A solar-nuclear hybrid plant includes a nuclear energy loop, a solar energy loop, and an electrical generation loop. The three loops are closed loops. The nuclear energy loop transfers energy to the electrical generation loop through a steam generator. The solar energy loop transfers energy to either the nuclear energy loop and/or the electrical generation loop through one or more heat exchangers in the appropriate loop. This cogeneration plant has higher efficiency compared to a nuclear power plant alone.

Solar-nuclear hybrid power plant

A new accumulator for generating mixing bubbles comprises pivoting, counterbalanced buckets, the buckets receiving air directed from blowers, either directly from injectors connected to the blowers, or from diffusers used for aeration of the liquid in the tank. A bucket, weighed down by a counterbalance, receives air from injectors or diffusers below, and, as the air displaces liquid in the bucket, the buoyancy of the bucket increases until it exceeds the downward force of the counterweight, at which time the bucket pivots upward to release a large mixing bubble into the tank. An assembly for installation of the accumulator affixes the accumulator on a rigid vertical piece depending from a horizontal bridge.

A portable device for measuring friction, especially friction between tire treads and road surfaces is disclosed. The portable friction tester is shaped as an equilateral triangle providing three points of contact for samples in the road surface.

Portable friction testing device

A method and algorithm for predicting the fluid loss rate of a system, uses data for the leak rate from the system for a substitute fluid that leaks at a different rate than the system fluid. In the illustrated embodiment, the system is a pneumatic tire and the substitute fluid is helium gas. The helium leak rate data is used in a Fortran program to predict the air loss rate from the tire by determining the leak rate factor f' for helium, as compared to air, and using 'f' to calculate the air loss rate.

Method and algorithm for predicting leak rates

A pendulum device is used to test the rolling resistance of a material. The device includes a rolling unit for contact with the material being tested, an assembly for initiating pendulum motion of the device, and measuring the amplitude of the pendulum motion over time. The rate of decrease of the amplitude of the pendulum motion is a measure of the rolling resistance of the material.

In determining the integrity of a fluid containing system, testing for integrity can be accelerated by injecting a first fluid into the system that is less viscous, or has a smaller molecular or atomic size or weight than a second fluid for which the system was designed, and measuring its rate of escape from the system. In an illustrated embodiment, helium is substituted for air in testing the leakage or diffusion rate of tires. As it escapes from the system, the first fluid is trapped in a container, which surrounds the system, and is detected using a sensor adapted for that purpose. The rate of leakage or diffusion of the first fluid is measured, and the rate data is used to estimate the rate of leakage or diffusion of the second fluid from the system.

Accelerated leakage testing

A method for detecting leakage of an expansion vessel,that, in an inflated form, occupies or has occupied at least a portion of a cavity,of an elastomeric article. The method includes the step of adding a tracer gas to a pressurized fluid. The method is characterized by the step of examining the atmosphere within the cavity of the elastomeric article, not within the expansion vessel, for evidence indicating that a portion of the tracer gas has escaped from the expansion vessel.

Method of detecting expansion vessel leakage

A temperature control unit provides means for observing samples under microscopy at greatly elevated and greatly reduced temperatures. The temperature control unit is constructed to insulate a sample from ambient temperatures while providing a highly heat conductive substrate for the sample that provides for rapid heat transfer to/from the sample. A dry gas provided a positive pressure around the sample, as compared to atmospheric pressure to help prevent atmospheric contract with the sample.

A universal mechanical seal gland formed of plastic has a central aperture positionable over a shaft extending from a housing for positioning a stationary seal against a rotary seal on the shaft. The central aperture is formed of a plurality of cylindrical and radial surfaces which define sealing surfaces permitting the gland to be used with a variety of differently sized and shaped seal members and housings and differently sized shafts.
