A muzzleloading rifle has a stock, a receiver, a forwardly extending barrel, a removable breech plug in the rearward end of the barrel and forwardly of the receiver, and a trigger mechanism. An elongated bolt member has a rearward end pivotally secured within the receiver and adapted to be pivoted from an aligned position within the receiver to an angular position outwardly through a slot in the side of the receiver. A transverse cross lug is mounted in a locking position within the receiver and has one end pivotally secured to the bolt so that when the bolt is pivoted outwardly from the receiver, the cross lug will be unlocked from the receiver to allow the bolt to be moved to a rearward position in the slot of the receiver. The bolt is operatively connected to an elongated striker pin in the bolt to pull the striker pin rearwardly against a compression spring when the bolt is moved forwardly to cock the striker pin. The trigger mechanism operatively releasably engages and holds the striker pin against forward movement when the bolt is moved forwardly and thence pivoted laterally to resume an aligned position within the receiver.

A breech plug having an elongated body with external threads that is threadably mounted adjacent to the rearward end of the bore of a barrel of a conventional muzzle-loading rifle. The body having both forward and rearward ends with a circular depression in the forward end and surrounded by an annular rim. The circular depression having a tapered bottom surface that slopes inwardly and rearwardly and terminates in the center portion in communication with a center bore that extends longitudinally along a center axis of the body. Within the circular depression are a pair of intersecting grooves that extend across the depression. The grooves have outer ends that extend from the outer edge of the rim inwardly and rearwardly across the tapered bottom surface to the center portion in communication with the center bore of the body to permit an ignition flame emerging from the center bore to move forwardly and outwardly through the grooves to the inner diameter of the bore of the barrel to ignite a propellant.

A muzzleloading rifle has a bolt with a laterally extending handle. The bolt is operationally connected to the cocking piece of the firearm by means of engaged cam surfaces of the bolt and the cocking piece which will permit the rifle to be cocked only by moving the bolt handle in an upwardly and rotational motion without any longitudinal movement of the bolt towards the cocking piece. After the firearm has been loaded by means of depositing a disc element with a primer element in the center bore thereof in the breech opening of the firearm, the firearm is placed in a firing condition by reversing rotational motion of the bolt handle. The disc element has a center bore which is adapted to receive a conventional nipple and a percussion cap, or in lieu thereof, and preferably, a shot gun primer. The latter is preferred in that it provides a hotter and more intense ignition of the gun powder in the muzzleloading rifle art. The hotter and speed of ignition of the shotgun primer improves the fire power, velocity, and accuracy of the muzzleloading rifle. A method of loading a muzzleloading rifle involves the steps of cocking the firearm and loading the firearm with the disc elements as described heretofore.

A forward sight for a rifle barrel has a sight element having a base portion for engagement with the forward end of the rifle barrel. An elongated fiber optic member is on the base member and has a rearward end exposed to view by sighting longitudinally towards the rearward end of the base portion. The fiber optic member is partially imbedded in the base member and extends through at least one raised portion on the raised member. The base portion is comprised of a transparent one-piece material extending substantially along the length of the fiber optic member to obtain substantial exposure of the fiber optic member to ambient light.

A muzzleloading rifle has a bolt with a laterally extending handle. The bolt is operationally connected to the cocking piece of the firearm by means of engaged cam surfaces of the bolt and the cocking piece which will permit the rifle to be cocked only by moving the bolt handle in an upwardly and rotational motion without any longitudinal movement of the bolt towards the cocking piece. After the firearm has been loaded by means of depositing a disc element with a primer element in the center bore thereof in the breech opening of the firearm, the firearm is placed in a firing condition by reversing rotational motion of the bolt handle. The disc element has a center bore which is adapted to receive a conventional nipple and a percussion cap, or in lieu thereof, and preferably, a shot gun primer. A method of loading a muzzleloading rifle involves the steps of cocking the firearm and loading the firearm with the disc elements as described heretofore.

An apparatus for applying scent to clothing has an enclosed compartment having a top, bottom and side walls. A horizontal perforated shelf extends across the compartment and divides the compartment into upper and lower portions. A closeable access opening is located in the side walls of the compartment for placing articles of clothing on top of the shelf. An air circulation conduit connects the upper and lower portions of the compartment. A fan is connected to the conduit for moving air therethrough from the upper portion to the lower portion of the compartment. A scent cartridge is in communication with the compartment in the path of air passing therethrough so the passing air will pick up the scent of the scent cartridge whereupon the scented air will move into the lower portion of the compartment, thence through the shelf and articles of clothing, and thence into the upper portion of the compartment and back into the conduit. The method of applying a scent to articles of clothing comprises placing a garment to be scented on a perforated shelf within a closed compartment, dividing the compartment into upper and lower portions, and then circulating scented air upwardly through the shelf and the garment. The scented air is then recirculated and exposed to a scented material, and the recirculation continues for a sufficient period of time that the appropriate level of scent has been imparted to the articles of clothing.

Method and means for applying scent to clothing

A rifle has a conventional gun stock, a receiver mounted thereon immediately rearwardly of an elongated barrel. The receiver has a forward end and a hollow forward end portion to detachably receive the rearward end of the barrel. The barrel has a rearward end portion that is tapered and which is complementary in shape to the tapered interior wall of the hollow forward end portion of the receiver. The receiver and the barrel have matching indicia marks to permit them to be properly aligned when assembled. The rearward end portion of the barrel has a pair of concave shaped wells which are substantially aligned, but partially offset, from threaded apertures in the receiver. Screws having rounded inner ends are mounted within the threaded apertures and penetrate into the wells and forcibly draw the barrel and the receiver into tight engagement with each other.

A breech plug and igniter system for a muzzle-loading rifle includes a generally cylindrical breech plug with a cylindrical chamber formed in the rearward end coaxial with the plug, and an ignition bore extending forwardly through the plug from the forward end of the chamber. A percussion capsule has a forward end removably mounted within the chamber and a rearward end projecting rearwardly from the rearward end of the breech plug. The percussion capsule has a metal percussion cup mounted in the rearward end of the capsule with the cup base flush with the base of the capsule. The percussion cup has an open forward end communicating with a bore in the capsule, which communicates with the ignition bore of the breech plug. The rearward end of the capsule has an annular lip projecting radially outwardly around the circumference thereof. A bolt has a slot formed in the side wall thereof spaced slightly rearwardly from the forward end of the bolt for receiving the rearward end of the percussion capsule. An opening in the forward wall of the slot has a width to receive the exterior diameter of the capsule, while the slot has a width to receive the annular lip, such that the bolt will removably receive the capsule rearward end within the slot to insert and remove the capsule from the breech plug chamber.

A cleaning jag assembly for use with the ramrod of a rifle comprises an elongated rod having threads at its inner and outer ends with the threads at the inner end being adapted for threadable engagement with an internally threaded bushing on the outer end of a ramrod. The outer end of the rod is threadably engaged with a cleaning jag. The rod has an unthreaded central portion except for a segment of threads that exist at the rearward end of the cleaning jag. Those threads are adaptable for engagement with the threads in the bushing when the rod is unthreaded from the bushing at its inner end, slidably moved through the bushing, and then threadably engaged by joining the threads of the segment with the threads at the outer end of the bushing.

A firing mechanism for a muzzleloading rifle has a stock, a rifle barrel, a breech plug in the rearward end of said breech plug, a receiver on the stock, a bolt and hammer assembly in the receiver rearwardly of the nipple, and a trigger assembly operatively secured to the bolt and hammer assembly. An adapter element is mounted on the rearward end of the nipple and has a rearward end with an opening therein for receiving and holding a cap rifle primer. The bolt and hammer assembly has a hammer with a forward end in axial alignment with the adapter element, the forward end of the hammer terminating in a forwardly extending conical shaped firing surface to engage a rifle primer mounted within the opening at the rearward end of the adapter element.

A breech plug for a muzzle-loading firearm is disclosed wherein the breech plug includes a soft metal insert to provide a soft metal-to-steel seal between the breech plug insert and the barrel of the firearm to prevent blow-by. The insert also provides for a soft metal-to-steel engagement between the forward end of the nipple and the breech plug insert to prevent blow-by when the powder charge on the nipple is ignited.
