced occur between all panels (1) when mounted in the concentrator. The reflector support structure (4) has a finite number of identically angled bends so that the overall reflector (47) approximates the surface of a sphere. A solar radiation receiver (34) is hingedly suspended to the support structure (4) at the focal point of each of the panels (1). The reflector (47) is mounted upon an azimuth/elevation mount (6, 46), which rotates reflector (47) 360.degree. about a vertical azimuth axis and 90.degree. or more about an orthogonal elevation axis.

Modular solar concentrator

A modular solar radiation concentrator consists of many identical reflective panels (1), each having the shape of a portion of the surface of a sphere. The panels (1) are mass produced, mounted between a pair of horizontal beams (2) so they can partially rotate about two orthogonal axes, and aligned as part of multi-beam (2) modules (3) on a test fixture so that all panels (1) reflect distant radiation upon a small aperture (36). Spaces occur between all panels (1) when mounted in the concentrator. The reflector support structure (4) has a finite number of identically angled bends so that the overall reflector (47) approximates the surface of a sphere. A solar radiation receiver (34) is hingedly suspended to the support structure (4) at the focal point of each of the panels (1).
