An electrical machine includes a fan guard having a first air flow channel. A stator assembly is coupled to the fan guard and includes a stator yoke having a cylindrical outer surface and a stator pole shoe. The stator pole shoe includes a plurality of stator poles coupled to the stator yoke. The stator assembly includes a second air flow channel defined between the stator yoke and an adjacent pair of the stator poles. A rotor assembly is positioned inside the stator assembly. The rotor assembly includes a rotatable shaft and a rotor. The rotatable shaft defines a rotation axis. A control electronics board includes a plurality of heat making components and is enclosed in a housing having a vented base and a closure. The housing is coupled to the stator assembly opposite the fan guard. The vented base includes a plurality of vent openings opened toward the fan guard.

Electrical machine and controller and methods of assembling the same

A motor controller configured to be coupled to a motor and to a system controller is described. The motor controller includes a proportional-integral (PI) regulator coupled to a timer controller. The motor controller is configured to generate, by the PI regulator, a pulsed signal representing a reported speed of the motor. Additionally, the motor controller is configured to transmit the pulsed signal to the system controller, measure a time period that elapses for the motor to make a predefined number of revolutions, measure a number of pulses transmitted in the pulsed signal, and determine a measured speed of the motor from the time period. Further, the motor controller is configured to determine, by the PI regulator, a difference between the reported speed and the measured speed, and adjust, by the PI regulator, the pulsed signal based on the difference between the reported speed and the measured speed.

System and method for communicating data with a motor controller

An electric machine is described. The electric machine includes a rotor comprising a rotor disk and a plurality of permanent magnets magnetically coupled to the rotor disk. The plurality of permanent magnets include a substantially flat profile and are aligned in a substantially planar array. The electric machine also includes a stator comprising a solid stator core and a plurality of coils each wound around a coil insulating member. The stator core includes a plurality of stator teeth extending substantially parallel to an axis of rotation of the rotor.

An axial flux electric machine and associated method of use that includes a shaft, a rotor attached to the shaft, a plurality of permanent magnets positioned underneath the rotor, an electrical winding positioned below the plurality of permanent magnets, a stator that encircles the shaft that is located below the rotor, a first bearing assembly located below the stator and encircling the shaft of the rotor, a second bearing assembly located below the first bearing assembly and encircling the shaft, and a spring mechanism, located between the first bearing assembly and the second bearing assembly, to distribute load placed on the shaft between the first bearing assembly and the second bearing assembly.

Axial load sharing bearing system and associated method of use

A bearing system and journal which may incorporate either a sleeve or a ball bearing. The system includes a bearing journal having a sleeve bearing portion and a ball bearing portion. When a sleeve bearing is used in the system, a first end of the sleeve bearing is supported in the sleeve bearing portion of the journal, and a second end of the sleeve bearing is supported by a finger spring. The sleeve bearing and finger spring are retained within the journal by an end cap, which is press-fit into the ball bearing portion of the journal. When a ball bearing is used in the system, the ball bearing may be press-fit directly into the ball bearing portion of the bearing journal, or press-fit into a spacer, which is press-fit into the ball bearing portion of the bearing journal.
