A hinged structure includes a hinge that is actuatable using a hydraulic cylinder. A method of monitoring a load applied to the hinged structure involves leaking the hydraulic fluid from the hydraulic cylinder in a way that compensates for expansion of the hydraulic fluid caused by variations in temperature of the hydraulic fluid. The method further involves measuring the pressure of the hydraulic fluid in the hydraulic cylinder. The hydraulic cylinder may be part of a coiled tubing injector. The load applied to the hydraulic cylinder may be used to indicate an overload of the tubing guide.

When one of at least two independently driven gripper chains () of a coiled tubing injector () begins to turn faster than another one of the injector's other independently drive gripper chains by an amount that indicates slipping of one of the independently driven gripper chains relative to tubing () being held between the driven gripper chains, a hydraulic timing circuit (), which is coupled with the driven chains through hydraulic timing motors (), generates a pressure signal that causes the injector's hydraulic traction system to increase the hydraulic pressure applied by hydraulic cylinders () to generate a normal force applied by grippers on the chains to the tubing.

The invention pertains to methods and apparatus for monitoring loads on an arched tubing guide of a coiled tubing injector caused by tension on coiled tubing. The load is sensed by a load sensor, for example, a load cell placed in a strut that supports the arched tubing guide, or in a load pin or load cell placed within the structure arched tubing guide or the connection of the arched tubing guide to a frame for the coiled tubing injector, at a location where the load is representative of the load placed on an arched tubing guide by tension in the coiled tubing. The load sensor generates a feedback signal. The load is monitored, either by an operator or a controller, and torque applied to a reel around which the tubing is wound is adjusted to avoid, or in response to, excessive loads on the arched tubing guide.

A coiled tubing injector comprises a drive system for independently driving a plurality of chains independently but otherwise retarding relative motion between the driven chains when a chain begins to slip uncontrollably.

A modified planetary gear box and arrangement of the gear box with a drive motor permits electrical, optical or other types of cabling or wiring to be passed through the planetary gear box along its axis of rotation. The planetary gear box drives or rotates a reel of coiled tubing. Electrical, hydraulic, optical and other types of line for lowering into a well bore through the coiled tubing is passed through a passageway through the center of the planetary gear box, into one end of a hub of the reel, and then into the coiled tubing, which is injected into the wellbore. The other end of the hub of the reel is able to be connected to a swivel joint that can be connected to a pump for pumping fluid into the coiled tubing.

The invention provides processes for coating the surface of substrates such as a sheet, film, foam, fiber, etc., with a curable liquid resin or solution of curable resin, then in one embodiment, stably attaching a superabsorbent polymeric powder to such resin, and then curing the resin to form a coated superabsorbent product. Such substrates may include polymeric materials. Other process embodiments utilizing curable and thermoplastic resinous powders may be used instead of curable liquid resins and resulting products are included in the invention. Other embodiments involve affixing a container at least partially filled with superabsorbent polymeric powder to a substrate, placing the container proximate to the element, or affixing the container to a separate member. The products may be utilized for water and nutrient retention in combination with irrigation, erosion control, to direct plant root growth, and to clean up standing water and petroleum spills.

The present invention provides a method for the synthesis of unagglomerated, highly dispersed, stable core/shell nanocomposite particles comprised of preparing a reverse micelle microemulsion that contains nanocomposite particles, treating the microemulsion with a silane coupling agent, breaking the microemulsion to form a suspension of the nanocomposite particles by adding an acid/alcohol solution to the microemulsion that maintains the suspension of nanocomposite particles at a pH of between about 6 and 7, and simultaneously washing and dispersing the suspension of nanocomposite particles, preferably with a size exclusion HPLC system modified to ensure unagglomeration of the nanocomposite particles. The primary particle size of the nanocomposite particles can range in diameter from between about 1 to 100 nm, preferably from between about 10 to 50 nm, more preferably about 10 to 20 nm, and most preferably about 20 nm.
