A methodology is provided for processing carriers in a wireless application whereby the outputs of a multiplicity of modulated RF signal sources are combined into a single RF signal stream, that single RF signal stream being thereafter divided among the inputs of another multiplicity of RF power amplifiers. The outputs of that multiplicity of RF power amplifiers are then recombined, filtered and provided as an input to a transmission antenna.

Amplifier architecture for multi-carrier wide-band communications

A predistortion system uses a pilot signal to determine a predistortion function which is used to produce amplitude and/or phase adjustment(s) of an input signal on a signal path. Rather than simply detecting the input signal envelope before and after distortion generating circuitry, such as an amplifier, a pilot signal is provided on the signal path prior to the distortion generating circuitry. After the distortion generating circuitry, the pilot signal is detected. The predistortion system can determine the predistortion function by using the generated pilot signal and the detected pilot signal, for example, to provide improved characterization of the amplifier amplitude and/or phase response or to directly improve the determination of the predistortion function. In certain embodiments, the predistortion function is implemented using a look-up table to produce the amplitude and/or phase adjustment values, and the pilot signal is produced on the signal path by adding the pilot signal to the amplitude and/or phase adjustment values of the look-up table.

A method of and apparatus for monitoring the output signals of a power converter, having galvanic isolation between the input and output, observes the voltage and current on the primary side of the converter as reflected through a tertiary winding or influenced through the primary winding of the power transformer and applies error corrections thereto to replicate the output signal. These corrections are arrived at by compensating for operational differences between input and output circuitry and by emulating, on the primary side, the output side circuitry that causes the differences between the output signal and the reflected signal, and the conditions to which the output side circuitry is subjected. The resulting replicated signal is applied to feedback control circuitry, in lieu of the actual output signal, and used to regulate the output of the power converter.

A power inverter efficiency is optimized at high frequency in a fully resonant inverter operating with a range of load impedance that takes into consideration switching loss and conducting loss as a combined overall effect. Within this range of load impedance the inverter is constrained to operate with switching loss which is generally considered unacceptable in a conventional high frequency high efficiency power inverter, but the overall combined high efficiency of the disclosed power inverter has a wider range of load impedances than has been previously achieved in such a resonant power inverter. Non-linear capacitance across switching the device is positively utilized in achieving this goal.
