A process for the production of a polymeric film comprising a copolyester having an acid component and a diol component, said acid component comprising a dicarboxylic acid and a sulfomonomer containing a sulfonate group attached to the aromatic nucleus of an aromatic dicarboxylic acid, said process comprising the steps of: (i) melt-extruding a layer of said copolyester; (ii) stretching the extrudate in at least one direction; (iii) heat-setting the film by raising the temperature of the stretched film to a temperature Tin a first heating zone such that (T&#x2212;Tis in the range of from 5 to 30&#xb0; C., and then raising the temperature of the film to a temperature Tin a second heating zone such that (T&#x2212;Tis in the range of from 0 to 10&#xb0; C., wherein Tis the peak melting temperature of the polymeric film; wherein Tis greater than T; and wherein the times which a transverse section of the film spends in the first and second heating zones are defined by tand t, respectively, such that the ratio of tto tis at least 2:1; and a polymeric film obtainable thereby having an ultimate tensile strength at destruction in the range of 2 to 15 kgf/mmin the machine direction and 2.5 to 17 kgf/mmin the transverse direction.

A process for the production of a polymeric film comprising a copolyester having an acid component and a diol component, said acid component comprising a dicarboxylic acid and a sulfomonomer containing a sulfonate group attached to the aromatic nucleus of an aromatic dicarboxylic acid, said process comprising the steps of: (i) melt-extruding a layer of said copolyester; (ii) stretching the extrudate in at least one direction; (iii) heat-setting the film by raising the temperature of the stretched film to a temperature Tin a first heating zone such that (T-T) is in the range of from 5 to 30&#xb0; C., and then raising the temperature of the film to a temperature Tin a second heating zone such that (T-Tis in the range of from 0 to 10&#xb0; C., wherein Tis the peak melting temperature of the polymeric film; wherein Tis greater than T; and wherein the times which a transverse section of the film spends in the first and second heating zones are defined by tand t, respectively, such that the ratio of tto tis at least 2:1; and a polymeric film obtainable thereby having an ultimate tensile strength at destruction in the range of 2 to 15 kgf/mmin the machine direction and 2.5 to 17 kgf/mmin the transverse direction.

An anti-microbial polymeric film comprising a polymeric substrate layer and an inorganic anti-microbial compound of formula (I): AgHAM(PO).nHO wherein: A is at least one ion selected from an alkali or alkaline earth metal ion; M is a tetravalent metal ion; a is in the range 0.4 to 0.5; b and c are positive numbers such that (a+b+mc)=1; m is the valence of metal A; and 0&#x2266;n&#x2266;6, wherein the anti-microbial compound is present in the substrate layer in an amount of from about 0.05 to about 0.7% of by weight of the polymeric material of the substrate layer; and the use of said inorganic anti-microbial compound for providing an antimicrobial polymeric film having reduced haze.

A thermal transfer printing receiver sheet for use in association with a compatible donor sheet. The receiver sheet comprises a supporting substrate having a dye-receptive receiving layer to receive a dye thermally transferred from the donor sheet. The receiving layer comprises a polyester resin containing a hydrocarbyl group comprising a carbon chain containing greater than 7 carbon atoms.

A thermoplastic polymer composition comprising a thermotropic polymer and 0.025 to 5% by weight of the composition of a finely dispersed particulate inorganic additive wherein the additive is a material having at least 95% by weight of particles with at least one dimension less than 1 micron and preferably less than 0.1 micron and is an organophilic or organophobic material which has a settling volume of at least 10 when measured in a liquid in which the particulate material is compatible. The presence of the inorganic additive in the thermotropic polymer gives rise to an improved processing behavior.

A process of polymerizing a polymerizable material in an inert organic liquid medium, in which the polymer formed from the monomer or monomers is insoluble, comprising dispersing the polymerizable material in the organic liquid in the presence of a finely, divided particulate material comprising an inorganic portion insoluble in the organic liquid medium and in combination therewith, preferably by covalent or ionic bonding, hydrocarbon chains containing at least 8 carbon atoms, the hydrocarbon chains being soluble in the organic liquid medium and heating the mixture to polymerize the polymerizable material to a required degree of polymerization. The process provides a means of stabilizing dispersion polymerizations which need to be carried out at very high temperatures to effect the polymerization.

Melt processable, aromatic copolyesters containing 15 to 40 mole % of 4-oxybenzoyl moieties from 0.25 to less than 2.5 mole % of randomizing moieties, which are preferably 2-6 oxy naphthoyl moieties, the balance of moieties being equimolar proportions of moieties derived from hydroquinone and isophthalic acid. The preferred polymers are made by a dispersion polymerization process using as a dispersion aid a finely divided particulate material having at least 95% by weight of particles with at least one dimension less than 1 micron.
