A method for controlling a ventilator to provide variable volume (VV) with average volume assured pressure support (AVAPS), including: producing a VV target volume using a VV distribution function; producing a volume error Verror that is the difference between the VV target volume and a measured volume of the previous breath; scaling the volume error Verror; producing a VV target difference as the difference between VV target volume and the VV target volume of the previous breath; producing a modified volume error by adding the VV target difference to the scaled volume error Verror; producing a delta pressure support ΔPS based upon the modified volume error and a dynamic compliance; and producing a current pressure support value based upon the delta pressure support ΔPS and the pressure support value of the previous breath.

The present disclosure pertains to a system and method for monitoring lung disease in a patient that is based on information that is derivable from home therapy devices including a ventilation therapy device and an oxygen saturation monitor such as a pulse oximeter. The measured parameters are used to model shunt fraction and a volume of dead space. Based on changes in gas exchange and results of a nitrogen washout test, a change in gas exchange impairment in the patient is observed and is then used to determine progression of a disease, identify a cause of the impairment, and/or to guide treatment of the patient.

System and method for monitoring gas exchange

The present disclosure pertains to a system () configured to automatically set the positive end expiratory pressure (PEEP) during mechanical ventilation (). The system uses a measured relationship between transpulmonary pressure and lung volume () to set PEEP () such that mechanically assisted breaths are delivered more effectively to open airways (e.g., tidal breaths will be delivered to airways that consist of alveoli that have not contracted or collapsed at the end of expiration) (). Imaging system and method for control and diagnostics within mechanical ventilation

A ventilator that is small, lightweight, and portable, yet capable of being quickly adapted to operate in a plurality of different modes and configurations to deliver a variety of therapies to a patent. A porting system having a plurality of sensors structured to monitor a number of parameters with respect to the flow of gas, and a number of porting blocks is used to reconfigure the ventilator so that it operates as a single-limb or dual limb ventilator. In the single-limb configuration, an active or passive exhaust assembly can be provided proximate to the patient. The ventilator is capable of operate in a volume or pressure support mode, even in a single-limb configuration. In addition, a power control mechanism controls the supply of power to the ventilator from an AC power source, a lead acid battery, an internal rechargeable battery pack, and a detachable battery pack.

The present disclosure pertains to a pressure support system configured to identify respiratory events of a subject. The system is configured to produce and analyze signals pertaining to one or more parameters of the pressurized flow of breathable gas to identify respiratory events. The respiratory events may include coughs and/or other respiratory events. The parameters may comprise a pressure, flow and/or volume of the pressurized flow of breathable gas. In some embodiments, cough detection may be based on a vibration in pressure, a negative spike in flow, a cessation in flow, and/or a large insufflation. In some embodiments, the system comprises one or more of a pressure generator, a subject interface, one or more sensors, a processor, a user interface, electronic storage, and/or other components.

The present disclosure pertains to a mechanical ventilator system configured to control a pressurized flow of breathable gas for delivery to a subject based on alveolar ventilation of the subject. The present disclosure pertains to a method and system configured for detecting a gas delivery malfunction in a spontaneous mechanical ventilation mode. In some embodiments, the system comprises a pressure generator, a subject interface, one or more sensors, one or more processors, electronic storage, a user interface, and/or other components. The detection of a gas delivery malfunction in a spontaneous mechanical ventilation mode is implemented by generating a test flow of gas for delivery to an airway of a subject, and monitoring a responsive flow of gas in the subject interface. If one or more parameters associated with the responsive flow of gas demonstrate inconsistencies with a reference flow of gas responsive to the test flow under a condition that there is no gas delivery malfunction, the system determines that there is a gas delivery malfunction.

Detecting a malfunction during spontaneous mechanical ventilation

A flow of breathable gas is delivered to a subject through a patient interface assembly. An enhanced technique for determining whether the airway of subject is disengaged from the patient interface assembly. A model that provides predicted values of a dynamic property of the flow of breathable gas is fit to measured values of the dynamic property. The model and/or the fit of the predicted values to the measured values are then analyzed to determine whether or not the airway of the subject is disengaged from the patient interface assembly. This provide enhanced determination of these conditions even in implementations in which a restrictive patient interface assembly is used.

A system and a method for expiratory flow limitation (EFL) detection by controlling positive pressure (e.g., PEEP) applied during expiration for a subject is based on a temporary perturbation or adjustment of a pressure level of positive pressure during exhalation on selected breaths. The different responses to such a perturbation of flow-limited breaths compared to non-flow limited breaths is used to assess EFL in a subject. Automatic adjustments of the positive pressure applied to the patient are used in the disclosed algorithm to abolish EFL, and are implemented through existing ventilators and other respiratory devices.

The present disclosure pertains to a system configured to detect slow waves in a subject during a sleep session. The system generates output signals conveying information related to brain activity of the subject. The system is configured to detect individual sleep stages of the subject, the individual sleep stages including a deep sleep stage; and, responsive to detecting the deep sleep stage, generate a harmonic representation of the output signals for a period of time during the sleep session that includes the deep sleep stage; identify two or more points of significance on the harmonic representation of the output signals; and analyze a shape of the harmonic representation of the output signals around the two or more points of significance to determine whether the shape of the harmonic representation of the output signals around the two or more points of significance corresponds to a shape of a slow wave.

System and method for detecting slow waves

The present disclosure pertains to a system for controlling a leak flow rate during respiratory therapy. The system is configured to determine a leak flow rate necessary for COexpulsion for an individual subject and facilitate control of the leak flow rate during therapy such that the system exhausts substantially the entire exhaled volume of gas during an expiration of the subject. The system facilitates control of the leak flow rate during therapy via an adjustable leak valve. Determining the leak flow rate for the subject and facilitating control of the leak rate may minimize noise from air flow in the system, minimize the power draw needed by a pressure generator of the system, reduce a loss of medicine added to the respiratory therapy gas, and/or have other advantages, while still expelling the desired amount of CO.
