An ambulatory metabolic monitoring system which includes a number of sensors which are adapted to be mounted on a subject for generating electric signals relating to various physical activities of the subject, and well as EKG signals, and signals indicative of the food and drink consumed by the subject, and which also includes a signal storage and processing unit which is carried by the subject and which is connected to the various sensors so that data related to the various physical activities and food and drink consumption of the subject may be stored and processed to provide information useful in monitoring the metabolic state of the subject.

Ambulatory metabolic monitor

A filter is provided for blocking a major portion of the light impinging thereon but transmitting three narrow spectral pass bands of light having selected wavelengths. The number of pass bands and the wavelengths included in each pass band are selected in accordance with environmental or military conditions dictating the wavelengths of light that need to be filtered. The transmitted narrow spectral pass bands preferably are spaced approximately equally about the CIE chromaticity diagram. The resulting filter enables exceptional seeing and color differentiation while positively blocking broad ranges of potentially injurious light from passing therethrough.

Optical filter

A flip-top replacement gas cap for replacing conventional screw-on caps provided as original equipment with present day motor vehicles. Two embodiments of the invention are disclosed. The first is a manually actuated device. The second is a key actuated device. In both embodiments pressure relief valves are included to vent over-pressure within the gas tank and to bleed off pressure prior to opening of the flip-top cap. The key actuated emboidment includes a rachet cam assembly which permits the cap to be screw fastened to a motor vehicle gas filler vent but precludes the unscrewing of the cap thereafter. 'Gas cap' is used herein as a generic descriptor for any closure cap used to seal a filler tube of a fuel tank or any other storage vessel.

A spring clamp with a lower clamping jaw, an upper clamping jaw, a first handle portion extending rearwardly from and integrally connected with the lower clamping jaw, a second handle portion extending rearwardly from the upper clamping jaw, the upper clamping jaw having a slide-housing integrally connected to the second handle portion, and an L-shaped bracket having a first leg portion having a free end for sliding cooperation with the slide-housing and a second leg portion extending at right angles to another end of the first leg portion. The slide-housing has a first cooperating means and the first leg portion has second cooperating means, the first and second cooperating means being operatively associated to allow for the sliding movement of the first leg portion with respect to the slide-housing and for preventing the escape of the first leg portion from sliding engagement with the slide-housing means. The L-shaped bracket may be oriented in two different states so that smaller and larger workpieces may be accomodated and clamped between the second leg portion and the lower clamping jaw. In the first state, the free end of the first leg portion faces away from the lower clamping jaw, while in the second state the free end faces toward the lower clamping jaw.

Filter system operates to provide reasonable seeability for human visual system while simultaneously limiting the total radiation energy impinging upon the eye. System comprises a transparent substrate which carries a plurality of thin layers having indices of refraction which alternately vary from a high index to a low index. Radiations passing the filter system are substantially confined to three bands centered at about 450 nm, 530 nm, and 610 nm with the width of the bands being from about 3 nm to about 50 nm as measured at one-half the maximum measured radiation transmission of each of the bands.

Colored object which is to be illuminated by many different types of sources of illumination and which exhibits an improved constancy of color appearance upon change of illuminants. The radiation-absorbing exterior portion of the object has color-absorbing components which combine to exhibit reflectance bands peaking at about 450 nm in the blue-violet, about 530 nm in the green and about 610 nm in the orange-red. The reflectance bands are substantially confined to a radiation range of 50 nm to 60 nm as measured at one-half of the maximum measured reflectance of the bands. This range can be expanded to 40 nm to 80 nm with some sacrifice in performance. The relative proportions of each of the color-absorbing components are preselected to produce a desired composite color for the exterior portion of the object. There is also provided a method for making the exterior portion of the object.

Method and apparatus for rapidly measuring any of a large number of characteristics of lamplight. Apparatus extracts from the illumination being measured seven narrow visible bands and one wider band of ultraviolet. The measured power in each of the visible bands is multiplied by a weighting coefficient and the combination of the products provides a number which is indicative of the lamplight characteristic being measured. The measured power in the ultraviolet band is separately weighted from the measurements in the visible bands.

Color-corrected HID mercury-vapor lamp provides good color rendition of illuminated objects and also has a commercially desirable emission color. The lamp incorporates the usual arc tube which emits both ultraviolet radiations and visible radiations and the color-correcting phosphor components are carried on the inner surface of an outer protective envelope and comprise three different phosphor components. A first of the phosphor components has an emission confined to the shorter wavelength region of the visible spectrum with a peak of emission at from 440 nm to 470 nm. A second of the phosphor components is confined to the middle wavelength region of the visible spectrum with a peak of emission at from 520 nm to 560 nm and the third of the phosphor components has an emission confined to the longer wavelength region of the spectrum with its peak of emission at from 605 nm to 630 nm. When the composite visible emissions from the arc tube and the phosphor components are combined, the emission color of the lamp at least approximates a cool-white color which is positioned at least proximate the black body line. Thus, the normal yellow-green emission of an uncorrected HPMV lamp is substantially color corrected in all respects.

High-intensity-discharge lamp of the mercury-metal halide type efficiently illuminates objects with excellent color appearance. The arc tube filling comprises the usual inert, ionizable starting gas and mercury in predetermined amount as required to provide a predetermined operating voltage drop between the lamp electrodes. The metal halide filling substantially comprises a predetermined limited amount of thallous iodide, a predetermined limited amount of stannous iodide and a predetermined limited amount of calcium iodide. The stannous iodide is used in such amount that it serves primarily to enhance the emission of the calcium iodiode and the amount of stannous iodide is sufficiently limited to curtail the generation of the characteristic continuous tin emission. The calcium iodide is present in greater gram amount than the tin iodide so that the effects of the calcium iodide emission are predominant. The resulting discharge has its emission concentrated in three selected wavelength portions of the visible spectrum, namely, blue violet which is due primarily to the calcium iodide emission, green which is due to the thallium iodide emission, and red which is due to the tin-iodide-enhanced calcium iodide emission. The efficiency of the composite discharge is good and the color appearance of illuminated objects is excellent.

High-intensity-discharge lamp is fabricated in a fashion generally similar to a standard high-pressure-mercury lamp which has a red-emitting phosphor coated on the outer envelope. In the present lamp, the discharge-sustaining filling in the arc tube is modified to include a small, predetermined proportion of cadmium which adds radiations of a wavelength of about 490 nm to the composite lamp emission. The resulting composite emission has greatly improved color-rendering properties as compared to a similar lamp which does not incorporate the cadmium addition to the arc tube filling.

There is extracted (i.e., detected) from the illumination to be measured, a blue-appearing narrow band, a green-appearing narrow band, a yellow-appearing narrow band and a red-orange-appearing narrow band. From these extracted bands are generated six different signals: a signal expressed as (aB) where (a) is about 0.23 and (B) is the watts of energy in the blue band, a signal expressed as (bG) where (b) is about 0.97 and (G) is the watts of energy in the green band, a signal expressed as (cR) where (c) is about 0.33 and (R) is the watts of energy in the red-orange band, a signal expressed as (dY) where (d) is about 0.19 and (Y) is the watts of energy in the yellow band, a signal expressed as (eG) where (e) is about 0.25 and (G) is the watts of energy in the green band, and a signal expressed as (fR) where (f) is about 0.25 and (R) is the watts of energy in the red-orange band. These signals are combined in the following manner: aB+bG+cR-dY+(the larger of eG and fR minus the smaller of eG and fR). These combined signals are expressed as a number which is indicative of the relative brightness of artificial illumination as perceived by the average observer.

High-pressure mercury-vapor lamp incorporates a special phosphor mixture on the interior surface of the outer envelope. The phosphor mixture comprises predetermined proportions and predetermined amounts of blue-violet-emitting phosphor, blue-green-emitting phosphor and red-emitting phosphor. When the composite emission of the phosphor mixture is combined with the visible light generated by the high-pressure mercury discharge, both the color rendering index and the light output of the lamp are substantially improved.

Method and device for efficiently generating white light with good color rendition of illuminated objects. This is achieved by blending three different colors of light, namely, a green to yellow-green color of light, an orange to red color of light, and a purplish-blue to greenish-blue color of light. The relative intensities of the blended colors of light are selected to produce white light of predetermined ICI coordinates. The resulting blended light has at most only a limited amount of radiations of a wavelength shorter than 430 nm and at most only a limited amount of radiations of a wavelength longer than 630 nm. Also, the blended light has at most only a limited amount of radiations of a wavelength of about 575 nm and at most only a limited amount of radiations of a wavelength of about 500 nm.

Method for efficiently generating white light with good color rendition

The light output of a high-presure discharge lamp that employs a mercury arc tube is selectively modified by two luminescent coatings on the inner surface of the outer protective envelope to provide color rendering and a source-color that are similar to those of an incandescent-type lamp. The coating in contact with the envelope surface comprises a blend of two selected phosphors -- one which absorbs and is excited by blue-violet radiations produced by the arc discharge and emits in the green portion of the spectrum, and another which also absorbs and is excited by the blue-violet radiations and by yellow radiations produced by the discharge and emits in the red portion of the spectrum. The second luminescent coating facing the arc tube comprises a phosphor that absorbs ultraviolet radiations produced by the mercury discharge and converts them into red radiations. The ultraviolet-converting phosphor coating is such that it transmits blue-violet and yellow radiations generated by the arc tube so that they can be absorbed and converted by the first phosphor coating. The desired color-rendering characteristics and reduction in the color temperature of the light emission are achieved with a minimum drop in light output and efficacy by using a mixture of green-emitting CaS:Ce phosphor and red-emitting CaS:Eu phosphor as the first-applied coating, and europium-activated yttrium vanadate phosphate phosphor as the second coating. Various other combinations of phosphors for the two luminescent coatings are also disclosed.
