The present invention is directed to a torque transmitting bicycle freewheel coasting mechanism comprising a drive body, a driven body and rolling bearing elements supporting and spacing these bodies during coasting. The rolling element bearings are elastically deformable and, during the application of a sufficiently large driving force to the drive body, they deform to allow relative movement between the bodies to bring one body into contact with the other body. This movement is small and the load is carried directly from one body to the other body without damage to the rolling element bearings. The bodies are only highly loaded by drive loads during torque transmission. During coasting, the flexible balls or rollers spring back and support the bodies in a spaced relationship in a normal bearing fashion. The flexible rolling bearing elements are not hard so bearing raceways can be formed directly into the bodies.

Bicycle coasting mechanism

A splined drive body for supporting a plurality of sprockets is disclosed. The drive body is provided with at least one composite drive body spline which consists of a first portion made up of the drive body material and a second portion made up of a different, harder material. The second portion of the composite drive body spline is an insert which includes a force receiving surface and a force transmitting surface and is operable to transmit force transmitted to it into the drive body through a force receiving surface provided on the first portion of the composite drive body spline.

Load transmitting insert for a soft spline body

A method for producing a bicycle wheel rim is disclosed. The method involves extruding a thin-walled, hollow body having the cross-sectional shape of the rim and an integral external tab. The walls of the hollow body are sufficiently thin that a length of the hollow body without the external tab is subject to buckling when roll formed to produce a rim. The tab is so positioned and sized that the hollow body with the integral external tab is not subject to buckling when roll formed. A portion of the extrusion is then rolled to a circular shape; the circular portion is cut from the extrusion; the free ends are connected, and the external tab is removed.

Method for producing a lightweight bicycle wheel rim

Bicycle wheel rims with internally reinforced spoke seats are disclosed along with methods for producing them. The rims are produced from a rim blank with at least one circumferentially extending spoke attachment region that has a relatively uniform given thickness. Access holes are formed in an upper web of the rim blank and tooling is positioned above and below the spoke attachment region to form a reinforced spoke seat and a spoke hole therein. Material that is upset and moved from the location of the spoke hole is displaced into an annular region where it reinforces the spoke hole. Material in the vicinity of the spoke hole can be displaced towards the inside of the rim and material can be removed from the undisplaced portions of the spoke region leaving a reinforced area around the spoke hole.

Bicycle wheel rim with internally reinforced spoke seats and method for producing them

A bicycle seat post and clamp for mounting in the seat tube of a bicycle frame and clamping to the bicycle seat rails. The seat post has a straight section to insert into the seat tube and a preferably toroidal section that is clamped by the clamp. The clamp includes a cradle with hooks at opposing ends that extend around seat rails, and a strap with hooks at opposing ends to extend around the seat rails in the opposing direction. A screw extends between two legs making up the strap for tightening the strap, thereby decreasing the size of the opening formed by the clamp, thus clamping the clamp to the seat post and the seat rails.

Bicycle seat post

A deep V-section aero rim for a tensioned spoke wheel and a method for producing it are disclosed. The rim is produced by extruding an alloy to produce a rim profile, rolling the extrusion, cutting the rolled extrusion to length, joining the free ends to produce a rim blank and mechanically reducing the thickness of the rim side walls a substantial amount. In one embodiment, each of the side walls, after extrusion, has a thickness that is sufficient to withstand buckling of the side walls during rolling. After rolling and cutting the extrusion to length, its ends are joined and each side wall, namely, the portion between the rim floor and the braking surface, is thinned, preferably by mechanical abrasion, until each side wall is so thin that an extrusion having side walls of that thickness could not be rolled without side wall buckling. In another embodiment, flanges on the outside of the side walls prevent buckling during rolling and the flanges are removed after rolling.

Lightweight bicycle wheel rim and method for producing it

The present invention is directed to a bicycle coasting mechanism. The coasting mechanism includes a plurality of pawls which are rotatably mounted and which are configured to engage a plurality of ratchet teeth. A linkage engages each pawl and causes the substantially simultaneous engagement of each pawl with the ratchet teeth.

Locking the headset of a steering post of a bicycle is accomplished by this invention where the steering post or threaded body projects coaxially through a cylindrical journal mounted at the front end of the bicycle frame. Bearing cups are secured in each end of the journal to accommodate thrust bearings. Each thrust bearing in turn is engaged by a cone. The lower cone is mounted stationary on the fork-steering post of the bicycle while the upper cone is threaded engaged to the mounting post body and is drawn hand tight against the upper thrust bearing. The upper cone is locked against rotational movement by a lock nut threaded on the post body above the upper cone and spaced from the upper cone. The locking configuration is achieved by one or more screws extending through an opening in the lock nut and engaging the upper cone to jam the threaded connections between the lock nut, upper cone and steering post body.

Headset locking mechanism

A rotary phased radial thrust variable drive transmission which is lcoated between an input driving member, such as the pedal-driven sprocket of a bicycle, and an output driven member, such as the hub of a bicycle wheel which are mounted for relative rotation on a common axis, such as the axle of the rear wheel of a bicycle. The transmisison includes radial thrust linkages which are carried by the input driving member for cooperating with a surrounding cam ring assembly having a normally fixed cam profile providing a torsional thrust on the output driven member to cause rotation thereof. The cam ring assembly is selectively adjustable to vary its profile.

Rotary phased radial thrust variable drive transmission

A clamping means for clamping the wires of a saddle to the upper end of a support post of a bicycle frame or the like. It consists of a lower cradle support clamping member and a cooperating upper clamping member which are mounted on the post to permit tilting of the saddle. The clamping members are so designed that they can be extruded from metal with a post-receiving socket at the lower side of the lower member. This socket, because the lower member is extruded, has a flat inner wall and side walls extending linearly in spaced relationship, with the side walls being at sharp angles to the inner flat wall to provide sharp corners for engaging the sides of the post at a fulcrum formed thereon to prevent lateral displacement of the lower cradle support on the post.

Saddle support for bicycles, motorcycles, and the like

An expander for a bicycle seat support post inserted into a tubular socket of the bicycle frame. The post has an expandable collar which is expanded by means of a wedge-like expanding member which projects from the collar and which is moved axially thereinto by means of a tension link. Movement of the link to pull the wedge-like member farther into the collar is accomplished by a screw angularly supported on the post at an angle of less than ninety degrees to its axis.

A wire bottle cage, which has an insert open end and a closed or stop end with a back formed of laterally-spaced longitudinally-extending wires with a bumper and guide at the front and a catch and guide at the back which serve to cause the corner, at the bottom of the bottle, to slide along the back wires as it is inserted into or removed from the cage, along with special mounting means to attach the cage to a cycle bar or similar support in such a manner as not to interfere with the sliding action of the bottle on the back wires and to positively lock the cage in place on the bar.
