The invention relates to an in-line process for producing high-temperature stable glass. A sizing composition is advantageously used to reduce plasticizing between the resinous matrix and the glass fibers. The in-line process uses a melter or furnace apparatus, including a top charging and melting section and an intermediate flow regulator section having a baffle system improving the heat pattern across the glass flow, and a bushing having a tip plate for receiving molten glass from a furnace. The bushing has an enlarged size that allows drawing of a significantly increased number of glass fibers at one time. The fibers have essentially no catenary and may be wound to create a tightly wrapped package of glass fibers of uniform exterior diameter throughout their width. High-strength, high-silica fiber made according to the invention may be advantageously used in filament-winding, pultrusion and weaving processes.

Continuous in-line system for producing high temperature glass fiber materials

A drain bushing for a glass melting apparatus of integral design and machined from a single block of dispersion-strengthened, non-precious alloy. The bushing includes integrally formed mounting flange and molten glass well portions. The bushing contact ears may be either integrally formed or attached by welding, and the outlet tips may be integrally formed with the well portion or inserted into drain openings in the well portion.

Drain bushing

A non-precious metal drain bushing for a glass melting apparatus utilized to manufacture continuous glass fibers. The bushing includes a flat plate positioned beneath the bushing block of the apparatus, the flat plate having a longitudinal rib on its undersurface. Drain apertures are provided through the plate and the rib, and electrical contact ears are provided on the rib. The bushing can be manufactured of either dispersion-strengthened alloy or of a heat-resistant alloy which is not dispersion-strengthened.

A heating unit for converting batch mineral material to molten glass is disclosed. The unit includes a receptacle for the flowable material, heating elements for supplying heat to the flowable material, and movably mounted bus bars for supplying electrical energy to the heating elements, where the bus bars are movable to accommodate the expansion and contraction of the heating elements.
