According to one aspect of the present disclosure, a method and technique for hierarchical network failure handling in a clustered node environment is disclosed. The method includes: detecting a network failure by a node in a cluster, the cluster having plural nodes arranged in a hierarchy, wherein the network failure is associated with a subordinate node in the hierarchy to the detecting node; communicating the network failure from the detecting node to a superior node in the hierarchy; determining whether the network failure affects nodes higher than the detecting node in the hierarchy; and responsive to determining that the network failure does not affect nodes higher than the detecting node in the hierarchy, the detecting node initiating a protocol to expel the subordinate node from the cluster.

Hierarchical network failure handling in a clustered node environment

A method for transparently navigating through exported file system namespaces on a server using a single mount. When an exported file system is mounted onto a client, the client creates a file system ID structure for the exported file system, wherein the file system ID structure is populated with unique properties of the exported file system, and wherein the unique properties include a file system ID. The client also creates an internal virtual file system structure for the exported file system ID structure, wherein the internal virtual file system structure includes a virtual file system ID. Once the file system and virtual file system structures are created, the client links the file system objects created within the mount to the file system ID structure until a user moves from one exported file system to a second exported file system and a new file system ID is detected.

Seamless remote traversal of multiple NFSv4 exported file systems

A computer implemented method, apparatus, and computer usable program code for preserving a virtual file system. Data for a virtual file system is received. The data include file handle information, vnode information, and gnode information. The data is saved to a storage device. The saved data can be used to reconstruct the virtual file system upon changeover between a primary data processing system and a backup data processing system.

Preserving virtual filesystem information across high availability takeover

Provided is a method for implementing a file system that includes a combination of read-only and read/write parts. A file system located on a data server maintains an original copy of a data store. An 'Ephemeral' file system (EFS) is created on a client computer. The data server is contacted only once for each file accessed and the copy is in an original state each time the system is mounted. Changes made to the file system by one client are not seen by other clients. The EFS maintains the file system state in memory and uses the NFS server as a backing stored for cached file data. File data for files created on the client are backed up by the client system's swapping space.

Implementing an ephemeral file system backed by a NFS server

A method, system and apparatus for exporting file systems without having to mount them first are provided. Most Unix-based servers usually mount some system operation critical files at startup. Thus, directories have to be mounted. One or more of these directories are usually used as mount points for mounting other file systems when needed. An extended attribute file is used to provide all information needed to export a file system. Thus, a server need not mount a file system to obtain this information. That is on startup, a server needs only refer to these extended attribute files to obtain the information needed to export the file systems.
