A fan duct assembly includes a bypass duct, an outlet guide vane assembly, and a flow control system. The bypass duct has an outer wall and an inner wall that define a gas path for bypass air therebetween. The outlet guide vane assembly is coupled with the bypass duct and includes a plurality of vanes. The flow control system is configured to direct selectively a portion of the bypass air flowing through the gas path radially into each of the plurality of vanes.

Circumferentially variable flow control in fan outlet guide vane assemblies for distortion management and stall margin in gas turbine engines

A turbofan engine has a fan portion in fluid communication with a core stream and a bypass stream of air separated by splitters disposed both upstream and downstream of the fan portion. A blade splitter (shroud) on the fan partially spans the fan blade thus separating the core and bypass streams downstream while leaving a gap upstream for communication between the flows. The communication gap expands the operational range of the fan over fans without the communication gap.

Adaptive vertical lift engine (AVLE) fan

A fan assembly includes a fan duct, an inlet fan, an outlet guide vane assembly, and a control system. The inlet fan includes fan blades adapted to rotate about a central axis to force fan exit air toward an aft end of the fan duct. The outlet guide vane assembly is located in the fan duct downstream of the inlet fan and is configured to adjust a direction of the fan exit air. The outlet guide vane assembly includes a plurality of guide vanes that extend radially relative to the central axis and are configured to rotate to a first vane-pitch angle. The control system is configured to rotate the guide vanes redirect the fan exit air, vary a pressure downstream of the fan inlet, minimize intake flow distortion experienced by the inlet fan, reduce inlet fan vibratory response and/or improve fan operability margins.

Systems for controlling variable outlet guide vanes

A fan assembly includes a fan duct, an inlet fan, and an outlet guide vane assembly. The inlet fan includes blades adapted to force fan exit air toward an aft end of the fan duct. The outlet guide vane assembly is located in the fan duct downstream of the inlet fan and is configured to adjust a direction of the fan exit air received from the blades. The outlet guide vane assembly includes a first plurality of outlet guide vanes including a first outlet guide vane configured to rotate to a first angle so as to redirect the fan exit air in a first direction and a second outlet guide vane configured to rotate to a second angle so as to redirect the fan exit air in a second direction. The second outlet guide vane is located at a different circumferential position than the first outlet guide vane.

Controllable variable fan outlet guide vanes

A fan assembly includes a fan duct, an inlet fan, and an outlet guide vane assembly. The inlet fan includes blades adapted to force fan exit air toward an aft end of the fan duct. The outlet guide vane assembly is located in the fan duct downstream of the inlet fan and is configured to adjust a direction of the fan exit air received from the blades. The outlet guide vane assembly includes a first plurality of vanes configured to rotate to redirect the fan exit air in a first direction, and a second plurality of vanes located downstream of the first plurality of vanes. The second plurality of vanes are configured to rotate to redirect the fan exit air flowing in the first direction in a second direction to minimize losses created by distortions in fan inlet air and created by the first vanes.

Variable tandem fan outlet guide vanes

A fan assembly includes a fan duct, an inlet fan, and an outlet guide vane assembly. The inlet fan forces fan exit air toward an aft end of the fan duct. The outlet guide vane assembly is located in the fan duct downstream of the inlet fan and adjusts a direction of the fan exit air, and includes a plurality of outlet guide vanes and a plurality of actuation assemblies that control rotation of the outlet guide vanes about a pitch axis. The outlet guide vanes include a leading edge portion and a trailing edge portion rotatably coupled to an axially aft edge of the leading edge portion. The actuation assembly rotates the leading edge portion and the trailing edge portion to minimize losses created by distortions in fan inlet air and created by the leading edge portion redirecting the fan exit air in the first direction.

Variable outlet guide vanes

A system includes a housing for a gas turbine engine, and a fan disposed in the housing to rotate coaxially with a gas turbine included in the housing. The system also includes an inlet guide vane disposed in the housing in axial alignment with the fan and configured to have an open position where a first flow of air is received by the fan through the inlet guide vane, and a closed position where airflow through the inlet guide vane is obstructed. The system further includes a heat exchanger disposed in a supply passage in fluid communication with a second flow of air received by the fan. The second flow of air is received by the fan via the supply passage with the inlet guide vane in the open position or in the closed position.

Inlet guide vane draw heat exchanger system

A gas turbine engine system includes a gas turbine engine having a fan bypass duct, a heat exchanger system, and a flow transfer unit configured to selectively allow or preclude flow between the fan bypass duct and the heat exchanger system. A controller is coupled to and configured to vary the state of one or more of a fan exit nozzle, a heat exchanger exit nozzle, and a flow control valve controlling flow between the fan bypass duct and the heat exchanger system.

Gas turbine engine with reversible heat exchanger

An integrated propulsion system comprising at least two gas turbine engines, at least one fan, and a transmission assembly coupling the at least two gas turbine engines to the at least one fan wherein the at least two gas turbine engines are disposed within a main body of an airframe comprising the main body and a pair of wings, and wherein the number of gas turbine engines is greater than the number of fans.

Integrated aircraft propulsion system

A compressor for a gas turbine engine is disclosed. The compressor includes a first compression stage mounted for rotation about a central axis that includes a plurality of first-stage blades. The compressor also includes a second compression stage mounted along the central axis aft of the first compression stage to receive air compressed by the first compression stage. The second compression stage includes a plurality of second-stage blades.

Hybrid compressor

A gas turbine engine axial compressor vane is disclosed having an aperture capable of flowing a relatively high pressure working fluid to change a direction of a flow vector downstream of the vane. The relatively high pressure working fluid can originate from a compressor discharge. The vane may have any number of apertures.
