An acoustic device including a motor disposed in a housing having a non-porous elastomeric membrane disposed across an acoustic path defined by a sound port of the housing is disclosed. The motor may be embodied as MEMS transducer configured to generate an electrical signal responsive to an acoustic signal, or as some other electromechanical device. The membrane has a compliance that is 1 to 100 times a compliance of the acoustic device without the membrane, wherein the membrane prevents ingress of contaminants (e.g., solids, liquids or light) via the sound port while permitting propagation of the acoustic signal along the acoustic path without significant loss.

At least one electrical value for a plurality of frequencies is measured over a range of frequencies. An impedance is calculated based upon the at least one electrical value for each of the plurality of frequencies in the frequency range, the calculating producing a plurality of impedances. A maximum impedance from the plurality of impedances and a frequency associated with the maximum impedance are determined. The frequency is compared to a predetermined threshold, and based upon the comparing it is determined whether an earphone has been removed from the ear of a wearer.

A gas adsorbing material is provided. Specifically, there is provided a molded matrix of a plurality of spherically-shaped gas adsorbing material. The individual spheres comprise particles of a highly porous gas adsorbing material and a binder. The plurality of spheres are mixed with a second binder material and molded into a desired shape for use in the back volume of an acoustic transducer such as a loudspeaker device, a microphone or a balanced armature receiver.

A valve for a personal auditory system is described. The auditory system is capable of converting between an acoustic signal and an electrical signal. The auditory system has an acoustic pathway through which an acoustic signal may travel between a first point exterior to the auditory system and a second point interior to the auditory system. The valve includes a free floating electrode and a second electrode adjacent to free floating electrode. An electric signal that is generated by the second electrode moves the free floating electrode to substantially open or close the acoustic pathway.
