There is provided a method of reducing traffic on a data network. The method includes (i) reading an indicator of whether a last attempted communication with a network device was successful, and (ii) performing discovery of the network device at each time specified by a first schedule in response to the indicator indicating that the last attempted communication with the network device was successful, and at each time specified by a second schedule in response to the indicator indicating that the last attempted communication with the network device was not successful. There is also provided a system that performs the method, and a storage device that contains a program that controls a processor to perform the method.

Data network device discovery optimization to reduce data transfer volume

A synthesizer is disclosed and is digitally tuned and locked in a measured frequency. The synthesizer uses both the dual voltage control oscillator, each operating over less than an octave, in combination with the microwave doublers to produce a multi-octave RF output with low having low harmonics and free of spurious output signals thereon. The synthesizer uses a sampling downconverter that would, without the benefits of the present invention, produce an ambiguous IF output signal that is translated from the VCO microwave frequency. The ambiguity of the sampling downconverter is corrected by using in-phase and quadrature components of the IF output signal produced by the downconverter along with an Arc Tan to generate a series of digital phase data that is compared against a known reference to eliminate the ambiguity of the VCO frequency. The synthesizer further uses at least one clocking source having an output that is selectively filtered to avoid singularity problems normally plaguing downconverters.

Interference suppression circuit and method thereof for multi-channel receivers

A digitally tuned oscillator synthesizer having a correlator circuit and selectable voltage controlled oscillators is disclosed. The correlator circuit develops an accurate output which provides frequency stability for the synthesizer, whereas the voltage oscillators each operate over less than an octave of a desired RF frequency output, but cooperatively operate to produce RF outputs over a wide range of frequencies.

A method and apparatus for providing welding power includes a power supply that receives utility and engine power. The power supply has an engine power input and a utility power input. One of the engine power input and the utility power input is selectively connected to the power supply in response to a mode select input, controlled by an input selector. The input selector may include a user selectable input, such as a sensor circuit or a user switch on a welder control panel, preferably a three position switch having an engine mode position, a utility mode position and an off position in various alternatives. The engine is disabled when utility power is selected. Disabling the engine includes one or more of cutting the field current, starter current, and/or battery current. The power supply may include an inverter, chopper, and/or a phase controlled device. The welder is preferably a single-package, stand-alone welder, and/or includes an engine/generator having a welding and an auxiliary output.

An arrangement for accurately measuring the frequency of an RF signal is disclosed. The arrangement includes a coaxial delay line carrying the RF signal and a means for directly measuring the resistance of the coaxial delay line and which resistance measurement is directly correlatable to temperature changes of the coaxial delay line. The arrangement, in response to the changes in the temperature of the coaxial delay line, provides appropriate signals to compensate for the temperature changes in order to prevent any temperature changes from degrading the accuracy of the frequency measured by the arrangement.

A dental instrument includes an elongate handle having a structural axis, a drill bit mounted to the handle at a distal end thereof for rotation about a rotation axis different from and substantially parallel to the structural axis, and a drive operatively connected to the drill bit and disposed at least partially in the handle for rotating the drill bit about the rotation axis. The drill bit is part of a bit assembly detachably secured to the handle at the distal end thereof. Where the handle includes a nozzle at the distal end, the bit assembly including means for redirecting liquid from the nozzle approximately to a free end of the drill bit. This redirection component may include a deflector surface or, alternatively, a channel or passageway for repressurizing liquid from the nozzle. In the latter case, another nozzle is provided at the downstream end of the channel or passageway. In addition, it is contemplated that the bit assembly includes a mechanical power linkage releasably connected to the drive. The mechanical linkage may be permanently or removably connected to the drill bit.

A circuit arrangement and a method of use thereof are disclosed both for processing a serial stream of randomly occurring digital words to detect exact or similar words relative to digital words previously received. The circuit arrangement eliminates the unnecessary burden of a radar system from processing data normally caused by the reflection of an RF signal from a physical object. The circuit arrangement comprises means for truncating each received digital word to a predetermined most significant bit (MSB) resolution by dropping at least one least significant bit (LSB) at the right end of the received word. The truncated word serves as an exact word reference. The circuit arrangement further has means for examining the dropped least significant bit (LSB) and if it is a 'logic 1', adding a 'logic 1' to the truncated received digital word, and conversely, if it is a logic '0', subtracting '1' from the truncated word. The addition and subtraction forming a similar word reference. The circuit arrangement further comprises first means for receiving, holding and comparing the similar word reference against a previously received similar word reference and generating a first output signal if there is a difference therebetween. A second means is provided for receiving, holding and comparing the exact word reference against a previous exact word reference and generating a second output signal if there is a difference therebetween. The circuit arrangement further comprises OR circuit means which receives the first and second output signals and generates a third output signal in the presence of either the first or second output signal so as to notify an external circuit that a redundant measured RF frequency signal has been received, thereby, eliminating any unnecessary processing of such a redundant signal.

A circuit arrangement is disclosed that performs one or all of the functions selected from the group comprising (1) establishing a threshold level for detecting and encoding selected parameters of RF signals; (2) establishes a threshold level that corresponds to a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and which is used for detecting and encoding selected parameters of RF signals; and (3) determining the tangent angle of the received RF signals which is further used for measuring the frequency of the RF signal. The circuit arrangement comprises a microwave correlator including a power divider, a delay line, a quadrature coupler, and two multipliers. The circuit arrangement further comprises an RF amplifier, a bandpass filter, low pass filters, analog-to-digital converters, and preferably a PROM. The microwave correlator splits the RF signals between two paths, with one path being delayed with respect to the other, and then multiplies delayed RF signals with the undelayed RF signals to provide a video signal containing both sine and cosine information. The sine and cosine information are converted to digital representations which are used to provide any of the three features of the present invention.

Microwave receiver having coherent threshold detection

A digital amplitude quantizer is disclosed having sequential stages each for measuring a selected portion of the overall range of the level of power of applied RF signals. Each of the sequential stages comprises a serial arrangement of a directional coupler, a detector, an amplifier, and an analog-to-digital converter. The directional coupler of each stage is activated when it receives a predetermined level of power of the applied RF signals. The sequential stages further comprise a series arrangement of PROMs and latches that are shared by adjacent stages. In operation, the RF amplifier in the uppermost or last stage is commonly driven into its limiting condition by appropriate RF signals. When the uppermost stage is nearly into its limiting operation, the directional coupler in the preceding stage receives a sufficient level of power of the RF signals and continues to do so until its related RF amplifier is also driven into limitation. When this preceding stage is nearly into its limiting operation, the next lower stage is activated and begins its operation. This sequential or chain like interrelationship continues until all the stages in the quantizer participate in the measurement of the overall range of power of the applied RF signals. Also, in operation, shared PROMs generate a digital quantity and control their latches so that a composite digital representation is provided and indicates the power level of the applied RF signals.

Digital amplitude quantizer

A circuit arrangement that utilizes digital data representative of the amplitude of an RF pulse envelope is disclosed. The circuit arrangement comprises a PROM having prestored and addressable routines and a nine stage sequentially arranged eight (8) bit latches that are clocked at a rate of 25 nanoseconds. The circuit arrangement determines, within 25 nanoseconds, when the maximum value of the RF pulse envelope is within a selectable 6 dB or 3 dB point and generates a control signal SV that causes the data in the upper stages of the nine stage latches to be frozen and further generates an address that is routed to the PROM, wherein a family of waveform shapes are accessed. The circuit arrangement provides for four (4) data points that are examined by prestored routines of the PROM and compared against the prestored family of waveform shapes, and, upon a match therebetween, determines the time of arrival (TOA) and pulse width of the RF pulse envelope being received by the circuit arrangement.

Precision time measurements

A radio frequency receiver wherein received signals are directed to a mixer through a pair of signal channels, the bandwidth of one of the pair of signal channels being a selected narrow portion of the bandwidth of the other one of the pair of signal channels. With such arrangement a received signal within a wide band of frequencies is passed to the mixer through both channels to become homodyned to a fixed intermediate frequency signal. Noise received by the wide bandwidth receiver while also passed through the both channels is mixed with only a narrow portion of itself, and hence the amount of noise at the fixed intermediate frequency is reduced with the result that the sensitivity of the receiver is correspondingly increased. An instantaneous frequency measuring unit is also fed by the selected narrow portion of the wide bandwidth signal channel to determine the frequency of the received signal with improved sensitivity.
