The disclosure relates to an apparatus for dispensing sheet material such as paper towels. The dispensing apparatus when activated dispenses sheet material for a predetermined time which results in a predetermined length of sheet material being dispensed. The dispensing apparatus is actuated in response to the proximity of a portion of a hand of a user to the dispensing apparatus without the hand of a user contacting the apparatus. The dispensing apparatus dispenses sheet material from a roll of material by means of an electrical motor operating for a predetermined time to advance a predetermined length of the sheet material. The motor for advancing a predetermined length of the sheet material can be battery powered. The housing of the dispensing apparatus has a modular frame having a first compartment for the means for advancing the sheet material and a second compartment for the means for activating the advancing means. The dispensing apparatus can include means for storing energy for energizing the advancing means in response to the withdrawal of sheet material from the dispensing apparatus by a user.

Apparatus for dispensing sheet material

Electrical batteries are integrated with a disposable container of flowable material for powering a dispensing apparatus. The disposable container includes a deformable chamber for containing a predetermined quantity of material to be dispensed, and an electrically energized actuating member deforms the chamber for dispensing the flowable material. The dispensing apparatus is actuated by a photocell system which electrically energizes the actuating member in response to the proximity of a user to the dispensing apparatus without the user contacting the apparatus. The photocell system normally is inactive, and is rendered active by a sensor for detecting the proximity of a user to the apparatus.

Liquid crystal display for use in an oscilloscope. Analog multiplexing techniques enable displaying of waveforms of input signals with frequencies as high as 1 MHz. An xy grid is formed by two interleaved arrays of alternate parallel transparent electrodes. Use of liquid crystal material results in very low power consumption and voltage threshold, improved lifetime, a wide viewing angle, and no image washout at high ambient light levels. Addition of a digital voltmeter, frequency counter, auto sync circuitry, dual trace, and movable cursor expands the capabilities of the display. A gray scale surrounds the actual null points on the display, allowing suitable resolution with a minimum of channels.

Waveforms on a liquid crystal display

The disclosure relates to an apparatus and method for forming a scanning electron beam for use in a flat screen cathode ray tube device. An analog addressing method enables scanning of one axis of the screen of the CRT device. During scanning, all portions of a sheet of electrons emitted by a line cathode are deflected at any given time and blocked by an analog horizontal-positioning deflection grid except for one narrow portion disposed along the length of the line cathode. At the one portion, a narrow beam of electrons is formed. The grid contains an address plate and a load plate. The load plate creates a voltage gradient causing each location along its horizontal axis to be at a distinct voltage. Horizontal scanning is accomplished by applying a varying central voltage to the address plate. This varying voltage will be matched by an equal voltage at a single predetermined location along the horizontal axis of the load plate adjacent to which electrons can pass undeflected in the form of a beam. At all other locations along the horizontal axis, unequal voltages on the plates deflect electrons in the sheet passing between them and cause the electrons to be blocked. Vertical scanning is accomplished by varying the voltage difference between two parallel vertical deflection plates between which the scanned electron beam passes. The disclosure also relates to the use of electromagnetic rather than electrostatic deflections in producing a scanning electron beam from a line cathode. In addition, the disclosure relates to multiple beams for scanning and producing of color images.

Methods and arrangements are also disclosed for superimposing varying and a dc fields in field sensitive material. Various display patterns such as a movable dot, intersecting lines and a pivoting line can be obtained.
