The base defines a liquid retaining reservoir and has a cover with a straw containing compartment which includes a tubular section and an enlarged section. A pivotally mounted lever has a portion accessible from the exterior of the container and an interior portion situated within the enlarged section of the straw containing compartment. In the retracted position of the straw, a lid seals the straw opening in the cover and the straw seals the liquid passage between the base reservoir and the tubular section. When pivoted, the lever moves the straw up the compartment to open the lid and protrude above the cover. The interior portion of the lever is bifurcated and moves through an arcuate path. The enlarged section is shaped to accommodate this arcuate travel path.

Liquid container within retractable straw

A banding assembly has a needle at one end, a long thin band, and a buckle at the other end. The buckle is provided with upstanding elements on either side of a channel which receives the band. The elements have openings adapted to be engaged by a towel clamp to retain the buckle as the band is drawn through the channel and locks into position. The elements are normally spaced apart by a distance slightly less than the width of the band. Once locked into place, the band is trimmed, leaving a tail extending from the buckle. The tail is bent backwards and 'snap fits' between the elements. The elements are then crimped over the tail to retain it on the buckle and to cover any sharp edges. A dome-like member is provided to guide the band into the channel. The buckle is attached to the end of the band by spaced tabs which extend through openings in the band and are crimped toward each other.

Sternum banding assembly

Movement of the cover relative to the housing spring loads and latches a piston carrier in the armed position. Inhalation causes a passageway door to open, releasing the carrier latch to permit the carrier to be moved toward the canister by the spring. The piston moves with the carrier, due to a fluid connection therebetween, applying a compression force on the spring loaded canister valve stem and causing it to dispense the inhalant through an opening in the piston which functions as a nozzle. After the inhalant is dispensed, the carrier fluid vents permitting the spring of the canister valve stem to move the piston relative to the carrier, and thus release the force applied to the valve stem by the piston. The sensitivity of the toggle linkage between the door and the carrier latch is adjustable. The linkage can be manually tripped for testing purposes.

Inhalation actuated dispensing apparatus

An intestinal occluding clamp including first and second clamping members with jaws, a biasing spring, a clamp housing, a clamp base and a clamp cap. The clamp housing has a housing cavity formed at one end thereof and a first clamping member is connected to and projects away from the housing cavity. The biasing spring is disposed within the cavity and circumferentially about the base post. The clamp cap and biasing spring are retractably mounted within the housing cavity and provide a spring-loaded, push-button housing for simple and reliable operation. Take-up clearances within the housing are provided such that when the cap is fully depressed downwardly with one's thumb, the distal ends of the jaws first move apart until the clamp is in locked-open position with no spring resistance against the surgeon's thumb, and when the clamp is released, the clamping members move towards each other during spring-biased forced closing movement, and finally the jaws become substantially parallel with the tubular structure, interposed therebetween. Another aspect of the present invention is an intestinal occluding clamp with first and second corrugated surfaces having anti-slip grooves which facilitate sliding of an intestine between the open clamping members with minimal degree of resistance or reacting force and, provides essentially high resistance to movement of clamped vessel's out from between the substantially parallel, closed clamping members.

Surgical clamping device

A banding assembly with which sternum halves can be brought into abutting closure, the assembly including as a unitary arrangement, a needle for initiating passage of a band member connected at one end thereto around the sternum and there being a buckle connected to the band opposite end to allow for band loop formation and drawn tight enclosure of the sternum halves, the buckle and band embodying loop locking structure and excess band length being readily removable upon completion of the closure banding.

Bonding assembly and method for sternum closing

A mechanism for mounting and removing a blade having an elongated slot mounting means from a blade handle which has a mounting boss for insertion into the elongated slot. The mechanism includes a handle guide forming one side of a passageway for insertion of the handle therethrough, the handle guide having a flexible body which is sufficiently flexible to allow deflection of the handle for withdrawal of the boss out of mating relationship with the elongated slot. The mechanism further includes blade extracting means fixed opposite the handle guide forming a second side of the passageway and having a blade retaining projection arranged adjacent the passageway which can be actuated to prevent withdrawal of a blade from the passageway. Finally, an actuation means is included which is fixed for actuation of the blade extracting means upon deflection of the handle sufficient to disengage the boss from mating relationship with the elongated slot so that a blade mounted on the handle can be removed therefrom when the handle is withdrawn from the passageway. The present invention also includes a device including such mechanism in combination with a blade retaining and/or disposal well which can serve as a blade dispenser and/or disposal device.
