In one example, a method of designing a drill bit comprises obtaining a baseline orientation of a shaped cutter with respect to a bit body. The shaped cutter includes a shaped cutting element secured to a substrate. The baseline orientation is defined, at least in part, with respect to an rotational position of the shaped cutting element about a longitudinal axis of the shaped cutter. A wear imbalance is determined between opposing portions of the shaped cutting element at the baseline orientation. An adjusted orientation of the shaped cutter is generated having a different rotational position of the shaped cutting element about the cutter axis expected to reduce the wear imbalance.

A shaped cutter is disclosed for use on a drill bit. In one or more example, the shaped cutter includes a substrate including a proximal end and a distal end and defining a cutter axis extending between the proximal and distal ends. A cutting table secured to the proximal end of the substrate includes a cutting face with a central boss axially extending from the cutting face and a plurality of ribs radially extending across the cutting face from the boss to a periphery of the cutting table. The cutting face may recede axially from the periphery towards the central boss, such as by defining a planar section, a plurality of intersecting planar sections, and/or a concave (e.g., frustoconical) shape between adjacent ribs.

A cutting element includes a substrate configured to couple to a pocket formed in a blade of a downhole drill bit and a polycrystalline diamond portion secured to the substrate. The polycrystalline diamond portion includes a cutting face, a radial sidewall, and a cutting edge formed at a transition from the radial sidewall to the axial the cutting face. The cutting face includes a plow feature disposed at a center of the cutting face. The plow feature has a face portion and a shoulder portion. The shoulder portion extends radially outward from the face portion and axially downward toward the substrate. Additionally, the cutting face includes a recessed portion extending between the cutting edge and a radially outer edge of the shoulder portion.

A method comprising identifying a cutter on a drill bit based on a drill bit image, assigning a grading value of the cutter based on a classification model of a machine learning system, wherein the classification model is generated based on a set of training cutter images associated with drill bit characteristics indicators, determining a surface parameter based on a surface of the cutter, generating a comparison value based on the surface parameter, and mapping a set of cutter information to the cutter on the drill bit, wherein the set of cutter information comprises the grading value and the comparison value.

A method includes acquiring an image of a cutter on a drill bit, determining a cutter dull condition based on the image of the cutter using a machine-learning method, wherein the machine-learning method is trained using a set of training images and a set of known cutter dull conditions, wherein each of the set of known cutter dull conditions is associated with one or more of a set of cutters depicted in the set of training images and determining a cutter degradation severity based the image of the cutter. The method also includes generating bit modification instructions based the cutter dull condition and the cutter degradation severity.

A drill bit has a plurality of cutters secured to the bit body, including a gauge cutter defining a gauge diameter of the drill bit. A reciprocating gauge assembly on the bit comprises a cavity defined in the bit body, a piston reciprocably disposed in the cavity, a wear element on an outwardly facing end of the piston, a piston retainer for moveably retaining the piston in the cavity, and a spring biasing the piston outwardly to a neutral position of the wear element with respect to the gauge diameter. The wear element and piston may be urged inwardly in response to an applied load at the drill bit gauge pad, increasing the lateral depth of cut and thereby controlling the aggressiveness of the bit in response to the load.

Systems and methods for wellbore drilling may use one or more cutting elements including a cutting face with one or more channels capable of steering chip cuttings into an intended direction off of the cutting face of the cutting element for drilling operations. A method may comprise rotating a drill bit to extend a wellbore into a subterranean formation, flowing a drilling fluid through the drill bit, and directing a plurality of formation cuttings away from one or more cutting elements of the drill bit by moving the cuttings along one or more channels on at least a portion of a cutting face of the one or more cutting elements.

The present disclosure relates a method of purifying diamond by removing carbon contaminants from diamond grains in the diamond by a plasma cleaning process at a temperature at which metal inclusion contaminants in the diamond grains crack the diamond grains from within, and removing metal contaminants from the diamond in a chemical or electrochemical cleaning process.

The present disclosure relates a spark plasma sintered polycrystalline diamond and methods of spark plasma sintering leached polycrystalline diamond. Spark plasma sintering produces plasma from a reactant gas found in the pores left by catalyst removal from leached polycrystalline diamond. The plasma forms diamond bonds and/or carbide structures in the pores, which may produce polycrystalline diamond that is has a higher impact strength than the leached polycrystalline diamond or other improved properties.

A mold transfer assembly includes a transfer housing providing an interior defined by one or more sidewalls and a top. The transfer housing is sized to receive and encapsulate a mold as the mold is moved between a furnace and a thermal heat sink. An arm is coupled to the transfer housing to move the transfer housing and the mold encapsulated within the transfer housing between the furnace and a thermal heat sink. The transfer housing exhibits one or more thermal properties to control a thermal profile of the mold.
